Why 18 x 18 is the most common small square

Eighteen-inch squares are the workhorse of outdoor dining — the default seat pad of patio dining chairs across two decades of sets. Thickness logic is table-height logic: 2.5–3 inches keeps the sitter at the height the table was built for, and the original pad’s thickness is worth matching when you have it.
