Build Your Egg Chair Cushion

The pad that ships inside an egg chair is a placeholder, not a cushion. It is a generic round of polyester fill, cut thin so it folds flat into the box, and it does the one job an egg chair cannot forgive: it lets your weight straight through to the woven seat base. Six months in, the weave pattern is printed into the back of your legs and the search starts — a replacement, any replacement — and every listing turns out to be the same two-to-three-inch universal pad in different packaging.
We cut egg chair cushions to your numbers instead. Any diameter the basket actually measures, any thickness from 2 to 8 inches, in a foam-core build that holds your weight off the weave and rebounds for years. The difference is not subtle: a 4-inch 50D round sitting in the same basket turns a decoration back into the chair you bought it to be.
Open the Customizer — Round Preselected →
Enter the diameter (measured twice, across two axes) and the thickness you want, then pick your fabric tier and see the instant estimate. Hanging chair, freestanding pod, ceiling-suspended — the seat pad is the same build for all of them.
For a seat pad plus a backrest as a matched set, see seat + back sets for hanging egg chairs below — both pieces are cut in one order from one dye lot.
Why the Universal Pad Falls Short — and Thickness Is the Whole Story

A one-size round pad is sized to sort-of fit every basket, which means it fits none of them. Too small and it slides; too thin and you are sitting on wicker with fabric over it. The failure mode is always the same: the fill compresses to a centimeter, the woven bars underneath take the load, and the chair goes from favorite seat to fifteen-minute seat.

Thickness is the one specification the catalog pads never offer and the one your back actually cares about. We cut the same round pad at any thickness from 2 to 8 inches: a slim 2-inch refresh if your basket is shallow, 4 inches as the standard rebuild, 5 to 6 inches when the chair is the main seat, up to a deep 8-inch lounger build for oversized pods. Same diameter, same fabric — the thickness is yours to choose, and the price difference is a few dollars of foam, not a different product line.

The swap takes ten seconds and reads as a different chair. The round sits high enough that you settle into the basket instead of onto it, and the firm front edge keeps the seating position your knees remember from when the chair was new.
Pricing — Estimated Starting at $115
Round seat pads priced by diameter and thickness (50D high-resilience foam, any fabric tier — all fabrics price the same). Entered into the customizer these numbers are confirmed before anything is cut. Every estimate runs on the same formula as the rest of the site: a $45 make base, foam priced by density and thickness, and fabric at $7.43 per square foot — all 119 fabrics at one price.
| Diameter | 2 in. thin | 3 in. | 4 in. standard | 5 in. | 6 in. | 8 in. deep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 in. (51 cm) — compact pods | $115 | $121 | $127 | $131 | $134 | $144 |
| 22 in. (56 cm) — the common egg chair | $130 | $137 | $144 | $148 | $153 | $164 |
| 24 in. (61 cm) — oversized baskets | $146 | $154 | $163 | $168 | $173 | $187 |
Density shifts the number a few dollars either way: the same 20-inch 4-inch round is $124 in 35D, $127 in 50D, $129 in 60D, $132 in 65D — the full ladder is in the foam section below. A seat + back set starts near $225. One price list, no fabric upcharges, no per-piece surprises: the estimate you see is per cushion, and a set is simply the two pieces added together.
Popular Egg Chair Diameters We Cut
Egg chair baskets cluster around three round sizes. Match your measurement to the nearest column — and if yours is none of them, that is the normal case for us, not the exception: every order is cut to the numbers you enter, not to a size list.
| Basket type | Typical seat diameter | Typical thickness ordered | Seat pad from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact / kids hanging pod | 20 in. / 51 cm | 3–4 in. | $121 |
| Standard hanging egg chair | 22 in. / 56 cm | 4–5 in. | $144 |
| Oversized / double pod | 24 in. / 61 cm | 5–6 in. | $168 |
| Freestanding wicker pod | 18–26 in. / 46–66 cm | 3–5 in. | from $105 |

How to Measure an Egg Chair Cushion
Two numbers, both taken off the basket itself, not off the old pad — the old one has flattened and grown a centimeter in every direction. Measure twice, across two axes, and if the two reads differ use the larger one: a round cut a hair wide sits proud and even; a round cut narrow drops an edge into the weave.

1. The diameter (A)
Inside the basket, straight across the seat base at the widest point, edge to edge, tape passing over the center. Most baskets are not perfectly circular — measure front-to-back and side-to-side and send the larger number. If the old cushion still exists, measure its widest seam-to-seam span as a cross-check, then subtract nothing.
2. The thickness (C)
How deep you want the pad, not how deep the old one is now. Rest a straightedge across the top of a fully recovered old pad and measure base to straightedge — that tells you the original spec — then decide whether to rebuild it as-was or order thicker. Between 4 and 5 inches is the most-ordered rebuild for a standard egg chair.

Rounded or angled basket walls? Measure the flat seat base only — the pad should span the flat, not climb the curves. For anything beyond that (contoured seats, split bases), photograph the basket with a tape in frame and email us — we quote those from the photos before you order. The full walkthrough with diagrams lives in the egg chair cushion guide.
Hanging Egg Chair Cushions: Seat Pads and Seat + Back Sets

For hanging egg chairs we cut two things: a round seat pad, and round seat + back sets. The back pad rests against the inside curve of the basket behind you — cut as its own measured piece, not a strap-on afterthought — and both pieces come from one dye lot in one order, so the set matches itself exactly.
What we do not pretend to make: fully wrapped one-piece liners that enclose the whole basket interior, and covers with shaped openings for armrest cutouts. Those are upholstery projects, not cushion orders. If your chair needs something along those lines, send us photos and the basket measurements and we will tell you straight whether it is a job for our cutting tables or not.
Start a seat pad in the Customizer → | For the back pad, order it as its own piece with its three measurements and note the chair type at checkout — the two are cut together against your numbers.
Foam Choices: Four Densities, Thickness 2 to 8 Inches

Every egg chair cushion we cut is a foam-core build — a single high-resilience slab cut to your circle, wrapped and covered — because loose fill is what made the original pad die. The thickness ladder runs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inches; the density ladder runs four grades:
| Density | Feel | Best for | 20 in. × 4 in. round |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35D | Soft, easy compress | Light sitters, decorative chairs, kids pods | $124 |
| 50D | Supportive standard | The everyday rebuild — most orders | $127 |
| 60D | Firm | Main-seat duty, heavier sitters, deep baskets | $129 |
| 65D | Very firm | Lounger builds, therapeutic seating | $132 |

Rule of thumb from the cutting floor: for a hanging basket that gets sat in daily, 4 inches at 50D is the rebuild that outlives the chair. Go up in thickness before you go up in density — depth of foam is what keeps the weave off your legs; density is what keeps it that way in year three.
Fabric by Where Your Egg Chair Lives

All fabrics price the same, so choose for the weather the chair actually sits in, not for the budget:
Outside — balcony, patio, porch: the outdoor line is solution-dyed acrylic and polyester weaves built for full sun and rain; the color goes through the yarn, so it fades as slowly as fabric can. Open the customizer filtered to outdoor fabrics →
Inside — reading nook, sunroom, bedroom corner: the indoor line runs cotton-linen, tech weave, velvet and chenille in the same cut. Open the customizer filtered to indoor fabrics →

Where Egg Chairs Earn Their Keep

The reading nook
Ceiling-hung in a corner with a lamp and a shelf — indoors the chair earns deep hours, which is exactly where a thin pad fails first. The standard indoor rebuild is 4-inch 50D in cotton-linen or velvet; add the back pad and the nook is complete.
The balcony
The small-city-balcony classic: one hanging pod, one thick striped round, a fern. Sun and rain hit it sideways here — outdoor fabric and a 50D core, and bring the pad in for the two worst winter months and it will still look new in year five.

The covered patio
Pairs and triples of pods around a low table — the pod chair’s native habitat. Matching rounds in one dye lot keep the set reading as a set; mixed fabrics on purpose read as designed, mixed by accident read as replaced-one-at-a-time.
One seasonal note worth planning around: egg chair cushions are a spring purchase in practice — searches for them peak from March through May when the patio furniture comes back out. Order in the quiet months and the chair is ready the first warm weekend instead of naked until June.
Keeping It Clean

Covers unzip along a concealed edge and come off for washing — outdoor weaves hose off and dry in an afternoon. The pad that replaced the one above is four inches of 50D under solution-dyed acrylic; the difference five years makes between the two is the entire argument for buying thickness once instead of thin pads twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size cushion fits an egg chair?
Most hanging egg chair baskets take a round pad of 20, 22 or 24 inches across — but measure yours instead of trusting the size chart. Baskets vary brand to brand more than any furniture category, and the only number that matters is your own seat base measured at its widest point. If yours lands between the common sizes, enter the exact measurement — every order is cut to it, down to the half inch.
How thick should an egg chair cushion be?
Four inches at 50D is the standard rebuild; 5 to 6 inches if the chair is your main seat. The catalog pads run 2 to 3 inches and that is precisely why they fail — under adult weight the fill bottoms out and the woven bars underneath take over. We cut any thickness from 2 to 8 inches, so a shallow compact pod can stay slim while an oversized lounger can go deep.
Can you make replacement cushions for hanging egg chairs?
Yes — round seat pads and measured seat + back sets are daily work. The round pad matches your basket’s widest diameter; the back pad is cut as its own piece from three measurements. Fully wrapped one-piece liners that enclose the whole basket interior are a different kind of job — for anything contoured like that, send photos with a tape in frame and we will tell you honestly whether we can cut it.
How do I measure for a round egg chair cushion?
Two numbers: the diameter across the widest point of the seat base, and the thickness you want. Measure across two axes and use the larger read; measure the basket, not the flattened old pad. The full walkthrough with diagrams is in the egg chair measuring guide.
How much does a custom egg chair pad cost?
From $115 for a 20-inch round at 2 inches in 50D, $127 at the standard 4 inches; a 22-inch at 4 inches is $144 and a full seat + back set starts near $225. All fabric tiers price the same, the estimate you see in the customizer is the estimate you pay, and it is confirmed against your numbers before anything is cut.
Can an egg chair cushion stay outside all year?
In the outdoor fabrics, yes — that is what the solution-dyed line is for. The yarn is colored through, so sun bleaches it slowly and rain shakes out of it. The indoor weaves — cotton-linen, velvet, chenille — belong inside; if the chair lives on a covered balcony you can go either way, but uncovered means outdoor fabric, no exceptions.
How long does a custom egg chair cushion take?
Made in 4–7 working days (rush builds 3–5 days), delivered in 3 to 6 weeks from the ship date. Each cushion is cut, filled and sewn to your numbers at our own tables — there is no warehouse of sizes to pull from, which is the whole point — and shipping time depends on your address.
What if my measurements turn out wrong?
We cross-check every order against the basket norms before cutting, and a finished piece outside the ± ½ inch tolerance is remade free. If the error is in the measurement itself, we still want to hear about it — send a photo of the pad in the basket with a tape in frame and we will work out the correction with you rather than leave you a pad that almost fits.
Made by the Factory That Ships Them

We are not a storefront reselling a catalog: we are the cushion factory. Every egg chair pad is drawn, cut, filled and sewn at our own tables, one order at a time, by the people who will cut your next one. That is why a size chart cannot answer your question but we can.
