Build Your 21 x 21 Cushion

Twenty-one square is the size nobody stocks and plenty of frames want — it sits between the 20 dining standard and the 22 lounge module, which is exactly where a lot of mid-range patio furniture was cut. Our library documents factory pieces at this square and its nearest sizes across six series, including a chat-chair back and a dining seat: the table below tells you if your set is one of them.

We cut every 21 x 21 outdoor cushion to your measurements — width, depth, thickness — in three fabric tiers: Tech Fabric, our leather-like waterproof weave that wipes clean — the outdoor workhorse; Cotton Linen, a durable everyday weave for covered patios and indoors; or Premium Velvet, plush claw-resistant velvet for indoor luxury. Three-and-a-half to four inches suits seat duty; backs at this square typically run thinner. Covers close with a sewn envelope closure; fit does the holding — a pad cut to your numbers sits the frame without wandering.

Pricing — estimated starting at

Fabric tierEstimated price*
Cotton Linen$98
Tech Fabric$118
Premium Velvet$144

*One cushion, 21 × 21 in. (3.06 sq ft top surface): $39 make-base + 3.06 sq ft × fabric rate ($19.0/sq ft, $25.5/sq ft, $34.0/sq ft). Thickness, foam density, and the sewn closure is confirmed at checkout — and every dimension is confirmed with you before we cut.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings for made-to-order cushions in common sizes (16×16 through 24×24) run roughly $71–$119 before shipping — and most only reveal that price after a quote request. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

Measure your 21 x 21 seat

Premium Olefin - Deep brown
  • Old cushion flat on a table: width edge to edge, depth front to back, thickness seam to seam — never squeezed.
  • No old cushion? Measure the seat deck between the frame rails and arms, and send the raw numbers rather than rounding.
  • Photograph the label under the frame first — a model number can match you to a documented series chart in seconds.

Fabric choices at 21 x 21

Wicker and metal cafe frames at 21 inches spend their summers in full sun — Tech Fabric is the default for open sets, Cotton Linen for covered, Premium Velvet for indoor nooks. The tier logic and climate breakdown are in the outdoor fabric guide.

When 21 x 21 buyers shop — and why it matters

Thickness & Foam for a 21 x 21

Twenty-one inch squares sit between dining and lounge — wide dining chairs, compact loungers, wicker cafe sets. Thickness splits the same way: 3 inches for upright dining frames, 4–5 where the chair leans back. The recline angle matters more than people expect — a pad on a tilted deck slides forward, so an exact-fit cut matters as much as thickness — and a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller than the cushion, laid flat underneath, helps if the frame gets dragged around.

Density at this size: 35D for occasional sets, 50D for daily use, with the high grades better spent on true lounging furniture. Grade and dimensions are confirmed together in writing before cutting.

Searches for this square do not spread evenly across the year: they climb through spring, peak hard in May, and run two to four times their winter floor through summer. The furniture explains the shape — cushions discovered dead during the first warm-weather scrub-up, frames dragged out of the garage and found sun-bleached, guests scheduled and seats needed. The pattern repeats every year with the reliability of the weather that causes it.

What the season means for an order: production runs on queue depth, and May is the deepest queue of the year. An order placed in March cuts in days; the same order in mid-May waits behind everyone else’s scrub-up. If you are reading this in spring with summer plans, the honest advice is to measure now and order now — the seven-to-fourteen-business-day production clock starts when the order lands, and every week of May adds queue to the front of it.

Between 20 and 22

Twenty-one sits alone between two heavy sizes — 20 x 20 is the patio default and 22 x 22 the compact-lounge module — and frames split accordingly. Wicker dining chairs run 19–21 squares with 21 the top of the run; chat chairs and mid-range lounge modules take it as a true 21; the library holds a chat-chair back, a dining seat, and an ottoman at this square within a half inch. If your tape reads 20.5 or 21.5, order that — the rounding trap bites hardest on the odd squares, where a half inch one way lands you in a different family’s stock chart and a quarter inch the other is the difference between tailored and riding up at the corners.

Frequently asked questions

An inch of gap on a square pad shows — order what you measured. 21.25 costs the same as 21 here, and fits like it should.
A chat-chair back, a dining seat, and an ottoman top — see the table above with exact factory dimensions and series links.
3.5″–4″ for seat duty; 2.5″–3″ if it’s a back or ottoman pad. Match the old thickness to keep the geometry unchanged.
It is — wicker dining chairs commonly run 19–21 inch squares. If your frame is a named Home Depot line, the replacement library may hold its chart; the Cedar Island and Charlottetown pieces in our fits table below sit within a half inch of this square.
Yes — wicker decks taper wider at the front more often than any other frame type. Measure front and back widths separately; more than half an inch apart means a trapezoid cut, which is a standard option, not an upcharge.
Production runs seven to fourteen business days as the normal clock — but the queue in front of it swells every May. Order by early spring for a painless cut; a June order still ships, it just waits behind the season’s scrub-up rush. Measure in winter, while the frame is idle, and the spring order is three clicks.
