Build Your Settee Cushion

The settee is the piece between everything: smaller than a sofa, more of a chair than a loveseat, upholstered like neither bench it gets mistaken for. Two seats, one long block, arms, a proud back — and a cushion set that dies on exactly the schedule every upholstered seat dies on: the frame outlasts the foam five to one. The people searching replacement foam settee cushions already know which half of theirs failed. So does this page.

Settee cushions indoor or covered-porch: most orders here are indoor seats — dining settees, entry benches, foot-of-the-bed pieces — in Cotton Linen or Premium Velvet over a 45–60D HR core, cut to your seam-to-seam numbers.

Both renewal lanes start here. If the covers are sound and the foam is flat, the answer is a refill: cut-to-size cores dropped into the covers you keep, the same service the U.S. foam specialists built their businesses on. If the whole set is past it — or was never right — the answer is a rebuild: full custom settee cushions, cut, filled and sewn to your measurements. Same factory, same calculator, half the waste.

*One settee seat (48 × 24 × 4 in.): $45 make-base + 8.0 sq ft × rate ($29.47 per sq ft, 4" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). Back cushions and other sizes price on their own area at the same formula — every settee, one calculator.

Refill lane: a foam-only core for a cover you keep prices from $45 make-base + foam rates by density ($22.04/sq ft at 4" 50D) — the same seat as a core runs $221. We publish both formulas so you can check the math before you order.

Popular Settee Sizes We Cut

Piece Typical size Notes
Settee seat 44–52 × 20–24, 4–5" The two-seat block; 50D standard, 60–65D for daily duty
Settee back 18–24 H × seat width Softer fills than the seat; boxed or knife-edge to match
Loveseat seat 48–60 × 20–24 Loveseat cushions — the wider cousin
Upholstered bench 36–48 × 16–18 Bench cushions — no back, same block
Sofa seats (per cushion) 20–28 × 20–26 Sofa cushions — the three-seat scale-up

Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers.

How to Measure a Settee Cushion

  • For a full rebuild, measure the deck the cushion sits on — between the arms, front to back, to the nearest quarter inch; thickness is the knee-height decision, usually 4–5 inches on settees.
  • Measuring for custom replacement settee cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • For a refill, measure the cover’s interior — seam to seam with the closure open — and deduct a nominal quarter inch per side so the core sits in the cover without fighting it. Type the finished size — if you measured the cover interior, make that deduction yourself; we don’t deduct it twice.
  • Back cushions: height from the seat line and width at the widest point; note whether the backs sit on the seat block or behind it, which changes both heights.
  • Weigh the density honestly: two adults on one shared block load it like a small sofa — 50D is the standard grade, 60–65D the heavy-traffic answer.
  • Full walkthrough with photos: our measuring guide.

Fabric for the Most-Photographed Seat in the

Custom replacement settee cushions construction close-up — foam core, fabric and stitching detail

A settee is usually a statement piece — the hallway’s hello, the landing’s punctuation — which is why its cushion fabric drifts formal: velvets, jacquards, textured knits. Practicality still gets a vote: hallway settees take coat-bag scuffs, entry settees take wet raincoats. The tier trade-offs are the same honest ones in our fabric guide.

Refill or Rebuild: Two Ways to Renew a Settee

The settee renewal market has two lanes, and the right one is decided by one question: which layer died? When the answer is the foam — the settee sags, the outline stays, the covers still fit — the refill wins on arithmetic: a cut-to-size core at foam rates restores the seat for a fraction of a rebuild, which is why several of the biggest U.S. foam retailers sell core-cutting as a stock service and have for decades. The demand is that routine.

    • The refill: measure the cover interior, pick the density, keep everything above the foam. The honest limits: a cover with split seams or a shredded lining puts money in the wrong layer, and no core fixes fabric that is gone. Settee-scale cores are ordered through replacement foam for couch cushions.
    • The rebuild: full custom cushions — new foam to your density, new fabric from the 119-fabric pool, sewn to your confirmed dimensions. The right call when the covers are as tired as the cores, or when the settee’s fabric left the room’s palette a decade ago.
    • The hybrid: new seat cores plus one new back pair, or a rebuild in stages — the order is cut per piece, so the settee can be renewed a layer at a time as budget allows.

The refill economics and cover-measuring method are laid out in our foam cut-to-size guide — the same logic at settee scale.

Indoor settee cushions: fabric and foam that belong inside

An indoor settee does not need outdoor fabric, and paying for it means a rougher hand under bare arms. The indoor path through the configurator swaps solution-dyed acrylic for Cotton Linen (breathable, soft, the dining-settee default) or Premium Velvet (the foot-of-the-bed and entry-hall choice that photographs the way it feels). Foam is the same 45–60D high-resilience core graded by body weight and hours per day — the settee that takes breakfast and homework gets the top of the band. If what you actually need is a new cover for foam that still stands up, that is a smaller job and we take it too: covers sewn to your seam-to-seam measurements, zippers where the original had them.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just the foam in settee cushions?

Yes — it is half this page’s job. Measure the cover’s interior seam to seam, deduct a quarter inch per side, pick the density, and a cut-to-size core drops in and restores the settee for a fraction of a full rebuild. Type the finished size — if you measured the cover interior, make that deduction yourself; we don’t deduct it twice.

What is the difference between a settee and a loveseat or bench?

Words more than furniture: a settee is a two-seat piece with arms and an upholstered back, between a loveseat and a bench in character. Cushion-wise it is a long seat block plus a back, measured exactly like either neighbor — deck edge to edge.

What foam density should settee cushions use?

50D for the daily two-seater; 60–65D when the settee is the household’s heavy-traffic seat. Two sitters on one shared block load the foam like a small sofa, not a pair of chairs — the grading logic is in how to choose foam density.

Do you sell standard settee cushion sizes?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: settee seats cluster at 44–52 by 20–24 inches, so if yours matches a common deck, type the numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote. Nothing is warehoused, so no size is ever out of stock.

Should I refill the old covers or order full new cushions?

Refill when the covers are sound — no split seams, no shredded lining, fabric you still like. Rebuild when the cover itself is failing; new foam inside a dying cover is money in the wrong layer.

Can you make the back cushions too?

Yes — seat plus back is the normal settee order. Backs run 18–24 inches high in softer fills, and matched sets leave the factory with the same loft and the same dye lot.

How long does a custom settee cushion take?

Every cushion is cut and sewn after you order — production is 4–7 business days, and rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Production is separate from delivery (3–6 weeks door to door); typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

How do I clean and care for the fabric?

Wipes handle the daily work — and every cover unzips for machine washing when a full clean is due. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts. See all fabric options in the configurator, and zoom the weave shots before you commit.

What if my measurements turn out wrong?

Contact us with photos and the measurements you confirmed, so we can review the build against your numbers. If the mistake is ours — outside the ±½″ tolerance, wrong fabric, wrong build — the cushion is remade free, any time. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we’ll help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time.

Is a Settee Cushion Right for You?

    • Refill or rebuild is the first question. Covers still sound with flat foam underneath is the refill lane — cut-to-size cores at foam rates; covers past it is the full rebuild. Ordering the rebuild when the covers have years left is paying twice for cloth.
    • Two adults on one shared block is a sofa load. Settees get graded like small sofas, not pairs of chairs — 50D is the standard grade and 60–65D the heavy-traffic answer, because the shared seat block carries both sitters on one span.
    • Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and entry light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
    • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.
