Build Your Breakfast Nook Cushion
A breakfast nook is a built-in bench that wraps a corner — two or three straight runs meeting at a corner block — and no two are alike, because most were built by the cabinet installer rather than the furniture factory. Widths follow the wall, the corner follows the house, and the house is often not square. Universal pads answer none of that.
Kitchen nook cushions and breakfast nook bench cushions are cut piece by piece to your numbers: each straight run measured separately, the corner block as its own piece, backs cut to the height your wainscot or window sill leaves free. The L-shape is preselected in the customizer — it draws the corner for you — and the whole set ships in one fabric run so the dye lots match around the corner.

Pricing — estimated starting at
| Fabric tier | Estimated price* |
|---|---|
| Cotton Linen | $250 |
| Tech Fabric | $250 |
| Premium Velvet | $250 |
*One nook bench run (60 × 18 × 3 in.): $45 make-base + 7.5 sq ft × rate ($27.37 per sq ft, 3" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). L-shapes and U-shapes are the sum of their pieces — two runs plus a corner block — each priced on its own area at the same formula.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings treat nook sets as quote-only upholsterer work — numbers appear after a conversation. No hidden markups: each part of the estimate maps to a size you can verify with a tape measure.
Popular Breakfast Nook Sizes We Cut
| Piece | Typical size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Straight bench run | 48–96 L × 16–20 D × 3–4" | Each leg of the L measured separately — they are rarely equal |
| Corner block | ~16–24 square, 3–4" | Its own piece; joins show if cut as one with the runs |
| Back cushions | 14–24 H, 2–3" loft | Height set by window sill or wainscot, not by preference |
| Seat thickness | 3–4" | 3 keeps kids at table height; 4 for lounging breakfasts |
| Storage nook (hinged lid) | Deck L × 15–17 D | Split at the hinge line, not the midpoint — same rule as outdoor storage benches |

How to Measure a Breakfast Nook Cushion
- Measure each run separately, end to end and front to back — the two legs of an L are rarely the same length, and the corner block eats depth from both.
- Check the corner before trusting it: measure corner-to-corner diagonally in both directions. Older breakfast nooks are routinely out of square by half an inch, and a square-cut cushion set shows the gap at the miter.
- Backs: measure the free wall height between seat top and window sill or wainscot rail — the sill sets the back height, not the other way round.
- Hinged storage seats: find the hinge line and split there; account for the lid lip so the front edge does not bind when it closes.

Fabric for the Busiest Bench in the House

Fabric comes in three tiers — cotton linen as the value pick, tech fabric for outdoor duty, premium velvet where softness leads. On foam, 50D at 3–4 inches holds the front edge where universal fiber pads flatten within a year of daily breakfast duty. The tier-by-tier comparison is in the fabric guide.
Breakfast Nooks We Build For
- The straight-run nook — one bench under the window: a single run cut end to end, 48–96 inches by 16–20 deep at 3–4 inches thick, the simplest build in the family.
- The L-shape nook — two straight runs plus a corner block, each leg measured separately because they are rarely equal; the L-shape in the customizer draws where every number lands.
- The U-shape nook — three runs and two corner blocks around the table; the sum of its pieces at the same formula, one fabric lot across the whole wrap.
- The hinged-lid storage nook — split at the hinge line, not the midpoint, with the lid lip accounted for so the front edge never binds — the same rule as outdoor storage benches.

Foam that lasts: firmness in four grades
Nook benches take more hours per week than any seat in the house, so the foam grade is the decision that outlives the fabric. We offer four: 45D for light daily use, 50D for family breakfast-and-homework duty, 55D where kids climb and adults linger, and 60D for the firmest rebuild that still reads as comfortable. Outdoor-exposed nooks swap to dry-fast foam in the same grades. Any grade can take a Dacron wrap — it softens the edge and adds half an inch of loft, which you account for by giving us the finished measurement you want, not the bare foam number. When in doubt, go one grade firmer than feels right in the showroom; foam softens in, never in reverse.
Covers only, when the foam is still good
If the nook cushions still sit proud and only the fabric has given up — sunfade, juice, one seam gone — you do not need a rebuild. We sew covers alone to your seam-to-seam measurements in any of the our fabrics, zippers where the originals had them, and skip the foam entirely. Not sure your foam qualifies? Press down hard: if your hand stays off the deck, covers alone will carry another five years.
Frequently asked questions
Do you sell standard breakfast nook cushion sizes?
Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: common runs land around 60 × 18 × 3 and 72 × 18 × 3 — type those numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote if they match your bench. Nooks were mostly built in place rather than bought, which is why the piece-by-piece measure stays worth ten minutes.
How do I measure an L-shaped nook bench for cushions?
As three pieces: each straight run end to end and front to back, plus the corner block as its own square — then check the corner for square with both diagonals. The full method is in our L-shaped bench measuring guide.
Should the corner be one cushion with the runs, or its own piece?
Its own piece: three cushions meet at the miter cleanly, rotate individually, and survive one spill without replacing the whole nook. A one-piece L saves two seams and costs you everything else.
How thick should nook seat cushions be?
3–4 inches: 3 keeps shorter sitters at table height, 4 for lounging; anything thinner bottoms out under adult weight at breakfast-and-beyond duty.
Can I get matching back cushions for a nook?
Yes — cut to the free wall height between seat and window sill, in the same fabric run as the seats so the dye lots match around the corner.
How long does a custom breakfast nook set take?
Your order starts at the cutting table: production runs 4–7 business days, with rush production at 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Delivery is 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.
Is a Breakfast Nook Cushion Right for You?
- The corner stays its own piece. Three cushions meeting at the miter rotate individually and survive one spill without replacing the whole nook — a one-piece wraparound turns every accident into a full re-order, which is why we cut it as three.
- The foam grade outlives the fabric decision. Nook benches take more sitting hours than any seat in the house; a 45D pad under family breakfast-and-homework duty dies while the fabric still looks new — 50D is the honest floor for daily nooks.
- Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and breakfast light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
- Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.
