Replace Worn Rocking Chair Cushions in Three Steps

Replacement rocking chair cushions take three steps: measure the old set while it is still on the frame, pick a foam build and one of the fabrics, confirm the numbers — and the rocker is rebuilt without buying a new chair. Rockers outlive their cushions by decades: the hardwood frame and runners are sound long after the seat has flattened, the back has lost its shape, and the fabric has gone shiny and thin. An old rocker is rarely dead; its cushions are the wear parts.

This page is for the situations rocker owners actually arrive from: the forty-year-old nursery rocker whose cushions crumbled in the attic years ago, the glider whose seat went flat after two babies, the antique with a bowed seat no store shelf has ever fit, and the porch rocker faded grey by a few summers of sun. All four get the same answer — we cut to your measurements, any size, one seat or the full set.

Open the Customizer — Rectangle Preselected →

Type the seat and back dimensions, choose the foam build and fabric, and the price appears as you type — the estimate you see is the formula we cut by, not a quote-request lottery. Bowed seats, curved backs and glider three-piece sets all price in the same calculator.

Which lane are you in? Redesigning the look while the old cushions still fit — that is the custom lane: custom rocking chair cushions. Covers sound but the foam has flattened — a foam-core refill costs less: see foam replacement cushions. Worn out, gone, or never going to fit a size shelf — this page, start with the customizer link above.

Replacement rocking chair cushions made to your measurements — tailored seat and back set refreshing a worn wooden rocker

The honest first question is whether your rocker even needs custom cutting. If it takes a standard deck and a store-bought universal set fits it exactly, that is the cheaper route and we will say so. The owners this page serves are the ones the size shelves gave up on: S/M/L lists do not carry a 1950s bowed seat, a glider’s three separate pieces, or a nursery chair that needs a spill-surviving fabric. A workshop that cuts to dimensions instead of size codes has no shelf to run out of.

Pricing — Estimated Starting at $94

Build Estimated price*
2″ thin-build (35D) $94
Cotton Linen $100
Tech Fabric $100
Premium Velvet $100

*From price = 2″ 35D thin-build row above. One rocker seat (18 × 16 × 3 in., 3" 50D): $45 make-base + 2.00 sq ft × rate ($27.37 per sq ft, 3" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). A full seat + back set — say an 18 × 16 × 3 seat and a 19 × 17 × 2 back — lands near $200. Every piece prices on its own area in the same calculator.

For comparison: fixed-size replacement sets list lower because they are cut in bulk runs of a few standard sizes — the price of the shelf is fitting your rocker by approximation. We publish the formula above so you can check the math with a tape measure before you order.

Popular Replacement Sizes We Cut

Piece you are replacing Typical size Notes
Standard wood rocker seats 17–19 W × 16–18 D at 2–3″ The classic American platform-rocker deck
Antique and bowed seats 18–21 W at the widest arc, 16–19 D Front arc traced from a template — how-to below
Glider seats (Dutailier and similar) 19–21 W × 18–20 D at 3–4″ Seat, back and armrests are separate pieces — measure each
Nursery rockers and gliders Same decks as gliders and standard rockers Fabric choice matters more than size — see the fabric section
Rocker backs 17–21 H × 15–19 W at 2″ Bowed backs traced, flat backs measured straight
Porch rockers Sized like indoor seats The fabric tier decides fade life — see the fabric section

Yours differs? That is the point — we cut to your numbers, not to a size list. The near-standard squares live on the sizes shelf if you want a quick sanity check first.

How to Measure a Rocking Chair Cushion for Replacement

Measuring a rocking chair cushion seam to seam for a replacement — dimensions taken over the old cover while it sits on the frame
  • Measure the old cushions while they are on the frame, seam to seam, to the nearest quarter inch. The sewn dimensions of the old cover are the numbers the frame was built around — our cutting forms accept 1/8" increments.
  • Cushions gone or shapeless? Measure the frame instead: seat deck side to side and front to back, then match the original thickness so seat height does not change.
  • Do not “add a little for plumpness” — easing is cutting-table work, and nothing is cut until your numbers are confirmed against our database. Odd numbers get a phone call, not a guess.

The bowed-back template trace. A curved rocker back cannot be measured with a straight rule — the arc lives in three places at once. Trace it instead: tape butcher paper (a opened-flat grocery bag works) against the back slats, rub the seat edge outline with the side of a pencil, and mark the widest point of the arc plus both top corners. On the paper, measure the widest width, the center height and both side heights — four numbers and the traced outline. Photograph the paper next to a tape measure and send it with the order; the sewing floor cuts bowed backs from the trace, not from a guessed radius. Bowed fronts follow the same routine from the seat side.

The glider is three pieces, never one. Seat, back and armrests each get their own numbers. Glider seats run deeper than rocker seats — the platform does not tilt — and the back usually stands upright behind the seat with no overlap to hide a mis-cut seam. Dutailier and similar makers vary the armrest length by model year, so the arm pieces are measured, not assumed. The model-by-model walkthrough is in Dutailier glider replacement cushions, the full measuring guide in how to measure rocking chair cushions, and the mistakes we see most are collected in cushion measurement mistakes.

One rocker-specific trap before you order: seat and back are priced and cut separately, so measure them separately — backs are usually taller and thinner than seats, and a set quoted as one number is a set guessed. The full walkthrough with photos lives in our measuring guides.

Fabric by Where the Rocker Lives

A rocking chair’s address decides its fabric more than its age does. The nursery is a cleanability problem before it is a color problem: spit-up, formula and snack years land on the seat daily, which is why the wipe-clean surface of Tech Fabric is the nursery answer, with Cotton Linen for rooms that prefer a natural weave and accept spot-cleaning. The living-room rocker is free to choose on hand and color — Premium Velvet for a reading chair that gets used nightly, Cotton Linen for the guest room. The porch and sunroom rocker needs the fade tier: solution-dyed acrylic holds its color for years where a piece-dyed weave bleaches in a season or two of afternoon sun.

Caring for rocking chair cushions — cleaning and fabric care by weave type

All fabrics price the same, so the choice is honest: pick for the room, not for the budget. And when the whole set is replaced at once, every piece comes from one dye lot — seat, back and armrests match each other exactly, which is the part no mix-and-match replacement route can promise.

Rockers, Gliders, and the Rooms They Live In

Four owners arrive at this page, and each gets a different first question:

  • The antique and old-fashioned rocker — sprung seats and bowed decks cut decades before standardized sizing; fixed size lists never carried your numbers. What we need from you: photos of the seat frame from above and the side, plus the template trace. An antique with an intact seat frame takes a modern foam cushion happily — but we confirm the structure from the photos before anything is cut, because a cushion cannot fix a frame that needs repair.
  • The glider owner — Dutailier and every unbranded glider: three-piece sets (seat, back, armrests) cut to your measurements. The makers’ own replacement networks exist but model lines expire — the route comparison is in the glider rocker cushions guide, and the custom-build lane in custom glider cushions.
  • The nursery chair — the rocker or glider that puts a baby down every night: the fabric is the spec that matters, and it is covered in the section above.
  • The porch rocker — a half-outdoor address: indoor sizing, outdoor fade rules.

On brand-name gliders: Dutailier parts desks serve current models well and older lines patchily — the maker-network route, what it still covers and where it expires, is mapped in the Dutailier replacement guide. When the network no longer carries your model, the measurements are all we need; the frame does not care what logo shipped with it.

Not sure which type you own? The quick tell: runners that ride the floor are rockers; a fixed base with a gliding carriage is a glider; a glider with an ottoman in a nursery is almost always a multi-piece set. Both lanes price in the same calculator — rockers usually seat + back, gliders usually three pieces.

Foam Choices for a Chair That Rocks

Rocking is harder on foam than sitting still is: every arc of the runners drags the seat cushion forward and back a few millimeters, working the foam core the way a stationary chair never does. That shear is why density matters more on a rocker — 35D for the guest-room chair used monthly, 50D for the daily rocker and the nursery chair that gets an hour every night, 60D when the last set lasted five years and you want the next one to outlive the chair. Density buys years; it is not hardness — a firm-feeling thin cushion and a soft thick one can share the same density.

One money-saving check before you order a full set: if the covers are sound and only the foam has flattened, the cheaper fix is a foam-core refill — the same densities, cut to your measurements, in foam replacement cushions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy replacement cushions for an old rocking chair?

Yes — even when no size list carries your chair. Cut to the old cushions’ seam-to-seam numbers, or to the frame itself when the originals are gone. Antique sprung seats, bowed decks, gliders and nursery rockers all rebuild this way; one seat or the full set, there is no minimum order.

How much do replacement rocking chair cushions cost?

From $94 for a 2″ thin-build seat, $100 for a standard 18 × 16 × 3 in. seat (3" 50D) — all fabrics one price, and a full seat + back set lands near $200. The $45 make-base plus area-rate formula means every piece prices on its own area, and the estimate you see in the calculator is the formula we cut by.

How do I measure my rocking chair for new cushions?

Seam to seam over the old cover, to the nearest quarter inch, with the cushion on the frame — and bowed backs are traced, not measured. Tape paper to the back slats, rub the outline, and note the widest width, center height and both side heights. Gliders are three pieces measured separately. The full walkthrough is in how to measure rocking chair cushions.

What sizes do replacement rocking chair cushions come in?

Yours — we cut to your measurements, not to a size list. The common starting points: standard seats 17–19 × 16–18 in. at 2–3″, antique bowed seats 18–21 in. at the widest arc, glider seats 19–21 × 18–20 in. at 3–4″, backs 17–21 H × 15–19 W at 2″. Near-standard squares are on the sizes shelf.

Can you make replacement cushions for a glider or a Dutailier?

Yes — gliders are three-piece sets (seat, back, armrests), each piece cut to its own numbers. Maker networks serve current Dutailier models and expire on older lines; when yours is no longer carried, the measurements are all we need. The route comparison is in the Dutailier replacement guide.

What fabric should a nursery rocking chair use?

A wipe-clean surface fabric — Tech Fabric — unless the room calls for a natural weave. Nursery years are a cleanability problem before a color problem; Cotton Linen covers the natural-weave preference and accepts spot-cleaning. All fabrics price the same, so the choice rides on the room, not the budget.

Can I replace just the seat cushion on my rocker?

Yes — one piece, no minimum, same per-piece rate as a full set. One honest note: dye lots vary between production runs, so an exact color match to years-old fabric is the one thing no mill can promise — replacing the full set at once is how you guarantee a match between pieces.

How long do replacement rocking chair cushions take?

Made in 4–7 business days, shipped direct from the mill — typical US custom shops quote three to six weeks of production alone. The difference is the route: no brand, importer or distributor stands between the cutting table and your door. Straightforward squares run toward the fast end; traced bowed backs take the full window.

What if the fit is off?

Every cushion is cut to a stated tolerance: ±½" (±¾" over 36″) — and anything outside it is remade free, any time you find it. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we will help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time. Contact us with the order number and a photo of the cushion on the frame.

Honest limits, before you order

Three things a cushion cannot do, so you hear them here instead of after checkout: a broken antique sprung seat — a cushion covers a sound frame, it does not repair a sagging one; send photos of the seat from above and the side before ordering an antique, and we will tell you straight whether new cushions are the right spend. a glider with a grinding carriage — noise and sticking are mechanism problems, and the fix is frame service, not fabric. a standard rocker that a universal set truly fits — if the shelf fits your chair exactly, the shelf is cheaper, and we will say so.

Made by the Mill That Ships Them

  • We are the mill — ten years of cutting foam and sewing covers on our floor, now shipping direct. No brand, importer, distributor or retailer stands between the cutting table and your rocker.
  • Nothing is cut until your numbers are confirmed: every dimension is re-verified against our database before a single yard of fabric is cut, and odd numbers get a phone call, not a guess.
  • Made to order means any size, any piece, no minimum — one seat for the porch rocker or the glider’s full three-piece set, one run, one dye lot.
  • Cut wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — remade free, any time.
  • Shipping: made in 4–7 business days, shipped direct from the floor that cut them.
