POÄNG Armchair Replacement Cushions for IKEA — Measured Fit (2026)

Yes, IKEA still sells original POÄNG cushions — around USD 20–40 depending on piece. This page is the other question: when the frame is permanent and you want fabric and foam that outlast the original, measured to the same specs, from USD 45.

The POÄNG line at a glance

POÄNG is the rare IKEA line whose cushions sell separately from the frame – which makes it both the best case in flat-pack (factory spares, new colors, cheap) and, when the pattern or your frame generation rotates out, the clearest argument for a measured replacement. The cushion is the entire seating system: two bent birch rails and a fabric sling, with the pad providing every bit of the comfort.

POÄNG is also the rare line where IKEA publishes actual cushion thickness (2 inches on the chair cushion), not just seat height. Every number below is from official product measurements.

Every field takes quarter-inch decimals and the estimate recalculates as you type. What leaves the bench for this series in a typical week: a chair seat and back cut as a matched pair, ottoman tops, kids-armchair pads, and copies of retired colorways — thickness matched to the 2-inch factory chair spec, or built up for more loft. One per-square-foot formula covers every piece; no shape carries a surcharge.

Series mismatch, or a piece with no chart entry? Start from any shape → — we cut to what you measure.

Two inches, one and five-eighths, one: thickness is the product

POÄNG is the rare line where IKEA publishes the one number most makers hide, cushion thickness, and the three official values tell the whole story. The chair cushion is 22 1/2 wide at a full 2 inches of loft. The ottoman cushion is 21 5/8 by 23 1/4 but only 1 5/8 thick. The children’s armchair cushion is 16 wide at a single inch. On a bent-rail sling frame there is no seat structure underneath, no springs, no deck, so those thickness numbers are not comfort specs, they are the entire load path between you and the birch.

The same logic explains a small mystery in the seat-deck numbers: the armchair deck sits at 16 1/2 while the rocking chair deck sits at 17 3/4, a 1 1/4-inch difference on otherwise identical 22 x 19 5/8 seats. The rocker’s arc wants the occupant higher at rest; the static chair does not. When your frame’s generation has drifted from the current spare, that height gap is usually the tell, and it is also the opportunity: a measured pad cut half an inch thicker than catalog restores a rocker that has sagged below its swing geometry.

Thin foam punishes vague specs. In a 2-inch pad, every grade change is perceptible to the sitter, the same foam reads noticeably firmer thin than it does in a 5-inch sofa block, so when replacing a POÄNG cushion it is worth deciding deliberately between matching the factory 2-inch feel and adding a little. One constraint stays fixed: the rails curve, and the pad rides that curve in a fabric sling, so extra thickness changes where you sit on the arc and can push your head past the headrest bend. Half an inch is a comfort upgrade; a full extra inch starts moving you up the rails.

Armchair seat rebuild (22 x 19 5/8)$134$137$146
Ottoman seat (21 1/4 x 21 1/4)$138$142$151

These figures are estimates: the $45 make-base plus area at per-sq-ft rates, each piece built to order. A final quote reaches you for sign-off before the knife touches foam, and every cover goes out zippered, ready to remove and wash.

For scale: a POÄNG-size pad lands in roughly 16×16-to-24×24 territory, and U.S. custom-configurator shops list such pieces at $71–$119 in 2026, before freight — frequently behind a quote request. Here the arithmetic sits in the open: each dollar of the estimate maps to a number off your own tape measure.

Compiled from official IKEA material: live product pages, archived figures, and surviving aftermarket spec sheets. Everything reads in inches, and the odd-looking fractions (21 5/8, 23 1/4) come straight from metric originals — order the exact fraction, never the rounded inch.

Tape measure first — always

Measuring for custom chair cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut

The POÄNG pad spans the sling between the bent rails, so that span is the number: measure edge to edge, quarter-inch precise, exactly as the three-step method walks through it. IKEA figures arrive from metric originals, which is why the chart carries fractions like 21 5/8 and 19 5/8 — never round to a whole inch. We check what you send against the chart above before the first cut.

Fabric options

Three fabric families cover most projects — all fabrics, one price: breathable cotton linen for covered spots, tech fabric for weather, premium velvet for indoor polish. Indoor work gets 45–60D HR cores, with thickness picked to restore the seat height in the official specs.

Is your set really POÄNG?

POÄNG is unmistakable – bent laminated birch frame, few parts, sold for decades. The generation check matters though: colorways and cushion versions rotate, and the current spare can drift from older frames’ dimensions. Compare your frame’s seat span against the chart; disagreement means your generation has moved on, and the route is a custom copy cut to your numbers. The whole identification walk-through lives in the three-step measuring guide.

Original IKEA pad or custom upgrade: the honest comparison

If your POÄNG cushion wore out evenly and you want the chair exactly as it was, buy the original — IKEA stocks chair, ottoman, and children’s pads in the current fabric range, and the fit is guaranteed. Order the custom when one of three things is true. One: fabric — the original comes in a handful of colors; the bench here offers 119 including velvet and linen weaves IKEA has never run on this frame. Two: foam life — the stock pad is polyester wadding over light foam; a 45–60D HR core holds its height for years of daily sitting, and an extra inch of thickness restores the seat height a twenty-year-old frame has lost. Three: the frame isn’t a POÄNG at all — plenty of bent-wood rocking chairs and clones take the same pad shape, and IKEA’s catalog won’t cut to yours. We do.

Frequently asked questions

Yes – POÄNG sells its cushion as an accessory, so a factory spare in current colors is the first route. It fails when your frame generation no longer matches current cushion dimensions or when you outgrow the catalog’s fill and fabric – then a custom cushion cut to your frame’s span is the working route.

Officially 2 inches – POÄNG is one of the few IKEA lines where cushion thickness is published, because the cushion is a separate article. The ottoman cushion runs 1 5/8 inches and the children’s cushion 1 inch.

No – the POÄNG cushion is a frame-specific shape spanning the arms and wrapping the seat angle. It exists only as the factory spare or a custom copy cut to your frame’s measurements.

A 45-60D high-resilience core – the cushion is the entire seating system, so density is lifespan. A custom core holds its loft years past catalog fill on daily-reading chairs.

Cut and sewn only after you order — a 4-7 business-day make-and-ship window: production runs 4–7 business days, with 3–5 day rush available for most fabrics, then shipped direct from our workshop.

The zipper opens for a full wash; between washes, spot care is the regimen. On a reading chair that sees daily coffee, Tech Fabric earns its keep: spills bead on the waterproof face and wipe away. Cotton Linen responds to spot treatment, and a low-heat pass with the iron on the reverse side lifts creases. Velvet tolerates dry cleaning or a careful hand wash, with the pile brushed flat as it dries; Chenille is spot-clean only — keep any brushing away from the tufts. All 119 options display enlarged in the configurator.
