Replace Sagging Couch Cushions in Three Steps
Replacement couch cushions take three steps: measure the old blocks, pick a foam density and fabric, confirm the numbers — and the couch is rebuilt without the frame ever leaving your living room. The frame will hold for fifteen years while the foam dishes in five; the couch is not dead, its cushions are consumables wearing upholstery clothes.
This page is for the three situations couch owners actually arrive from: the seats have sagged to half their loft and fluffing no longer holds, the series was discontinued and the brand would rather sell you a new sofa than the parts, or one block was lost, chewed or stained and the other two are fine. All three get the same answer — one block or the full set, there is no minimum order.
Open the Customizer — Rectangle Preselected →
Type each block’s width, depth and thickness, choose the foam grade and one of our fabrics, and the price appears as you type — the estimate you see is the formula we cut by, not a quote-request lottery.
Every Cushion Is a Shape First — Pick Yours
Before density, before fabric, a replacement cushion is a shape — and the shape decides which numbers the cutting table needs. Ten cards, eleven cut types — the notched card cuts left or right — cover every couch we see; each one opens the customizer with that shape preselected and its measuring fields ready:
Not on the list — a quarter-round corner, a three-quarter wrap, an arc no one has named? Trace the seat on kraft paper, label every dimension, and photograph it flat against a tape; templates are the normal route for shapes that resist a form. The per-shape measuring walkthroughs live in our measuring guides.
Pricing — Estimated Starting at $168
| Fabric tier | Estimated price* |
|---|---|
| Cotton Linen | $168 |
| Tech Fabric | $168 |
| Premium Velvet | $168 |
*One couch seat (24 × 24 × 5 in.): $45 make-base + 4.0 sq ft × $23.36 foam (50D at 5") + 4.0 sq ft × $7.43 fabric — all fabrics at one price. Loveseats and three-seat sofas are per-block multiples; back cushions price on their own area.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings run made-to-order cushions well above formula price once configured — and most only reveal that number after a quote request. No hidden markups here: each part of the estimate maps to a size you can verify with a tape measure.
Popular Replacement Sizes We Cut
| Piece | Typical size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat (2 seats) | 2 blocks of 20–23 W × 21–24 D × 4.5–5.5" | Sometimes one joined 44–48" block instead |
| Standard couch (3 seats) | 3 blocks of 20–25 W × 21–25 D × 4.5–5.5" | Count blocks before measuring — makers vary |
| T-cushion seats (notched) | Seat extends forward under the arms | The notch is the dimension people miss |
| Back cushions | Match seat W × 18–22 H | Usually fiber-filled; priced separately from foam seats |
| Seat thickness | 4.5–5.5" | Match the original — thicker changes seat height |
Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers, and the near-standard blocks live on the sizes shelf (the 24 × 24 square is a common seat fit).
How to Measure a Replacement Couch Cushion

Covers still sound, foam dead? The cheaper lane is a foam-only refill: cores cut to the cover’s interior restore the seat at foam rates instead of full-cushion rates — the trade-offs are compared in cushion covers vs full replacement. And before ordering, make sure the sag is really gone-dead foam and not just tired fiber — how to fix sagging couch cushions walks the diagnosis.
Full walkthrough with photos: our measuring guides — and the five mistakes we see most are collected in cushion measurement mistakes.
Foam Density, Then Fabric
Density is the spec that buys years: 35D for spare rooms, 50D for the daily couch, 60–65D for the seat that never gets a day off. Lighter grades dish within a couple of years of nightly use, and the front edge of a seat is where cheap foam fails first — the density grades are compared mechanism-by-mechanism in our high-density foam guide, and seat-vs-back fill choices in foam vs fiber filling.
The rates are published, not negotiated — same block, four grades, from the live cutting formula:

| Foam grade | Duty | One seat 24 × 24 × 5" |
|---|---|---|
| 35D | Guest rooms, occasional seating | $164 |
| 50D | The daily family couch — firm, most popular | $168 |
| 60D | Heavy daily use, larger sitters | $173 |
| 65D | Around-the-clock, commercial-duty | $180 |
Foam runs $22.38–$26.37 per sq ft at 5" thickness by grade; fabric adds $7.43 per sq ft — the same rate for all fabrics. Cut and sewn covers close with zippers (covers remove for washing); Tech Fabric is the wipe-clean one for kids and dogs, Premium Velvet is the cat-claw tier, Cotton Linen the breathable value pick.
| Our grade | The same job in retail language | Expected service life | Spec it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35D | The occasional-seating tier — what US tags call standard foam | ≈3–5 years if sat on daily; far longer on the light duty it is specced for | Guest rooms, decorative pieces, window seats |
| 50D | The tier US sellers mean by “high-density foam for daily use” | ≈5–8 years of family use | The every-evening couch, the daily dining set |
| 60D | Premium / HR duty | ≈8–10 years | Heavy sitters, long daily hours, light commercial |
| 65D | Commercial and marine spec | 10+ years — it outlasts the fabric around it | Bar stools, reception furniture, rentals |
Density and firmness are two different dials: density buys years, firmness buys feel. Firmness is graded separately by ILD — the pounds it takes to compress the foam a standard amount — and no formula converts a D-rating into lbs/ft³; the honest way to read across the two systems is by job and by years, unpacked in foam density explained: D-ratings vs lbs/ft³.

The Dacron Wrap Option — Softening the Edge
A Dacron wrap is a thin sheet of polyester batting wrapped around the foam core before the cover goes on — not a second cushion, a lining layer. What it does: it softens the hard edge of a bare foam core, rounds the corner slightly, and adds about half an inch of loft, which is why a wrapped block reads “upholstered” while a bare core reads “industrial.” On a replacement seat, it is the difference between crisp and cozy — a preference, not a requirement.
The measurement rule matters more than the batting: a wrap adds loft, so give us the finished measurement you want the cushion to be, not the bare foam number — we cut the core down so the wrapped, covered block lands on your number. The wrap is a build option rather than a formula line: add it as an order note and it is priced with your confirmation before anything is cut.

When to skip it: seats with tight-fitting existing covers (the half inch fights the cover), and any application where you want the firmest possible feel — the wrap rounds the edge slightly and softens the first half-inch of sit.
Sofas We Build Replacements For
Any couch, brand or no brand — and a measured shelf for the brands whose parts desks went quiet. A workshop that cuts to dimensions instead of model numbers can rebuild every seat and back your frame has.
- IKEA sofas — series pages with measured seat dimensions for Kivik, Ektorp, Friheten sleeper sectionals, Söderhamn, Uppland and more on the IKEA replacement shelf.
- Ashley and other US brands — measured collections on the Ashley shelf; discontinued lines are the normal case, not the exception.
- The discontinued couch — the frame the brand stopped stocking pads for. Dimensions in, blocks out, in the fabric you pick; the parts department is a tape measure now.
- The sagging couch — foam dished, frame fine: replacement blocks (or foam-only refills) put it back at working height for a fraction of a new sofa. The diagnosis walkthrough is in how to fix sagging couch cushions.
- Starting from a bare frame or a new idea instead of a replacement? That is the custom lane — custom sofa cushions covers it.

Replacement vs. Reupholster vs. a New Sofa
If the frame is sound, replacement blocks are the cheapest route to a couch that feels new — you keep the frame and swap the part that actually wore out. Here is how the three roads compare:
| Replace the cushions | Re-upholster | New sofa | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you keep | The frame, the room layout, the style you picked | The frame only — everything else is rebuilt | Nothing |
| What gets fixed | Dished foam, lost loft, stained or torn covers — exactly the parts that wear | Worn covers and tired foam, at labor rates | Everything — including the frame you did not need to replace |
| Cost driver | Per-block area — from $168 a seat, published formula | Skilled labor by the hour plus fabric — typically a multiple of the blocks | The whole piece |
| Lead time | Cut and sewn in 4–7 business days | Shop schedules typically run weeks | Delivery windows vary |
The decision rule from the sewing floor: covers sound, foam dead — foam-only refills; covers tired too — replacement blocks in the fabric you want; frame cracked or twisted — none of the three saves it, and that is the only case where the new-sofa aisle wins. The cost math against ready-made pads is unpacked in custom vs ready-made cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do replacement couch cushions cost?
From $168 for one seat block (24 × 24 × 5", 50D foam, any fabric). The $45 make-base plus area rates means a three-seat couch with fiber backs lands in the mid hundreds — a fraction of re-upholstery or a new sofa. Every part of the estimate maps to a size you can check with a tape measure.
Can I buy just one replacement couch cushion?
Yes — one block, no minimum. Single-seat replacements are a normal order here, not an exception we price-punish: a matching run of one gets the same per-block rate as a run of three. If the other two blocks are fine, replace the one that is not — and send us the old numbers so the new block matches its neighbors in loft and fabric lot.
Why do couch cushions sag — can I fix the ones I have?
Sagging is compressed foam, and compressed foam does not rebound. Rotating and flipping buys months; refluffing fiber backs can work for a season. But when a seat stays dished after fluffing, the foam has taken a compression set and new foam is the fix, not more fluffing — the full diagnosis is in how to fix sagging couch cushions.
What foam density should replacement couch cushions be?
50D for the couch the family actually lives on; 35D for guest rooms; 60–65D for heavy daily use. Density is the spec that buys years — the front edge of a seat is where light foam fails first, and the per-grade price step is single dollars, not tens.
Can I replace just the foam and keep my covers?
Yes — foam-only cores cut to the cover’s interior restore the seat at foam rates instead of full-cushion rates. When the covers are sound, that is the cheaper lane; the trade-offs are compared in cushion covers vs full replacement and the cutting logic in how to cut foam.
How do I measure a T-cushion couch?
Sketch the notched outline and label three widths: front, back and the notch. The seat extends forward under the arms, so a single width number cannot describe it — a labeled sketch plus seam-to-seam depth and thickness is everything the cutting table needs. Our forms accept 1/8" increments.
How long do replacement couch cushions take?
Made to order in 4–7 business days, delivered in 3–6 weeks door to door. Straightforward rectangles run toward the fast end; notched T-cushions and large sectionals take the full window. Rush production cuts the sewing to 3–5 business days. Typical US custom shops quote three to six weeks of production alone — we ship direct from the mill that cuts your blocks.
What if the fit is off?
Every block is cut to a stated tolerance: ±½" (±¾" over 36") — and anything outside it is remade free, any time you find it. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we will help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time. Contact us with photos and the measurements you approved, and we review the build against your numbers.
Do your cushions come with piping or welt cord?
Not as a standing option. Our sewing standard is clean, cord-free knife-edge seams — no decorative cord on any shape, any fabric. The flat profile wears evenly at the corners, cleans flat, and never traps debris along a raised seam.
How do I clean the covers?
Spot clean between washes — every cover unzips, so machine washing is there when due. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts.
What shapes can replacement couch cushions be cut to?
Ten shapes, one customizer — from plain rectangles to T-cushions, bowed fronts and half-rounds. Most couch seats are rectangles or T-cushions, but sectionals bring L-shapes and wedges, curved frames bring bowed fronts and D-shaped half-rounds, and every card in the shape selector above opens the builder with that shape preselected. Anything that resists a form — quarter-rounds, irregular arcs — goes through the kraft-paper template route.
What is a Dacron wrap — should I order one?
It is a thin polyester batting layer wrapped around the foam core, and it is a preference, not a requirement. It softens the edge of the bare core, rounds the corners slightly and adds about half an inch of loft — cozy rather than crisp. If you want it, give us the finished measurement you want and add it as an order note; skip it with tight-fitting existing covers or when you want the firmest possible feel. Details in the wrap section above.
How do I choose the fabric for replacement cushions?
By how the seat lives, not by price — all four families cost the same flat $7.43 per square foot. Tech Fabric is the wipe-clean pick for kids and dogs; Premium Velvet is the cat-claw tier; Cotton Linen is the breathable value pick; Chenille is the soft one, spot clean only. Pick by look and lifestyle in the customizer — all 119 fabrics, one rate.
