Build Your 17 x 17 Cushion
Seventeen inches is the gap in every store’s size run — too odd for the even-number bins, too specific for generic cushion packs. Outdoor frames that take it are real: older bistro sets, compact balconies, children’s patio chairs, and imported lines cut to dimensions that never matched American retail. If your old pad measures between 16.5 and 17.75, no stock shelf has your number; custom cutting does.
Every 17 x 17 outdoor cushion is made to your measurements — the exact width, depth, and thickness you enter, sewn to the quarter inch. Keep thickness modest (2.5 to 3.5 inches) so a small frame keeps its designed seat height. All three fabric tiers available: Tech Fabric, our waterproof, wipe-clean leather-like weave for full exposure — the outdoor workhorse; Cotton Linen, a durable everyday weave for covered porches and indoors; and Premium Velvet, plush claw-resistant velvet for indoor luxury. Factory-direct, no minimums, one chair or a set of six.

Pricing — estimated starting at
| Fabric tier | Estimated price* |
|---|---|
| Cotton Linen | $78 |
| Tech Fabric | $91 |
| Premium Velvet | $108 |
*One cushion, 17 × 17 in. (2.01 sq ft top surface): $39 make-base + 2.01 sq ft × fabric rate ($19.0/sq ft, $25.5/sq ft, $34.0/sq ft). Thickness, foam density, and the sewn closure is confirmed at checkout — and every dimension is confirmed with you before we cut.
For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings for made-to-order cushions in common sizes (16×16 through 24×24) run roughly $71–$119 before shipping — and most only reveal that price after a quote request. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

Measure your 17 x 17 seat
- Old cushion flat on a table: width edge to edge, depth front to back, thickness seam to seam — never squeezed.
- Keep seat height in mind on small frames: every inch of thickness lifts the sitter. Match the old pad’s side.
- No old cushion? Measure the seat deck between rails and send the raw numbers — don’t round.

Fabric choices at 17 x 17
At 17 x 17 the fabric follows exposure. Open patio: Tech Fabric, waterproof and wipe-clean. Covered porch: Cotton Linen, the breathable natural weave. Screened or indoor: Premium Velvet, plush and claw-resistant. One fabric run per set keeps the dye lots agreed across every chair — the tier-by-tier comparison lives in the outdoor fabric guide.

17 x 17 on bistro and balcony frames
Thickness & Foam for a 17 x 17
Seventeen inches is the quiet standard between bistro squares and full dining pads — the seat size of countless imported dining sets that never published a chart. Thickness follows the table: 2.5–3 inches keeps dining height honest, with 3 the comfortable default and 2.5 the choice when knee-to-apron clearance is already tight. Match the original pad when you have it; the frame was designed around that number.
Density buys the years: 35D for seasonal sets, 50D for the daily table, and the 60–65D grades reserved for the lounging end of the library. Your grade, thickness and dimensions are confirmed together before cutting — the same written tolerance as every size we make.
The frames that take this square share a trait: they were built small on purpose. French-style bistro sets — the fold-up chairs and round tables of café sidewalks — run 15–17 inch decks. Balcony and small-patio sets from the import years run 16–18. Children’s patio chairs cluster here too, along with the stackable dining chairs that ship with compact sets. None of these frames ever had a deep aftermarket: too small for the mainstream bins, too various for a single stock size, and mostly sold as sets whose pads died with the warranty.
Small frames reward careful thickness more than big ones. A 17-inch deck sits at dining height by design, and every inch of pad is an inch of seat: two-and-a-half to three inches keeps bistro and balcony chairs at their built height; past three-and-a-half the sitter rises toward the table’s edge and the chair’s proportion breaks. Density does the comfort work that thickness cannot — 50D in a 2.5-inch pad outlasts and out-sits a 4-inch low-grade one.
Centimeters and inches
A share of 17-inch searches are really 43-centimeter searches — European and import frames cut to metric, typed into an American search box. The conversions this square cares about: 17 inches is 43.2 cm; 43 × 43 cm measures 16.9 inches square — the same pad; 44 cm is 17.3, still inside a quarter inch; 40 cm (15.7) and 45 cm (17.7) are different families. If your frame’s tag reads metric, convert with the tape measure rather than the formula: lay the old pad flat, read inches edge to edge, and order that. A metric-built frame measured in inches still cuts to the quarter inch — the form takes your number either way.

Frequently asked questions
Spot clean is the rule — every cover is sewn closed, so plan on wipes, not machine washing. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts.
