Build Your Boat Cushion
Boat cushions are a different job from patio cushions: hull curves set the shapes, hatches and pedestals cut notches into them, and everything onboard cycles between soaked and bone-dry. The rectangle is the exception on a boat — trapezoid berths, bowed settees and radiused dinette ends are the norm.
We cut cabin and covered-boat seating in 50D+ high-density foam under waterproof Tech Fabric: shake out, stand on edge, air dry, and the cushion recovers. Odd shapes go in as paper templates — the hull curve beats numbers every time it gets a vote.

*One settee bench (60 × 20 × 4 in.): $45 make-base + 8.3 sq ft × rate ($29.47 per sq ft, 4" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). V-berth halves, dinette sets and full-boat packages are the sum of their pieces.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings run made-to-order cushions well above formula price once configured — and most only reveal that number after a quote request. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.
Popular Boat Sizes We Cut
| Piece | Typical size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| V-berth (two halves) | 60–78 L × 24–30 W each, 4–5" | Trapezoid halves meeting at the bow |
| Settee (port/starboard) | 48–96 L × 18–24 D, 4–5" | Follows the hull curve; often a bowed front |
| Dinette benches | 40–72 L × 20–24 D, 4–5" | Rounded corners at walkway ends |
| Helm seat | 18–22 W × 16–20 D, 4–6" | Sometimes hinged; cutouts for the pedestal |
| Aft bench | 48–84 L × 16–20 D, 3–5" | Fits between fixtures; frequently notched |
| Cockpit bolsters | 30–60 L × 10–14 H, 2–4" | Vertical cushions on coaming edges |
| Pontoon bench seats | 27–96 L × 18–22 D, 3–4" | Common runs are 27 and 36 in.; cut to fit inside the rails with about 1 in. to spare — mind the gate openings |
| Pontoon & bow corners | Varies — template the radius | 90-degree or rounded corner pieces that bridge two bench runs; corner shape follows your furniture line |
Typical boat cushion sizes by position (typical, always measure). Pontoon furniture lengths per Overton’s pontoon measuring guide.
Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers.
How to Measure a Boat Cushion
Boats don’t share dimensions the way patio sets do, so measure for the position the cushion lives in:

- Measure with the cushions out, on the hard surface underneath, to the nearest quarter inch.
- Paper-template anything with a real curve or notch; numbers alone lose where the hull bends.
V-Berths
Measure as two trapezoids — each half gets a front width (bow end), back width (aft end), length, and thickness. Order the halves as separate line items; where the hull bends more than the numbers say, send a paper template instead.
Pontoons
Measure the deck, not the old cushions: rail inside-edge to rail inside-edge, front to back and side to side, then subtract about an inch of clearance so the cushion never rubs the rails. Note where the gates open — a bench that runs through a gate opening is two cushions, not one. For a seating swap rather than a like-for-like replacement, corner shape (round or square) decides the end pieces.
Cockpits, Settees & Curved Runs
Settees follow the hull curve: record the bow of the front edge, not just corner-to-corner depth. Cockpit seats meet coamings at odd angles and helm benches get notched around pedestals — the straight pieces go in as numbers, the odd ones as templates.

Marine Builds: What We Make and What We Don’t

Sort every piece on the boat into two piles: open exposure and covered. Covered and cabin seating is our lane — 50D+ high-density foam under waterproof Tech Fabric, which shrugs the soak-and-dry cycle that kills low-density foam early. Open-deck seating that lives in constant spray is a reticulated-core job, and we do not carry that core — a marine specialist is the right shop for those pieces, and saying so plainly is cheaper for you than finding out in season three. Fabric logic for the covered middle ground is in the fabric guide.
The pieces we cut for covered boats
- The V-berth — two trapezoid halves meeting at the bow, each with its own front width (bow end), back width (aft end), length and thickness; a paper template beats numbers where the hull bends.
- Settees and dinettes — long runs that follow the hull curve, often with a bowed front or rounded walkway corners; covered-cabin duty under waterproof Tech Fabric over 50D+ foam.
- Helm and aft benches — sometimes hinged, sometimes notched around a pedestal; the odd pieces go in as templates, the straight ones as numbers.
Marine Fabric: Mildew, Salt & UV
Three things kill boat cushions that patio cushions never face: sun reflected off the water (your cushion gets hit from above and below), salt spray that dries into crystals and grinds the weave, and humidity trapped under covers and inside closed cabins — the mildew pressure patio furniture simply doesn’t have.
Where our three tiers land on a boat: Tech Fabric is the workhorse — a waterproof, wipe-clean weave that carries cabin and covered-boat seating on this page. Cotton Linen suits dry interior berths away from hatches. Premium Velvet belongs in the salon on a boat that sleeps dry. Of the our fabrics, 38 are outdoor-rated weaves — solution-dyed olefins and canvases built for full sun.
| Sunbrella® (solution-dyed acrylic) | Budget polyester | Our Tech Fabric | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color life | The marine standard; Sunbrella’s own 5-year fade warranty applies to its brand | Fades within a season of full sun | Solution-dyed outdoor weaves; we make no fade warranty — we don’t promise what we haven’t tested |
| Water handling | Water-repellent; slow to dry once soaked | Soaks straight through | Waterproof face; wipe clean and it’s done |
| Cleaning | Hose off and air dry | Usually machine-washable covers | Wipes between washes — zippered closure, the cover comes off |
| Sweet spot on board | Open cockpits, constant-exposure helm seats | Nothing we’d put on a boat | Cabin, settee and covered-deck seating |
Under the fabric: 50D+ high-density foam that takes the soak-and-dry cycle without flattening — shake the cushion out, stand it on edge, let it air dry, and it comes back. What we don’t carry is a reticulated quick-drain core for seating that lives in constant spray; that’s a marine-specialist item, and the builds section above draws the line.

Why Boat Cushions Aren’t Patio Cushions
- Double UV. Water reflects sunlight back up, so boat seating takes rays from above and below — roughly twice the UV a patio seat sees in the same afternoon.
- Salt. Spray dries to salt crystals that abrade the weave and corrode stitching thread — one of the reasons marine-grade thread is its own spec on boats.
- Trapped humidity. A cushion zipped inside a closed cabin or under a mooring cover sits in damp air for weeks — exactly the mildew condition a patio cushion never meets.
- A different shape world. Trapezoid berths, bowed settees, notched helm benches — on a boat the rectangle is the exception. Patio sizing logic doesn’t survive contact with a hull.
So the honest rule: on covered boats and in cabins, patio-cushion logic transfers and our builds carry it; on open decks it doesn’t — the FAQ below draws that line.
And for the night layer: custom boat mattresses — 6–8″ sleeping pieces cut to V-berths, hinged lids and cabin berths — come off the same table and ship with your cushion order.
Boat seat cushions — helm chairs and cockpit benches
“Boat cushions” splits into two jobs: berths you sleep on and seats you run the boat from. Boat seat cushions are the second kind — helm chairs, cockpit benches, pontoon L-sections — and they ask one extra thing of the build: hardware clearance. Pedestal mounts, hinge boxes and slide rails all live under the seat pan, so the cut either works around them or drops loft where the mechanism swings, and a non-slip backing replaces ties wherever the frame allows it.
Measure the pan flat with the old cushion removed, corner to corner, and note any cutouts for controls or armrest posts before ordering. The marine fabric logic above applies seat-for-seat: solution-dyed acrylic for the UV a helm takes head-on, over the same 50D cores as every berth build we cut.
Frequently asked questions
Do you sell standard boat cushion sizes?
Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: common settee runs land 60–72 × 20 × 4, and typing those numbers into the customizer gets the same instant factory-direct quote — nothing stocked, nothing out of stock. Hull curves and notches are the pieces that go in as templates.
Can I use patio cushions on a boat?
Covered-boat seating, often yes — the build logic transfers. Open-deck and moored-boat seating, no: patio fabrics lack marine UV grades, and patio foam has no drainage path for constant spray.
How do you measure a V-berth cushion?
As two trapezoids: each half gets a front width (bow end), back width (aft end), length, and thickness — and a paper template beats numbers for anything with a real curve to it.
Do you make quick-dry boat cushions?
Not currently — we do not carry a reticulated core. Today we cut 50D+ high-density foam under waterproof Tech Fabric for boat work: shake out, stand on edge, air dry, and the cushion recovers. For seating that lives in constant spray, buy a reticulated core from a marine specialist.
What fabric do boat cushions use?
The marine standards are solution-dyed acrylic (for color life) and marine vinyl (for wipe-down cockpits). A waterproof woven — our Tech Fabric — covers the covered-boat middle ground at a mid price.
How long does a custom cushion take?
Made to order in 4–7 business days — rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge — delivered in 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build; we publish the number instead of burying it in a quote.
Do you make pontoon cushions?
Covered pontoon seating, yes — seat pads and bench runs cut to your deck measurements (rail inside-edge, minus about an inch, gates noted). Pontoon furniture that lives uncovered in constant spray is the same reticulated-core job we don’t carry; a marine specialist is the right shop there.
Can you add straps, ties or non-slip bottoms?
Not currently — ties and non-slip bottoms aren’t offered in our customizer, and we’d rather say so than sell an add-on we can’t supply. On covered and cabin seating, most cushions stay put under their own weight and the hardware already on the boat.
How do I keep boat cushions from molding?
Shake them out, stand them on edge, and air them dry after a wet day — the soak-dry routine 50D+ foam under waterproof Tech Fabric is built for. Store them dry and flat over winter, never bagged damp, and spot clean the cover if it ever smells musty.
Is a Custom Boat Cushion Right for You?
- We do not make quick-dry reticulated cores — and say so. Seating that lives in constant spray or open-deck weather needs a reticulated marine core we do not carry. Our build is 50D+ foam under waterproof fabric for covered-boat, pontoon and cabin duty: shake out, stand on edge, air dry. Constant-spray duty is a job for a marine specialist, and pretending otherwise wastes your season.
- Straps, ties and non-slip bottoms are the same honest no. They are not offered in our customizer and we would rather say so than sell an add-on we cannot supply. On covered and cabin seating, exact fit and the cushion’s own weight do the holding.
- Plan on spot cleaning, not the machine. Covers close with a zipper around the fill, so cleaning is a damp cloth and mild soap between washes — and the cover comes off for a full wash. The fabric spec is chosen for wipes; the washer is not part of the care plan.
- Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth. Tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″); anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error turns up.
