Build Your 22 x 22 Cushion

The 22-inch square is the quiet standard of mid-size outdoor seating — conversation-set seats, compact deep-seating chairs, and plenty of wicker frames built in the 2010s. Twenty-two is also where factory numbers stop agreeing: our library shows originals ranging from 22 to 22.75 inches on nominal “22 inch” pieces, and three-quarters of an inch of error is the difference between a pad that sits tailored and one that rides up at the corners every time someone stands.

Every 22 x 22 outdoor cushion we make is cut to your tape measure, not a stock chart. Choose 3.5 to 5 inches of thickness to match your seat height and pick from three fabric tiers led by Tech Fabric, our waterproof, wipe-clean leather-like outdoor workhorse. Documented near-matches include the Cedar Island recliner seat (22.75 x 21.5) and the Kampar dining chair’s integrated 22 x 22 pad — check the series charts linked below before you order.

Pricing — estimated starting at

Fabric tierEstimated price*
Cotton Linen$103
Tech Fabric$125
Premium Velvet$154

*One cushion, 22 × 22 in. (3.36 sq ft top surface): $39 make-base + 3.36 sq ft × fabric rate ($19.0/sq ft, $25.5/sq ft, $34.0/sq ft). Thickness, foam density, and the sewn closure is confirmed at checkout — and every dimension is confirmed with you before we cut.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings for made-to-order cushions in common sizes (16×16 through 24×24) run roughly $71–$119 before shipping — and most only reveal that price after a quote request. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

Measuring tips for a 22 x 22

Premium Olefin - Orange
  • Old cushion flat on a table: width edge to edge, depth front to back, thickness seam to seam — never squeezed.
  • On wicker frames, measure the old pad at the stitching, not the wicker edge — weave bulge adds false width.
  • Write fractions as decimals: 22¾ becomes 22.75. We cut to the quarter inch.

Fabrics that suit a 22 x 22

The tier logic is exposure: Tech Fabric open-air, Cotton Linen covered, Premium Velvet indoor. Loveseat blocks order in pairs from one run — adjacent pads must match in loft and dye lot. Full comparison in the outdoor fabric guide.

Striped Canvas - Light brown

22 x 22 on sectionals and corner blocks

Foam thickness for a 22 x 22

Twenty-two inch squares bridge dining and lounge — wide dining chairs, compact wicker loungers, loveseat seat blocks. Thickness: 3 inches upright, 4–5 lounging. Two-block loveseats run this square per seat; joined decks run one wide pad instead — replace like with like.

Density: 35D occasional, 50D daily, 60D nap-grade lounge. Grade, thickness and dimensions confirmed together in writing.

Sectionals are the pieces most often mis-ordered as “a few square cushions,” and 22-inch squares are common inside them. The build to understand: a sectional is not chairs — it is seat blocks, a corner wedge, maybe a chaise end, and a run of backs, each a separate cut with its own depth. Seat blocks at 22 run front-to-back depths of 22–24 on compact sectionals; the corner wedge runs roughly 27 × 27 with a diagonal front and two distinct depths where the arms meet; the chaise end is one long rectangle or an L cut as a single piece.

The ordering rule that saves remakes: count and name every block before measuring any of them. A seven-piece sectional is four seats, one wedge, two backs — or it is three seats and an L — and the piece list, not the seat count, is what the cutting form needs. Backs run the seat width at 4–7 inches of loft and often a wedge profile; they belong in the same fabric run as the seats. The block-by-block method, with the corner and chaise geometry, is laid out on the sectional cushions page.

The 22-inch neighborhood

Twenty-one and twenty-three are both live sizes, and the library’s originals at “22” actually run 22 to 22.75 — the Cedar Island recliner seat at 22.75 × 21.5 sits inside the tolerance, but ordering its true numbers is the better cut. Wicker dining squares run 19–21, one inch down; compact lounge modules run 20–23 per seat, with 22 the midpoint. If your tape says 21.5 or 22.5, that is the order — the family pages (21 x 21, 22 x 24) exist for the near sizes, and every one cuts to quarter-inch entries at the same formula.

Frequently asked questions

The Cedar Island recliner seat is 22.75 x 21.5 inches — inside our ¾″ tolerance, but the better move is to order those exact numbers. Enter what you measured and we sew to it.
Three tiers, at every size: Tech Fabric, our waterproof, wipe-clean leather-like weave — the outdoor workhorse; Cotton Linen, a durable everyday weave with no pilling, shrinking, or fading, best under covered patios and indoors; and Premium Velvet, plush high-density velvet with a claw-resistant weave for indoor luxury. A 16-inch square gets the same fabrics as a 60-inch bench pad.

Spot clean is the rule — every cover is sewn closed, so plan on wipes, not machine washing. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts. Free fabric samples ship with every quote, so you can judge the weave by hand before you commit.

Both use it: compact lounge chairs and two-block loveseats run 20–23 inch squares per seat. Pull the old cushion — one piece or two — and match the build; the loveseat cushions page covers joined-deck builds.
Yes — front and back widths measured separately; more than half an inch apart is a trapezoid cut at the same formula price. The wicker-specific method is on the wicker cushions page.
They cost their own area — a corner wedge’s footprint prices like any piece its size, at the same per-square-foot formula as the seats. What corners cannot do is share a cutting line with the seats: two depths, a diagonal front, and a template-worthy angle make it its own piece on the form, not a square with a corner knocked off.
