Measure the bed frame, not the old mattress
A van mattress only fits if it is cut to the platform, never to a catalog size. Van beds are homemade: the platform is whatever your build gave you — a fixed deck across the back, a lengthwise loft, an L-shape stepping around a wheel well. Standard mattress sizes were never drawn for any of it, which is why so many conversions end up sleeping on a Queen that gaps at the walls, rides up the wheel arch or leaves a wedge of wasted floor next to the slider.
We cut camper van mattresses straight from your bed-frame measurements — rectangles for straight decks, tapered and notched pieces where the platform steps around arches or a bulkhead — in one piece of high-density foam, 6″ or 8″ thick, wrapped in the fabric you pick. Straight platforms go in as three numbers; angled corners and wheel-well cutouts go in as a paper template. Nothing is ordered from a size chart because there is no size chart for a bed you built yourself.

Platform longer than 120″ or wider than 72″, or a shape the configurator doesn’t list? Start from all 11 shapes — or send us the template and the order desk quotes it by hand.
Pricing — a 75 × 60″ van mattress, published up front
A single 75 × 30 × 6″ mattress runs $545 in 50D; the full 75 × 60″ queen-size deck runs $1,045 in the same spec. The formula prices every piece we cut: a $45 make-base plus the mattress top area at a rate fixed by foam density and thickness — fabric included, every fabric one price. The same arithmetic quotes your exact platform in the customizer, so you can check this math before you order.
| Foam density | Rate, 6″ thick* | Rate, 8″ thick* | 75 × 60″ — 6″ / 8″ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35D | $30.59 / sq ft | $32.75 / sq ft | $1,001 / $1,068 |
| 50D — what sleepers usually order | $31.99 / sq ft | $35.48 / sq ft | $1,045 / $1,154 |
| 60D | $34.09 / sq ft | $38.00 / sq ft | $1,110 / $1,233 |
| 65D | $36.38 / sq ft | $41.15 / sq ft | $1,182 / $1,331 |
*Rate = foam + fabric, all five fabrics one price. $45 make-base + top area × rate: the $1,045 queen is 31.25 sq ft × $31.99 + $45. A 75 × 35″ two-sleeper deck runs $628 in 6″ 50D; tapered and notched pieces are quoted live on their measured area in the customizer.

Van bed widths — the published reference
Three vans carry most conversions, and their cargo widths are publicly documented figures (conversion-industry specs, not ours). The width between the wheel wells is the number a fixed cross-bed platform usually inherits:
| Van (common wheelbase) | Width between wheel wells* | What it means for the bed |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes Sprinter (144″ WB) | ≈ 70″ | A 60″-wide mattress fits crosswise over the arches |
| Ford Transit (148″ WB) | ≈ 68″ | Crosswise queen is tight; most builds run lengthwise |
| Ram ProMaster (159″ WB) | ≈ 76″ | The widest of the three — 60″ sleeps crosswise with room to spare |
*Published conversion-industry reference figures — treat them as orientation only. Year, roof and body variants all move the number, and your own build owns the truth: the mattress is cut to your platform, measured once, wall to wall.
For orientation against catalog sizes: a US Twin is 38 × 75″, a Full 53 × 75″, a Queen 60 × 80″. The Queen’s 80″ length is what defeats most fixed platforms — the deck that fits is usually 68–75″ long, which is exactly the no-man’s-land between catalog sizes where custom cutting is the only honest option.
Three numbers, one platform — how to measure
Measure the platform the mattress will sit on, not the mattress you are replacing. The old foam has spread, shrunk and taken a set — it testifies about itself, not about the frame. The platform is the only trustworthy source:
- Length — wall to wall along the sleeping direction, at the level the mattress will sit (not the floor).
- Width — the narrowest clear span. If one end pinches against a cabinet or arch, measure it too and order the tapered piece that matches.
- Thickness allowance — floor to the lowest obstruction above the deck (a cabinet lip, the ceiling at the foot, a window sill you lean against). That clearance decides 6″ versus 8″.
Straight decks go in as those numbers. A platform that steps around a wheel well or runs into an angled bulkhead goes in as a paper template: kraft paper on the platform, crease it along every edge, cut, label which end is forward, mail it or photograph it flat. The hull-and-arch geometry beats numbers every time it gets a vote — same rule we cut camper seat cushions by.
Nothing is cut until your numbers are confirmed: dimensions are re-verified against the order, and odd numbers get a phone call, not a guess. The wider measurement discipline is walked through in our measuring guide.
Thickness & density: six or eight inches, 50D or 60D
Six inches is the van standard; eight is the upgrade for sleepers who want a mattress that behaves like one. Industry guidance for van mattresses generally lands at 4–6″; at 4″ most high-density foams still read as a pad, and every inch over that buys real support depth. We cut both fixed tiers so the choice stays honest:
| Thickness | Order it when | Density |
|---|---|---|
| 6″ | The default: most platforms, bedding still fits, headroom survives | 50D — the grade our order desk quotes by default |
| 8″ | Full-time sleepers, heavier bodies, side sleepers who bottom a 6″ out | 60D — the firm, fit-it-and-forget-it spec |

Density is not firmness; it is the lifespan spec — polymer per cubic foot, the number that decides whether the mattress still holds its shape in year five. A 35D mattress sleeps fine for the first season and dishes where you lie by the second; 50D is where sleeping loads stop being a problem, and 60D is the grade our order desk moves heavier and full-time sleepers to. The full decision walk-through — including 65D — is in our density guide.
Covers: five fabrics, one price
Every mattress ships in a fitted fabric cover — the rate tables above already include it, and all five of our fabrics price the same, so the choice is purely about how you live in the van:
- Tech Fabric (waterproof) — the van-life default. Condensation off cold walls, wet gear on the deck, coffee in bed: wipe it down and it’s gone. If the mattress lives on a platform against metal, this is the one.
- Cotton Linen — the breathable natural option for a finished, homely interior.
- Premium Velvet / Chenille — softness first, for builds where the bed doubles as the couch.
- PET weave — the durable, easy-clean middle road.
Swatch cards ship free before you commit — five fabrics in hand beats five names on a screen.
Van mattress or camper cushions?
They are different jobs and we cut both, usually for the same van. Camper cushions are the daytime layer — dinette benches, backrests that fold flat into a guest bed, jackknife-sofa segments — cut in 3–5″ seating foam that takes sit-cycles. This page is the night layer: the 6–8″ sleeping platform mattress that takes lying loads for years. A dinette that doubles as a bed once a month gets a cushion; the bed you sleep on every night gets a mattress. Order both in one build and they ship together.
Frequently asked questions
What size mattress fits in a camper van?
Whatever your platform measures — that is the whole point. For orientation: US catalog sizes run Twin 38 × 75″, Full 53 × 75″, Queen 60 × 80″, while van platforms typically land at 60–76″ wide and 68–75″ long. Most van beds sit in the gap between catalog sizes, so the mattress is cut to your three platform numbers instead of forced down to the nearest standard.
How thick should a camper van mattress be?
Industry guidance for van mattresses generally lands at 4–6″; we cut 6″ and 8″ because below 6″ a foam mattress reads as a pad. 6″ suits most platforms and keeps headroom; 8″ is for full-time sleepers, heavier bodies and side sleepers who press through six inches. The deciding number is your clearance — floor to the lowest obstruction above the deck.
Which foam density should I pick — 50D or 60D?
50D is the default and comfortably carries a nightly sleeping load. Move to 60D if you are heavier, sleep on your side, or plan full-time miles — the upgrade on a 75 × 60″ mattress is about $65 and buys years before any body impression sets in. The full density logic is in our foam density guide.
Can you cut around wheel wells or angled corners?
Yes. Straight decks go in as numbers; a wheel-well notch, an angled bulkhead corner or a tapered foot-end goes in as a paper template — kraft paper on the platform, creased along every edge. We cut the piece to the template so the foam follows the build, not the other way round.
How do I keep a van mattress from getting moldy?
Three habits, no mystery: a ventilated platform (slats or a drilled plywood deck so air moves under the foam), a waterproof Tech Fabric cover so condensation stays outside the foam, and standing the mattress on its edge to air out when the van sits. Vans condense; the mattress just needs to not be the thing that absorbs it.
How long does a custom van mattress take?
Standard production is 4–7 business days to cut and sew, then direct shipping — typical US custom shops quote 3 to 6 weeks door to door; rush production (3–5 business days) is available on request.
The honest limits
What we don’t do, so you know before you order: no tufted or quilted tops, no pillow-top layers, no piping or welting, no corner rounding, no built-in straps, ties or non-slip backings — every mattress is a plain cut foam slab in a fitted flat-seam cover, because that is what fits a platform and what we can guarantee. We don’t sell springs, latex or memory-foam blends — high-density polyurethane, cut to shape, is the one material we do properly. And the configurator tops out at 120 × 72″: larger or wilder shapes are welcome, but they go through the order desk as a hand quote, not a cart button.
Made and shipped by the same hands
Every mattress is cut in our own workshop by the crew that measures, sews and packs it — no drop-ship middle layer, no third-party factory you can’t reach. The rate you see above is the rate the customizer quotes, and the person who answers your email is the person who can walk to the cutting table. That is the whole operation: measure once, cut honest foam, ship it direct, stand behind the fit.
