Description

Cushions that dry before the next rain

The recurring outdoor-furniture complaint, across forum threads going back to 2021, compresses into one line: ten minutes of rain, then heavy waterlogged cushions that never dry and mildew by August. Nobody selling “waterproof cushions” fixed that — because a soaked cushion is a foam problem before it is a fabric problem. This page is the honest build for wet patios: covers that resist water, over foam that drains and dries instead of drinking.

What “waterproof” honestly means on a cushion

Three layers decide what happens to rain, and marketing flattens them into one word. The cover can be water-resistant — Solution-dyed acrylics and tech fabrics bead light rain, and coated canvases bead it harder, but seams and stitching always let some water through under real rain. The fill is where the damage happens: standard upholstery foam holds water like a sponge for days, while open-cell quick-dry foam drains and airs out in hours. The build — seam placement and a sewn closure — sets where water enters first.

Our wet-weather line pairs a water-resistant outer with a quick-dry core, cut to your measurements like everything we sew. Truly waterproof cushions exist — the welded vinyl pads you see at resorts and pool decks — and they earn it by being hot, sweaty and stiff to sit on. We do not build that; we build the version you actually want on a home patio: dry to the sit by afternoon, not welded shut like a pool toy.

The three layers, and what each one buys you

Layer What it does in rain Our honest spec
Cover fabric Beading and shedding; resists soaking and staining Water-resistant — tech fabrics and solution-dyed acrylics in the 119-fabric menu; no welded vinyl shells
Foam core Decides whether a soak lasts days or hours Quick-dry open-cell option on any outdoor piece — drains free, dries in hours stood on edge
Seams and closure Stitch lines are where water enters first Seams set to shed, zippered closure — covers remove for washing

The foam is the layer that ends cushion lives: a saturated standard core stays wet inside for days, and that is the mildew and smell people describe. The why and how of quick-dry foam is covered in our quick-dry foam outdoor guide, and if a set already went under, how to drain waterlogged cushions tells you when the foam can be saved and when it is done.

Measure before you order

Tape measure across a round tubular patio seat frame — measure the dry deck, never a soaked pad

Measure first: three minutes with our measuring guide — width, depth, and thickness at the seam, written down per cushion, not per set. Those three numbers are the entire spec: every waterproof outdoor cushions order we sew is cut to them and nothing else.

Wet-set caveat: never measure a rain-soaked cushion — waterlogged foam bulges and sagging covers misread by half an inch. Let the piece dry, then measure the deck and the old pad, and trust the deck where they disagree. After-storm habit: stand cushions on edge so the foam drains through the bottom seam.

Related builds: outdoor bench cushions take the same quick-dry build onto long pieces, round patio cushions and square outdoor cushions cover the two most common shapes, and the fade side of the same patios starts at Sunbrella-class replacements.

Fabric options & estimated pricing

Every fabric one price, on the same measured cut — so the choice below is about feel and weather, never about the bill. Solution-dyed acrylics for full sun, tech fabrics that shrug a shower, cotton linen for covered spots: all 119 live in the fabric menu inside the order flow.

*USD 45 make-base per piece + area at per-sq-ft rates (foam by density and thickness, fabric flat at $7.43 per sq ft — every one of the 119 fabrics the same rate). Estimates rounded to the dollar; the configurator figures your exact numbers live, and the quote is settled before anything is cut.

Estimates for the typical pieces above; your exact figure is set by your three numbers. Covers close with a zippered closure (covers remove for washing).

Frequently asked questions

Are fully waterproof cushions real?

Welded-vinyl pads are — resorts and pool decks use them — and the trade is comfort: they sit hot, they do not breathe, and they feel like pool furniture because they are. Home patio cushions marketed as waterproof are almost always water-resistant covers over ordinary foam, which is the worst of both builds. The honest wet-patio spec is a resistant cover over quick-dry foam.

What happens when these cushions get soaked?

The cover beads light rain and takes hours of heavy weather to wet through; when it does, the quick-dry core drains free rather than holding the water. Stand the piece on edge after a storm and it dries in hours, not the week a standard upholstery foam needs — which is exactly the failure mode that ends most outdoor sets.

Quick-dry foam or high-density foam — which do I need?

Fully exposed patios and pool-adjacent furniture: quick-dry. Covered porches and dry climates: standard high-density feels plusher for the same money. The HD vs dry-fast comparison charts the trade; both cut to the same measurements either way.

Can you build a waterproof bench cushion?

Yes — the bench is actually where the quick-dry build earns most, since long flat pads hold the most water and never see the sun to dry. A 48 × 16 bench pad in a water-resistant fabric over quick-dry foam is one of our most repeated wet-weather orders; see the outdoor bench page for bench-specific measuring.

How much do quick-dry outdoor cushions cost?

Custom pieces start at the USD 105 entry piece in the table above and scale with size and foam density — every fabric one price, final quote confirmed before anything is cut.

How long do they take to make and ship?

Every set is cut and sewn after you order — crafted in 4–7 business days, rush service 3–5 business days, then flat-rate shipping to your door; plan on 3–6 weeks door to door.
