Description
Pair of wooden dining chairs with new firm oatmeal replacement seat cushions

Replacement chair cushions cut from your measurements — for dining chairs whose pads went flat, patio chairs the store no longer stocks, and inherited chairs nobody makes pads for anymore. The chair underneath is almost always worth keeping; the inch-and-a-half of tired foam on top is not. Three numbers per piece, and the chair gets another decade.

  • Factory Direct — The workshop that cuts it is the one that ships it
  • 119 Fabrics — Every fabric on the list, open in the configurator
  • ±½″ Tolerance — Measured cuts, not stock-chart guesses
  • Remake Free — Miss on our side and the remake is free

Why Chair Cushions Are the First Thing to Go

Chair manufacturers budget the foam like an afterthought. The pad that ships with a dining or patio chair is typically an inch and a half to two inches of low-density fill — comfortable in the showroom, compressed into pancake duty within a season or two of real meals. The fabric often outlives the foam; the frame will outlive the house.

That mismatch is the whole replacement market: sound chairs, dead pads. And it is why “universal” replacement pads disappoint — there is no universal chair. Our own measured library of furniture series documents chair seats from 18 inches square to 25 inches wide, depths from 18 to 26, thicknesses from two to five. Two chairs from the same collection can differ by an inch.

Custom cutting removes the guesswork entirely. You measure the old pad (or the seat deck), pick a density that actually matches how the chair gets used, and the replacement is yours alone — repeatable forever, because your numbers are the pattern.

Why replace the cushion, not the chair

A replacement from us is new high-density foam, cut to your dimensions, in any of 119 fabrics, sewn to a quarter-inch tolerance with a free remake guarantee. The chair keeps its decades; the pad starts a new life that outsizes the original.

Chair Cushion Sizes — What Our Measured Library Shows

Piece Documented range Examples from the library
Dining chair seat 18–25 in. W × 18–26 in. D × 2–5 in. T 18 × 18 × 3¾ in. and 22 × 24 × 4½ in. in the same category
Chair back 20–25 in. W × 15–22 in. H × 2–6 in. T Backs run narrower and thinner than seats, consistently
Lounge / swivel seat 21–23 in. W × 19–26 in. D Deeper seats want 4 in. + of new foam

Pricing — estimated starting at

Piece Example size (W × D × T) Foam Estimated price*
Chair seat 17 × 17 × 3 in. 50D $100
Chair seat 18 × 18 × 3 in. 50D $107
Seat + back set 18 × 18 × 3 + 18 × 16 × 2 in. 50D $202
Four seats 18 × 18 × 3 in. × 4 50D $428

*Per piece, priced live as you enter your own numbers: $45 cutting per piece, foam by density and thickness, fabric flat at $7.43/sq ft across all 119 options. Chair work is some of the most affordable custom cutting there is — small pieces add up slowly.

Rebuilding a full dining set? Enter each chair separately (they can differ more than you expect — measure them all) and the set total builds itself in the cart.

Foam & Density for Chair Replacement

Foam Best for Typical thickness
35D Guest chairs, holiday tables 2–3 in.
50D The honest default for daily chairs 3 in.
60D Chairs that host daily, heavier sitters 3–4 in.

The upgrade from factory foam is not thickness — it is density. An inch and a half of 50D outperforms three inches of the soft fill most chairs ship with. If the original pad was thick but weak, order the same thickness in 50D or 60D and the chair feels like a better chair than it was new.

How to Measure a Chair Cushion for Replacement

Measure the old pad if you have it; measure the seat deck if you don’t.

Measuring between the armrests of a dining armchair for replacement cushion sizing
  • Width — seam to seam at the widest point. For T-cushion pads, measure the full width including the wings, and select the T-cushion shape in the customizer.
  • Depth — front seam to back seam.
  • Thickness — bottom to top at rest, including the wrap.

Rounds measure diameter. One photo per chair settles everything else — and do photograph each chair’s tag if the set is mixed; “same set” is not a measurement.

Fabrics for a Second Life

Replacement is the moment to fix the fabric mistake the first pad made:

  • Cotton Linen — the everyday indoor standard; unzips for the wash.
  • Tech Fabric — wipe-clean duty for kitchen chairs and anything under age ten.
  • Premium Velvet & Chenille — formal dining rooms and the chairs that get photographed.
  • Pet-friendly weaves — the chair the cat claimed, recovered in something that survives the claim.

Patio chairs switch the customizer to the outdoor range — fade-stable, weather-ready options at the same flat rate. Mixing fabrics across a set (patterned seats, plain backs) is a normal order, not a special request.

Chair Pieces We Replace

  • Dining chair seats — square, rounded-back, T-cushion
  • Chair backs, including full-height dining backs
  • Kitchen and breakfast-chair pads
  • Patio and porch chair seats and backs
  • Swivel and lounge chair pads from the measured range

Rocking chairs, gliders, and odd antiques: measure the pad (or trace the deck), choose the nearest shape, and the tolerance covers the rest. One chair or fourteen — each is quoted on its own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure a chair cushion for replacement?

Seam to seam for width (at the widest point, wings included on T-cushions) and depth, bottom-to-top at rest for thickness. If the original pad is gone, measure the seat deck between the rails and choose your thickness. One photo per piece catches what numbers miss.

What density should replacement chair cushions be?

50D at three inches is the honest default for daily chairs — it already outperforms most factory pads. Move to 60D for chairs that seat people all day, drop to 35D for guest-only seating.

Can you make T-cushion replacements?

Yes — T-cushion is a built-in shape in the customizer, as are round, oval, half-round, wedge, notch, and L. Enter the wing measurements the shape asks for and the price reflects the real area.

Do your chair cushions have ties?

No — we don’t sew ties, non-slip backs, or piping; every cushion is a clean knife-edge cut. A pad cut to the true seat dimensions stays put by fit alone, and backs hold by leaning geometry. It is the same honest construction on every piece we ship.

Do the covers come off for washing?

Yes — every cover unzips, on all 119 fabrics. On a kitchen chair, that feature is worth more than any fabric upgrade.

Is there a minimum order?

No — one cushion is a normal order. Single replacements, the odd chair from a broken set, a single back from a lost pair: all regular work.

How long do replacement chair cushions take?

Standard builds leave the workshop in 4–7 days, rush builds in 3–5, with shipping typically 3–6 weeks. Your confirmation states the exact dates for your slot.

Can I match new cushions to my existing set?

Send the measurements and fabric choice that match the survivors. If you have a swatch of the original fabric, note the color family at checkout and we’ll confirm the closest of the 119 options before cutting.
