Description

Build Your Chair Back Cushion

A chair back cushion is a small piece doing structural work: it has to fill the gap the frame leaves behind your lower back, fasten to slats or rails that were never designed with cushions in mind, and survive being leaned on from an angle seats never experience. That is why generic pads fail on chair backs faster than anywhere else — too short for the frame, too thin for the lumbar gap, pads that land on solid wood with nowhere to sit.

We cut chair back cushions to your numbers — dining chairs and side chairs, rockers, high backs, wing backs, and the rounded backs that rectangle pads bunch on — with loft chosen for the lean and a fit cut to your measured slat frame. Order the back alone, or pair it with a seat pad in one run so the set matches in loft and dye lot.

*One chair back (18 × 20 × 3 in.): $45 make-base + 2.5 sq ft × rate ($27.37 per sq ft, 3" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). High backs and wing-back outline pieces price on their own area; seat-plus-back sets are the sum of their pieces.

Custom chair back cushions, made to your measurements — tailored scene

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings sell chair backs only inside full quote-only sets — a lone back replacement rarely gets a published number. The pricing math is right on the page — every dollar of the estimate traces back to a dimension you can measure.

Popular Chair Back Sizes We Cut

Piece Typical size Notes
Dining / side chair back 16–20 W × 16–20 H, 2–3" Sized to the slat frame — pairs with a dining seat pad
High back chair 18–24 W × 24–32 H, 3–5" Head-support height; see our high-back chair guide below
Wing back Outline piece with wings Wings wrap the sides — sketch the outline with dimensions labeled
Rocker / glider back 17–22 W × 16–25 H Motion-duty build — see rocking chair cushions
Rounded back Radius top or fully rounded A rectangle bunches — note the radius or send the outline
Outdoor chair back 16–22 W × 18–26 H, 3–5" Weatherproof build — start from outdoor cushions

Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers.

How to Measure a Chair Back Cushion

  • Measure the frame, not the old pad: width between the posts or rails at the widest point, height from the seat deck to the top edge of the backrest area you want covered — to the nearest quarter inch.
  • Measuring for custom chair back cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • Loft by duty: 2–3 inches fills the lumbar gap on upright dining chairs; 3–5 inches for high backs and anything you lean into for hours. Match the original unless the original was the problem.
  • Backs stay put three ways: a snug fit to the slot, the frame’s own wedge where the backrest meets the seat, and — for chairs that get dragged around — a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller, laid flat behind the pad.
  • Rounded or winged backs: sketch the outline on paper with the radius labeled — numbers alone lose the curve, the same rule as radius corners.
  • Full walkthrough with photos: our measuring guide.

Fabric for a Piece That Takes Angled Weight

A chair back leans differently than a seat sits — angled, repeated, and always against the same spot — so the cover shows wear at the shoulder seams first. Three fabric tiers cover most projects: breathable cotton linen for covered spots, tech fabric for weather, premium velvet for indoor polish. On fill, 2–3 inches of foam core holds a lumbar shape that fiber-only backs lose in a season of leaning; the density logic is unpacked in our filling types guide.

    The Chairs These Backs Fit

    • Dining and side chairs — 16–20 inch backs at 2–3 inches of loft that fill the lumbar gap; pair with dining seat pads in one run so the set matches.
    • High backs and wing chairs — 24–32 inches of head-support height, and wing backs go in as outline pieces: sketch the back with the wings, label the dimensions. See the high-back chair guide.
    • Rockers and gliders — motion-duty backs sized to the frame’s slot, built for the arc — rocking chair cushions.
    • Office and desk chairs — the lumbar insert the catalog chairs never included, cut to the backrest you actually sit against.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I order standard chair back cushion sizes?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: dining backs cluster at 16–20 inch widths and heights — type the standard numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote. Made to order means never out of stock, and the backrest area is still worth two minutes of measuring.

What size is a chair back cushion?

Dining and side chair backs run roughly 16–20 inches wide by 16–20 high at 2–3 inches of loft; high backs run 24–32 high. Frames vary more than the size words suggest — measure your own backrest area to the nearest quarter inch.

How do I keep a chair back cushion from sliding down?

Order to the frame, not the old pad: a back cut to the backrest’s full height and width gets wedged in place by the frame itself. Where the slot is loose — cushioned dining chairs, especially — a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller, laid flat behind the cushion, is the honest fix. We don’t sew on ties or gripper undersides — our factory can’t supply them reliably, so we won’t sell you the promise.

Can I get a back cushion for a high back or wing chair?

Yes — high backs run 24–32 inches tall at 3–5 of loft, and wing backs go in as outline pieces: sketch the back with the wings and label the dimensions, the same paper-template method used for curved and notched pieces.

Should I replace the seat and back together?

If more than one piece is worn, yes — one production run gives the set the same loft and the same dye lot, and a new back against an old seat shows at the seam line. The full reasoning is in our seat and back sets guide.

How long does a custom chair back cushion take?

Cut and sewn only after you order: production is 4–7 business days, rush production 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Delivery is 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

How do I clean and care for the fabric?

Wipes handle the daily work — and every cover unzips for machine washing when a full clean is due. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts. See all fabric options in the configurator, and zoom the weave shots before you commit.

What if my measurements turn out wrong?

Contact us with photos and the measurements you confirmed, so we can review the build against your numbers. If the mistake is ours — outside the ±½″ tolerance, wrong fabric, wrong build — the cushion is remade free, any time. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we’ll help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time.

Is a Chair Back Cushion Right for You?

    • High backs have a height entry fee. Wing chairs and tall slat backs run 24–32 inches at 3–5 inches of loft — a back cut short of the frame reads as a lumbar pad on a high-back chair, so give the full height, not the old cushion’s.
    • Nothing holds it up but the frame and friction. We do not sew ties or straps — a back cushion leans, it does not attach. Dining chairs with smooth rails may need a thin rug pad behind the pad; that is the honest fix, not a promise we cannot keep.
    • The cover unzips — wash it, or spot clean in place. The cover unzips — a full wash or spot cleaning in place, both in the care plan. A cut-to-size cover machine-washed harshly can shrink past its own tolerances, which is why these zippered builds spec a gentle cycle and air-dry.
    • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.

Made by the factory that ships them

    • Every dimension you send is re-checked before a single yard of fabric is cut.
    • Made-to-order means any fabric, any piece, no minimum.
