Description

A massage table bolster, cut firm and sized for the job

Four set sizes, two firmness builds, one price list — a wedge massage bolster that holds an arm, a leg or a torso exactly where the table alone cannot. A bolster is the simplest tool on a massage table: a firm block of high-density foam doing positioning work. Under the ankles of a face-down client. Under the wrists when the arms need a home. Under the knees of a face-up one. Every bolster on this page is a sloped wedge — a flat rectangular base, one low vertical face, a single gentle ramp — cut from the same 50D foam grades as every custom cushion this mill ships, sewn into a tailored woven cover, and priced 20% below the custom quote because the sizes are already set. All set sizes, made to order in 4–7 business days: pick a size, pick a build, order, done.

These bolsters come off the same production line as our replacement couch foam — the same 50D grades, the same cutting tables, the same woven covers from the fabric library. The difference is the process you skip: custom cushions are cut to measurements you send in and a person confirms before the blade moves. These eight SKUs are fixed sizes that cover the standard placements, so there is nothing to measure, nothing to confirm, and the price is 20% lower for exactly that reason.

Set sizes and prices — pick one

Four wedge sizes × two firmness builds, each priced with its fitted cover included. The widths and heights are the ones the standard table placements actually call for; the ramp slope is identical on every size. Firm and Layered cost the same at each size — the layered build is a construction choice here, not an upcharge.

Size (L × W × H) Best placement Firm — 50D Layered — firm base, soft top
18 × 7 × 4″ Under both ankles, prone; under the wrists $57 $57
22 × 7 × 3″ Low-profile ramp: ankle line for taller clients, side-lying shin support $59 $59
22 × 7 × 4″ Standard length at full height: prone ankles on longer tables $62 $62
18 × 10 × 4″ Wide build: under both knees in supine, under the thigh line $66 $66

Every price includes the fitted woven cover and the foam core — there is no separate cover charge. All set sizes, made to order in 4–7 business days: nothing is cut until an order lands on the cutting list, and then it goes straight on. A bolster needing other dimensions is a conversation for the order desk, not this page.

Choose from our fabrics — color is an order note, not a separate SKU

Every cover here is sewn from the same fabric library as the custom line — all fabrics, one price. The bolsters are not listed color-by-color because color does not change the cut, the foam or the price: choose from our fabrics in the configurator’s swatch library — linens, canvases, performance weaves — and put your pick in the order notes at checkout. The workshop cuts the foam, then sews the cover from the swatch you named. If the shade matters under studio lighting, the swatch page is the honest reference; the cover below shows the linen family that most massage rooms end up choosing.

Where a table uses a wedge

Bolsters are standard table equipment, and the placements are not optional technique — they are where the body needs the table to continue.

  • Under the ankles, prone. The classic: the ramp takes the feet out of flat compression for a full session. The 18 × 7 × 4″ takes both ankles of most clients; the 22-inch lengths suit taller frames and longer tables.
  • Under the wrists or forearms. When the arms rest alongside the body or on the table edge, a low wedge gives them a working surface — the 3-inch height of the 22 × 7 × 3″ is the gentlest grade.
  • Under the knees, supine. The wide 18 × 10 × 4″ accepts both knees side by side and takes the arch out of the low back’s resting position.
  • Between the calves, side-lying. The wedge runs the gap so the top leg is not stacking its weight on the bottom one — a low, stable alternative to a round bolster.

A working table usually runs two or three bolsters at once, which is why studios buy them in sets. The professional suppliers who dominate the search results sell fixed sizes in one soft grade; what this mill adds is the same thing it adds everywhere else — 50D and denser grades on the same cutting tables, layered construction when a single grade is the wrong answer, and covers from a 119-fabric library instead of one vinyl. The woven cover wipes down between sessions and spot-cleans.

Off the table: a firm leg wedge at home

The same wedge does quiet domestic work — under the knees in bed, under the calves on the sofa, as a low ramp in a stretching corner. None of it needs a clinic or an instruction card; a firm wedge under the knees is self-explanatory the first time you put it there. It is positioning and comfort, described exactly as that: we make no claims about swelling, pain, recovery or circulation, and nothing on this page should be read as one. For the rounded under-knee form rather than a ramp, see the half-round knee bolster pillow.

Firm or Layered — two honest builds

Firm is one density all the way through the block; Layered is a firm base with a softer layer bonded on top.

  • Firm (50D), single density. The same support from the table side to the fabric. This is the build when the bolster has to hold a set position for as long as the session runs, and when you want the feel identical on day one and year five.
  • Layered — firm base, soft top. A dense base layer with a softer layer above it: the base carries the weight, the top gives the last quarter-inch of give. It is a construction we document across the cushion filling types guide — the same logic as an HR core with a soft topper, applied to a 4″ wedge. On a table it is the long-session build: the shin rests on surface give while the position underneath does not sink.

Density is the lifespan spec as much as the firmness spec — a 50D piece holds its cut edges for roughly 5–8 years of daily use, where a low-density block dishes in months. What the D-rating means against the lb/ft³ numbers U.S. suppliers quote is laid out in foam density explained: D ratings vs lbs, and how foam is priced by density and area is unpacked in our foam pricing walkthrough.

Every bolster leaves through the same 11-point checklist

Fixed size does not mean unchecked — each order is read and verified before it ships. The list the workshop runs on every wedge, same as every custom piece:

  1. Foam density verified against the mill certificate before the block is touched — 50D means 50D.
  2. Length and width cut to the listed size and checked against the cutting list, ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″).
  3. Ramp slope checked against the wedge template — the same grade on every size.
  4. Layered builds bonded and cured full-length before any sewing starts.
  5. Cover fabric pulled from the same dye lot family as the swatch you named in the order notes.
  6. Cover panels cut with the weave direction running true, pattern aligned at the seams.
  7. Seams sewn flat knife-edge throughout — no welt cord, no piping, no tufting, no buttons.
  8. Corners and end faces walked twice at the stress points.
  9. Finished cover fitted on the finished core — not measured flat, fitted.
  10. Vacuum-compression pack test: the foam must loft back to cut dimensions within 24 hours of unwrapping.
  11. Label attached with size, density and firmness build before the box is sealed.

The honest limits of a set-size wedge

Four fixed sizes, two builds, no curves cut to order on this page — stated before you order rather than after.

  • These are positioning cushions, not medical devices. We make no claims about swelling, pain, recovery or circulation. If you are choosing support for a medical or post-operative need, follow your clinician’s guidance on what is appropriate before ordering anything from anyone.
  • The sizes on this page are the sizes. A wedge that needs to be 26 inches long, or 5 inches tall, or a different shape entirely is a custom piece — that conversation starts at the order desk. Choosing between four options is the trade you make for the 20%.
  • Nothing is added to hold them in place — nothing needs to be. No ties, no straps, no non-slip grippers: the flat base is the anti-roll system, and a bolster that needed sticky help was cut wrong.
  • Made to order means days, not same-day. Every bolster is cut and sewn after the order lands — 4–7 business days on the standard schedule. A marketplace block that ships tomorrow is the honest answer for a table that needs one this week; it will not be 50D foam with a 119-fabric cover.

Frequently asked questions

What size massage bolster fits a standard table?

The 18 × 7 × 4″ wedge is the default; the 22-inch lengths suit taller clients and longer tables. A bolster does not need to span the table’s 28–30″ width — it supports the ankles, the wrists or the knees, which are narrower than that. Under both ankles of a prone client, 18 inches catches the pair; over 6 feet of client, 22 inches stops the heels hanging off the ends.

What is the 18 × 10 × 4″ wedge for?

The wide build — ten inches across the ramp — is the supine and thigh-placement size. It takes both knees side by side with room to spare, and it carries the thigh line when a placement needs more bearing surface than a 7-inch ramp gives. Same slope, same heights, more width.

Firm or Layered — which should I pick?

Layered for long sessions and repeat bookings; Firm for everything else. The layered build puts a softer layer between the client’s shin or ankle and the firm base that holds the position — the difference you notice in the second hour, not the first ten minutes. Single-density Firm is the simpler choice when the bolster mostly needs to be a firm block that never changes. Both cost the same at every size.

How do I choose the fabric color?

Pick from the 119-fabric swatch library and name it in the order notes at checkout. Color is not a separate SKU here — it does not change the cut, the foam or the price. The workshop pulls the swatch you named, sews the cover from it, and the label in the box repeats it back.

Why do these cost less than your custom cushions?

Because the measuring-and-confirming process is missing, and so is its cost. The same wedge quoted as a custom cut — measurements submitted, checked by a person, then cut — runs $70–82 depending on size. Fixed sizes skip that loop, and the price is 20% lower: $57–66 on this page. Same foam, same tables, same covers.

Do they come with a cover?

Every bolster ships with its fitted woven cover included in the price, sewn flat-knife-edge from the fabric you named. Covers zip off for washing; ordering the bare foam without a cover is not offered on this page.

How long does an order take?

Made to order in 4–7 business days, then shipped direct from the mill; rush production cuts it to 3–5. Typical US custom shops quote 3 to 6 weeks for made-to-order pieces — the mill ships direct, with no distributor queue between the cutting table and your door.

Made by the mill that cuts them

  • Ten years of cutting foam and sewing covers on our mill floor — a bolster is the same blade and the same sewing, one width over.
  • The densities, the layered construction and the 119-fabric library are the same options offered on every custom piece — nothing on this page is a cheaper line.
  • Fixed sizes still get checked: each order is read against the cutting list before the foam is touched, and odd requests get a person replying, not a guess.
  • If we cut it wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″) — the piece is re-cut free, any time.
