Description

Build Your Dog Bed Cushion

The pet aisle runs on a quiet subscription: a $25 fiber bed flattens in six months, gets replaced, flattens again — and the dog, who weighs more every year of puppyhood, sleeps on the same grade of fill as a guinea pig. A dog bed cushion is the same physics as any seat cushion: the dog’s weight sets the foam grade, the cover’s interior sets the size, and anything cut to both simply outlasts the pet-store cycle several times over.

This page is the factory answer for the whole pet-bed job: beds cut to any size with density graded by your dog’s weight, crate pads fitted to the crate you actually own, and replacement inserts for the good cover you already paid for — the orthopedic-grade covers that outlive three sets of cheap foam. Every build is the same answer: measure, weigh the dog honestly, get an instant factory-direct estimate.

Open the Customizer — Rectangle Preselected →

Enter width, length and thickness from the cover’s interior or the crate’s inside walls — then pick your fabric tier and density, and see an instant estimate with a dimension drawing.

Round beds, crate pads and bolster centers all start from the 11 shapes here.

Pricing — estimated starting at

Fabric tier Estimated price*
Cotton Linen $251
Tech Fabric $251
Premium Velvet $251

*One large-dog bed (36 × 28 × 4 in.): $45 make-base + 7.0 sq ft × rate ($29.47 per sq ft, 4" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). Smaller dogs cost less, giant breeds more — the breed table below is the honest multiplier. The same bed as a foam-only insert runs $81.

Custom dog bed cushions, made to your measurements — tailored scene

For comparison: the orthopedic pet beds at retail are, functionally, thick high-density slabs — the same foam logic this page cuts to your numbers, wrapped in a brand price. No hidden markups: each part of the estimate maps to a size you can verify with a tape measure.

Popular Dog Bed Sizes We Cut

Breed class Typical bed size Working build
Toy & small (< 25 lbs — Chihuahua, Yorkie, Shih Tzu) 24 × 18, 2–3" 35D; comfort layer optional
Medium (25–60 lbs — Beagle, Corgi, Border Collie) 30 × 20, 3–4" 50D — the daily-duty grade
Large (60–90 lbs — Labrador, Golden) 36 × 28, 4" 50–60D; thinner pads bottom through
Extra-large (90–110 lbs — German Shepherd) 42 × 30, 4–5" 60D
Giant (110+ lbs — Great Dane, Mastiff) 48 × 36, 4–5" 65D — the orthopedic build done properly

Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers.

How to Measure a Dog Bed Cushion

  • Measure the cover’s interior, not the old fill — seam to seam with the closure open — and note the gusset (the boxed side wall) that sets the insert’s thickness.
  • Measuring for custom dog bed cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • Deduct a nominal quarter inch per side so the insert sits in the cover without fighting it — thinner swims, thicker strains the closure. Type the finished size — if you measured the cover interior, make that deduction yourself; we don’t deduct it twice.
  • For new beds without a cover, give the dog the curl-room test: bed length at least the dog’s nose-to-tail-base length, plus the thickness from the breed table above.
  • For crates, measure the crate’s inside walls and pan height — the crate section below — not the size on the box.
  • Full walkthrough with photos: our measuring guide.

    Fabric That Survives Dogs

Dogs are the hardest fabric test in any house: claws at kneading time, digging at bedtime, accidents at worst. The working tiers are the ones that take it — dense chenilles (the claw-resistant weave the furniture world calls cat-resistant for a reason), canvas-grade wovens, and wipe-clean tech fabric over a foam core that surface-cleans. The claw-resistance hierarchy and the washability trade-offs are compared honestly in our dog-friendly fabric guide.

Seven of the our fabrics in the swatch library — see every option in the configurator before you order.

Custom dog bed cushions construction close-up — foam core, fabric and stitching detail

Two add-ons worth naming for dog duty. Waterproof: the same tech-fabric tier can be built as a wipe-clean, moisture-blocking pad — the honest version of the “waterproof dog bed” search, which in retail means a sealed pod you throw away when the zipper fails; here it means a pad you wipe down and re-cover for years. Outdoor lines: Sunbrella and the other outdoor-grade weaves make a porch or mudroom dog cushion that takes rain, UV, and the toweling-off after a wet walk — the same fabrics our outdoor patio cushions are sewn from, sized down to dog scale.

Pillow Dog Beds: The Flat Style, Cut Right

The pillow dog bed — the flat, borderless slab a sprawler sleeps on — is the simplest thing a cushion factory makes, and the hardest thing to buy well. Retail pillow beds are sold by label size, filled to a price point; a 36-inch pillow bed that measures 33 inches inside arrives pre-flattened. Ours is the same build as every cushion on this page: your cover’s interior or your dog’s sprawl zone, foam graded by weight from the breed table above, any fabric in the swatch library. A Great Dane-grade 48 × 36 pillow in 65D is the orthopedic slab the pet aisle charges a brand price for; a window-perch pillow for the small dog who ignores the expensive bed is a two-minute order. Dogs who circle and dig themselves a nest before lying down tend to stay on a flat pillow; dogs who lean against walls want the Crate & Insert builds below.

Crates, Inserts, and the Other Pets

The wire crate should make this easy and doesn’t. Crate makers size by dog weight, not by inside dimensions, and no two lines agree: the “36-inch” crates from different makers vary in inside length and in door geometry, and the raised pan lip eats height that a thick pad steals twice. The pad that fits one 36-inch crate gaps or jams in another — which is why crate pads are a measuring job, not a size-chart job.

    • Measure the inside walls — length and width floor to floor, past the pan lip — and the door’s swing height; thickness has to clear both.
    • 2–3 inches is the crate budget — enough loft for joints, thin enough that the door latches and the pan still slides out for cleaning.
    • The plastic pan slides — the pad shouldn’t. A pad cut exactly to the pan’s inside dimensions fills it corner to corner and has nowhere to bunch into, however many times the dog circles before settling.
    • Crate-trained puppies get the cheap fill — the honest lifecycle note: puppies chew, and a replaceable insert beats an expensive bed during the phase.

The quality pet-bed market converged on a structure that makes insert replacement obvious: a durable outer cover, a hook-and-loop or snap opening, and a foam slab inside. The price sits in the cover — the expensive orthopedic beds are expensive because of fabric and construction, not the foam. When the bed goes flat, replacing the insert at foam rates restores it entirely; throwing the bed away is throwing away 70% of what you paid for.

The order is the simplest in the custom world — cover interior dimensions, density from the weight table, done. The same 36 × 28 × 4 bed that runs $251 sewn runs $81 as a foam-only core. The insert logic — measuring covers, grading by weight, washing — is laid out in full in our dog bed cushion foam guide.

Cat beds are the same job at smaller sizes — and a harder fabric test. A 12-pound cat’s claws do more surface damage than a 70-pound dog’s paws, which is why the cat-proof tiers are the dense weaves: chenille, canvas, and the tightest knits. Window perches and cat beds run 15–24 inches in the same shapes and the same calculator; rabbit and other small-pet pads run smaller still, in the wipe-clean tiers. The one honest species difference: cats knead as well as dig, so seam style matters — boxed seams with the stitching carried inside the seam allowance last longest under claws.

    Frequently asked questions

Do you sell standard dog bed cushion sizes?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: pet beds cluster near a handful of sizes (24 × 18, 30 × 20, 36 × 28), but no two brands agree on them. Type your measurements into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote — nothing is warehoused, so no size is ever out of stock.

What foam density does my dog need?

By weight: 35D under 25 lbs, 50D for 25–60 lbs, 60D–65D for large and giant breeds — and 4 inches or more of it for the big dogs, who bottom through thin pads regardless of grade. For the grade-by-grade breakdown, see how to choose foam density.

How thick should a crate cushion be?

Match the crate’s door and pan: most wire crates take 2–3 inches without blocking the door swing or the pan slide. The crate’s own interior-height budget, not comfort, is the limit — measure the opening before ordering thickness.

Is chew-proof dog bed foam real?

No foam is chew-proof — the honest answer. Maximum-density grades resist tearing better than soft foams, tough covers last longest, and puppies get cheap fills until the chewing phase passes.

Can you make a cushion for a cat bed?

Yes — cat beds and window perches are the same job at smaller sizes, and cats sharpen the fabric requirement: the chenille and canvas grades that survive claws are the working tiers.

How do I clean a custom dog bed cushion?

Wipes handle the daily work — and covers unzip for machine washing when a full clean is due. Tech Fabric is the easy one with a dog in the house: a waterproof surface that wipes clean of accidents with a damp cloth. Chenille spot-cleans; brush the pile flat to dry. The foam core surface-cleans too — damp cloth, mild soap, air dry.

How long does a custom dog bed cushion take?

Your order starts the clock at the cutting table: production runs 4–7 business days, with rush production at 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Delivery is 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

What if my measurements turn out wrong?

Contact us with photos and the measurements you confirmed, so we can review the build against your numbers. If the mistake is ours — outside the ±½″ tolerance, wrong fabric, wrong build — the cushion is remade free, any time. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we’ll help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time.

What’s the difference between a dog bed cushion and a dog bed?

The bed is the whole product — frame, bolsters, cover, fill, sold as one SKU. The cushion is the part that does the supporting. We make the cushion side: a foam insert cut to your numbers, in a sewn cover, sized to drop into the dog bed or crate cover you already own, or to lie flat on its own as a pillow-style bed. If your cover is still good and the fill has pancaked, replacing the cushion is the entire job — buying another bed means paying again for the part you already have.

Can you embroider my dog’s name on the cushion?

No — we don’t do embroidery or monogramming, and we’d rather say so than take the order. Our customization is dimensional: size, shape, foam density, and fabric are all yours to set; a name is not among them. If a personalized dog bed with the name stitched in matters, the practical split is a retail embroidered cover over one of our replacement inserts — the name outlives the foam either way.

Is a Dog Bed Cushion Right for You?

    • Chew-proof foam does not exist. Maximum-density grades resist tearing better and tough covers last longest, but a determined dog gets through anything — puppies in the chewing phase belong on a cheap replaceable insert, not an expensive bed.
    • The crate opening, not comfort, sets thickness. Measure the interior height of the crate or cover before picking loft — a pad the door cannot close over is returned to the scissors, and no density grade fixes a lid that will not shut.
    • Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and den light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
    • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.
