Build Your High Back Patio Chair Cushion
Tall patio chairs are the frames universal pads fail first: the backrest runs 24–32 inches of unsupported height, the seat deck is sized to one brand’s mold, and the big-box answer is a one-size hinged pad that bags at the shoulders within a season. The tall frame is also why these chairs are worth re-cushioning — wrought iron, wire-frame swivel rockers and vintage high-back dining sets outlive their foam by decades.
We cut high back patio chair cushions to your measurements — the seat pad and the tall back as two pieces priced and ordered together, so they leave the bench in one production run with the same loft, the same fabric and the same dye lot. Any width, any height, any thickness from 2 to 8 inches: type your numbers, get a factory-direct quote, and nothing is cut until you confirm them.
Start in the outdoor customizer — shape, measurements, fabric, quote.
Pricing — estimated starting at $119
Every fabric one price on the same measured cut, so the choice below is about density and weather, never about the bill. Each piece prices on its own area — the seat and the back are separate line items that ship as one matched set.
| Typical piece | 35D | 50D | 65D |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat pad 20″ × 20″ × 3″ thick | $119 | $121 | $125 |
| Tall back 20″ × 24″ × 3″ thick | $133 | $136 | $141 |
| Two-piece set, 50D (seat + back) | $257 — over the $158 free-shipping line | ||
| Thin-build seat 20″ × 20″ × 2″, 35D | $113 — for tight rail heights | ||
*USD 45 make-base per piece + area at per-sq-ft rates (foam by density and thickness, fabric flat at $7.43 per sq ft — every one of the 119 fabrics the same rate). Estimates rounded to the dollar; the configurator figures your exact numbers live. Covers close with a zippered closure, so the cover comes off for washing.
For comparison: a single standard-size tall-back cover — fabric only, no foam — runs $128 at the specialists and fits “most” frames on a made-to-order wait. A full foam cushion at your numbers from this page starts lower than that and is made in 4–7 business days.
Popular High-Back Sizes We Cut
| Frame type | Typical pieces | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| High-back dining chair | Seat 17–20″ squares × 2.5–3″; back 16–20W × 20–24H × 2–3″ | The six-chair run in one lot — see patio chair cushions |
| Wire-frame swivel rocker | Seat 20–22″ × 19–21″; back 27–32″ tall | Vintage Homecrest-style frames measure the wire cradle, not the old pad |
| Wrought iron tall-back | Seats 18–21″, radiused fronts common | Curved fronts cut as trapezoids — see wrought iron patio cushions |
| Wicker high-back | Seat 19–28″ W, fronts wider than backs | Trapezoid decks — see wicker chair cushions |
High-back cushion sizes by frame type (typical, always measure). Yours differs? That is the point — we cut to your numbers.

How to Measure a High Back Cushion
The tall back is two measurements and the seat is three — ten minutes with a tape, and the old pads only serve as a sanity check, never as the source.
Seat pad: width rail-to-rail at the widest point of the deck, front-to-back depth where your hand rests, and thickness of the old pad matched to where you want the seat to land against the arms. Curved front? Measure the straight depth and the widest overhang, or sketch it.
Tall back pad: width across the backrest at its widest, height from the seat deck (or the rail the back rests on) to the top of the frame, and thickness 2–3 inches for a back that reads full without crowding the shoulders. A back cut to the frame’s full height gets wedged in place by the frame itself — that is what keeps it standing, not hardware.
Measure each distinct piece once, then count. Six identical high-backs are one measurement plus a quantity — per-piece numbers cost nothing extra on our cutting forms, and the whole run matches.

One Piece or a Two-Piece Set?
Most tall frames shipped with a hinged one-piece pad — seat and back sewn together — and that is the first thing to decide on a replacement. We build high-back cushions as a matched two-piece set instead: the seat and the back are cut separately, ordered together, and sewn from the same fabric roll.
The honest reasons. A two-piece set lets you replace the layer that wore — decks die before backrests on most frames, and a seats-only refresh at half the cost buys years. It packs flat, ships protected, and the cover on each piece unzips separately for washing. And the fit does not depend on a hinge line matching your frame’s angle: each piece is cut to its own surface, so a 30-degree recline and a upright rocker back both get a flush fit.
The trade we will not hide: a two-piece set is two pieces on the chair, not one. If the hinge is the look you want, an upholsterer can join the two pads on the frame — the measurements and the fabric run are what we own.
Fabric for Tall Backs That Live in the Sun
A tall back is the largest sun-collecting surface on the patio — it stands vertical through the whole afternoon, so fade resistance matters here before it matters anywhere else. Solution-dyed acrylic is the class to beat for full-sun color life; the honest comparison of what “Sunbrella-class” means, and how our solution-dyed acrylics price against the brand name, is unpacked on the Sunbrella replacement cushions page. Tech fabrics that shrug a shower cover the weather side; cotton linen belongs on covered porches.
All 119 fabrics price the same per square foot — the choice is look and weather exposure, never a surcharge. Not sure which reads right on your deck? Email a photo of where the chairs live and we will say honestly how each fabric reads in that light.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a high back patio chair cushion?
Typical tall frames take a 17–22 inch seat square at 2.5–3 inches thick, with the back 16–22 inches wide and 20–32 inches tall at 2–3 inches of loft. The spread is the point of custom: wire-frame rockers run 32-inch backs while dining high-backs stop at 20, and both cut on the same order form.
Do high back cushions come as one piece or separate seat and back?
As a matched two-piece set — seat pad and tall back cut separately, ordered together in one production run so loft, fabric and dye lot match. Each piece prices on its own area at the same formula. The one-piece hinged look can be joined on the frame by an upholsterer; we cut to surfaces, not to hinge angles.
Can I replace just the back cushions on my high back chairs?
Yes — backs-only orders are routine on frames whose decks outlasted their backs. Measure the backrest, order the backs, and keep your measurements on file: a later seat order from the same numbers keeps the set consistent. Indoor tall chairs have their own page at chair back cushions.
How do high back cushions stay up without slipping down?
By fit, not hardware: a back cut to the backrest’s full height and width gets wedged in place by the frame itself. Where the slot runs loose, a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller and laid flat behind the cushion is the honest fix. We don’t sew on ties or gripper undersides — our factory can’t supply them reliably, so we won’t sell you the promise.
How much is a full set of high back cushions?
Piece by piece, transparently: $45 make-base per piece plus area at published per-sq-ft rates — a typical 20 × 20 × 3″ seat at $121 and a 20 × 24 × 3″ back at $136 in 50D, so a four-chair run of sets lands at $1,028 with free shipping over $158 already covered. The configurator gives exact figures for your numbers before anything is cut.
What fabric should high back patio cushions use?
Solution-dyed acrylic for backs that stand in full sun all afternoon — it is the fade class to beat — or a tech fabric where showers are the weather. Cotton linen is the covered-porch choice. All 119 fabrics price the same per square foot, so exposure picks the fabric, not the budget.
How long do custom high back cushions take?
Made to order in 4–7 business days — rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Typical US custom shops put you on a multi-week made-to-order wait for the same build; we publish the number instead of burying it in a quote request.
Is a High Back Patio Chair Cushion Right for You?
The frame decides. If the tall back stands square and the seat deck is a rectangle, your numbers go straight into the order form and the set ships as ordered. Radiused fronts, wing-shaped backs, wire cradles — sketch it, and the cutting room reads paper as fluently as digits.
Replacing chairs a few at a time shows: fresh foam has full loft and dye lots drift between batches, so one new tall back among five faded ones is visible across the yard. Replace in symmetry pairs at minimum — or bring the whole run into one production lot and be done with it. The replacement patio cushions page covers whole-set orders, discontinued lines and the measured brand libraries.
Covers unzip — removable and washable on each piece separately. Custom-cut means non-returnable: a cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth. Tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″) and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.
Made by the factory that ships them
Outdoor cushion factory for 10+ years — we cut, fill and sew every order ourselves. Every dimension you send is re-checked before a single yard of fabric is cut. Made-to-order means any fabric, any piece, no minimum. If we cut it wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — the remake is free and the policy never expires.

Questions on a tall frame? Email the factory with a photo and the tape numbers — an answer from the cutting floor, not a call center.
