What wicker cushions are — and which type you need

Wicker is the weave, not the material — rattan, cane, resin and HDPE all get woven into it (wicker vs rattan vs cane). The cushion trade splits the same way the frames do. On one side: loose fiber-fill pads, cheap and soft, that flatten within a season or two of real sitting. On the other: cut foam — a solid high-density core wrapped in a sewn cover, which keeps its height for years and is what nearly every premium replacement maker uses. We only build the foam type, cut to your numbers rather than stocked sizes.
Three builds cover most wicker chairs: a seat-only pad for dining and porch chairs with a woven back, a seat-and-back set for deep seats and parlor pieces, and shaped single pieces — rounded, U-shaped pans on rockers, angled fronts on vintage sets. Every one is cut from your measurements, including the curves: a paper tracing of the outline, photographed next to a tape measure, is all a curved pan needs.
Replacement wicker cushions — two honest routes
Most wicker searches are replacement searches: the frame is fine, the pads are flat, faded or gone. There are two routes, and the right one depends on what you know about the set.
Route 1 — a named set. If your furniture carries a brand, our replacement cushions hub holds 43 measured brand series with factory size charts — Hampton Bay, Martha Stewart, IKEA and more. You look up the series, the original numbers are already there, and nothing gets measured twice.
Route 2 — any frame, tape measure route. Unbranded, vintage, or already re-covered once? Measure the old cushion cover seam to seam, cover flat and closed — not the foam inside, which compresses and shrinks and lies about the size. Record width, depth and thickness for every piece separately (seat and back on the same chair are rarely identical), send us those numbers in the custom wicker cushion configurator, and the new set is cut to the cover that used to fit. That is the whole method behind every replacement order we ship — and if the cut misses your numbers by more than ±½″, we remake it free.

Measure once: width, depth, thickness — and the curve

Three numbers drive every order. Seat width: measure the front edge side to side, then again at the back before the sides curve in — if they differ, you have a tapered seat and both numbers matter. Seat depth: front edge back to the lower backrest or the weave stops. Thickness: how much height you want back — flattened pads were once thicker than they look. Back cushions take a fourth number, height, minus about 3″ so the back does not stack onto the seat. For U-shaped and rounded pans, the full method is in how to measure curved wicker seating.
Standard wicker seat sizes — a starting point, not a limit
Google’s own shopping filters split wicker chairs by seat width — under 18″, 18–19″, 19–20″, over 20″ — because that is how ready-made pads are stocked. The bands tell you what your chair likely is:
| Seat width | What it usually fits | Typical build |
|---|---|---|
| Under 18″ | Narrow parlor, rocking and antique wicker | U-shaped pan, 2–3″ foam |
| 18–19″ | Standard dining and porch chairs | Square or rounded, 2–3″ |
| 19–20″ | Standard patio chairs, most resin sets | Square, 3–4″ |
| Over 20″ | Deep seats, wide armchairs, loveseats | Square or T-shape, 4–5″ |
Thickness runs 2″ for a slim refresh up to 5″ for deep seats that need their height back. The bands are diagnostics, never walls: every dimension on this page is cut to the eighth of an inch. Two-seat frames are covered in wicker loveseat cushions; indoor weave in how to tell indoor from outdoor wicker.
Fabric and foam for cushions that live in the sun
Open patios call for waterproof Tech Fabric — wipe-clean, rain-tolerant, fade-resistant; covered porches and sunrooms can take Cotton Linen or Velvet and feel softer. All 119 fabrics price the same, so the choice is touch and look, never a surcharge. On the performance question: solution-dyed acrylics like Sunbrella set the benchmark for full-sun exposure, and we stock that line too — the honest comparison is in custom Sunbrella cushions.
Foam density does the sitting work: 60D for daily seat cushions, 50D for firm backs, 35D when you want soft and cozy. The reasoning is in how to choose foam density. Weather logic for the frame itself is separate — is wicker furniture waterproof? covers what rain does to each weave family.

Transparent pricing — the formula is the price

Every quote comes from one published formula: $45 make-base per piece, plus seat area × your foam-density rate, plus area × a flat $7.43 fabric rate — 119 fabrics, one price. No shape surcharge, no brand premium, no quote-by-email. Sample builds, exact math shown:
| Build | Formula | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 16×16×2″ 35D seat | 45 + 1.78 sqft × 17.13 + 1.78 × 7.43 | $89 |
| 17×16×3″ 50D seat | 45 + 1.89 × 19.94 + 1.89 × 7.43 | $97 |
| 17×17×3″ 50D back | 45 + 2.01 × 19.94 + 2.01 × 7.43 | $100 |
| 18×18×3″ 50D seat | 45 + 2.25 × 19.94 + 2.25 × 7.43 | $107 |
| 20×20×4″ 50D deep seat | 45 + 2.78 × 22.04 + 2.78 × 7.43 | $127 |
| Seat + back set (17×16 + 17×17, 3″ 50D) | 97 + 100 | $197 |
That set price lands mid-band in a market where ready-made wicker pairs run $26–$359 and named-brand replacements climb past $400 — except these are cut to your frame. Shipping is free over $158 ($29 flat below), and a seat-only wicker pad starts the same formula lower.
How ordering works
Step 1 — measure the cover or the frame pan: three numbers, four for back pieces, a tracing for curves. Step 2 — pick fabric and density in the configurator; the price updates live with every field. Step 3 — order: production runs made and shipped in 4–7 business days (3–5 day rush available), direct from the workshop that cut it. Free remake outside ±½″, every order, no upholstery queue, no six-week wait.
Frequently asked questions
Ready-made pads run $26–$359 a pair at retail, and named-brand custom replacements commonly run $130–$400. Ours are cut to order from $89 (16×16×2″ seat) with the full formula published above — a seat-and-back set lands around $197 in mid-density foam, any fabric at the same price.
Seat widths cluster under 18″, 18–19″, 19–20″ and over 20″ — the same bands Google’s shopping filters use — with thicknesses from 2″ to 5″. Standard sizes are a starting point here, not the catalog: every piece is cut to your measurements.
Solution-dyed acrylic is the right call for full-sun, uncovered exposure — it holds color and shrugs moisture better than spun polyester, which fades faster in continuous direct sun. If your wicker sits in shade or under cover, the standard outdoor fabrics perform fine for less. We stock both at one flat fabric rate.
The weave itself does most of the work: woven seats have natural give, and a firm foam cushion settles into it and stays put under body weight — unlike slick metal or plastic frames. Deep seats and smooth resin weave can add friction with a rougher fabric face, which is free here since fabrics price the same.
Yes — natural texture has been climbing in patio and sunroom design for years, and woven frames pair with every cushion color you can spec. The frames last decades; the cushions are the part worth replacing, which is exactly what this page is for.
Made and shipped in 4–7 business days, with a 3–5 day rush when the season is closing in. Named-brand replacement series from the hub ship on the same clock — and if the cut misses your measurements by more than ±½″, the remake is free.
