Your window seat, finally comfortable
A window seat should be the most inviting spot in the house. In practice it is usually a slab of painted plywood or a worn-out bench pad that went flat years ago. We make custom window seat cushions cut to your exact measurements — any width, any depth, any thickness up to what your trim allows — in high-density foam and your choice of 119 fabrics, with a live price in our online designer. No emails back and forth, no quote forms, no waiting for a salesperson to reply.
Every cushion ships from our own workshop: we cut the foam, cut the fabric, sew the cover, and pack it the same day it passes inspection. Made-to-measure does not mean made-to-wait — production takes 4-7 business days, and shipping to the United States is free on orders over $158.

Most built-in window seats are an afterthought in the build: a hardwood lid, maybe a thin foam pad wrapped in fabric that compressed within a season. Sitting on one for more than ten minutes is a negotiation. The fix is not a stack of throw pillows — it is a single, properly sized seat cushion with foam spec’d for daily sitting.
Our window seat cushions are built as one clean, flat piece: a rectangle of high-density foam wrapped in your fabric with straight knife-edge seams and square corners. That minimal construction is deliberate. A flat cushion sits neatly wall-to-wall on a built-in bench, leaves the visual line of your millwork uninterrupted, and — because there are no tufts, cords or piping to compress and crack — it wears evenly for years. It is the style that suits shaker paneling, beadboard, and modern trim alike.

If your current pad has a permanent dent in the middle, that is a density problem, not an age problem. Replacement pads sold with furniture are typically 20-35D foam. We start at 50D and recommend 60D for seats that get used every day — the difference is the cushion still looks and feels new after a year of homework, coffee and afternoon reading.
Window seat, bay window, breakfast nook — we fit them all
“Window seat” covers more layouts than people realize, and our online designer handles all of them with simple rectangles:
- Standard window seat — one straight run under a single window. One rectangle, wall to wall. This is the most common build and the easiest to measure.
- Bay windows — the three-angled classic. You order three separate rectangles: one for the wide center section and one for each angled return. Where they meet, the square edges of each cushion butt together into a clean mitered corner, following the bench exactly.
- Breakfast nook — L-shaped or U-shaped banquettes around a table. Order two (or three) rectangles, one per straight leg of the bench. Corners meet the same way as a bay window.
- Mudroom and hallway benches — long, hard-working seats that need durable fabric and firm foam. Same rectangle, same process.
- Reading nook and under-loft benches — anywhere a flat bench meets a wall, a made-to-measure rectangle fits better than anything store-bought.

Because every section is its own rectangle, you can mix depths — a 17-inch-deep center section with 12-inch returns is common in bay windows where the angled wings are shallower than the front. Measure each section separately and enter each as its own cushion in the designer.

Not sure your space counts as a “window seat”? If you can trace a straight-sided flat area for a cushion to sit on, we can make it. Photograph the space, measure edge to edge, and the designer will price it. For anything with curved edges, send us photos first — straight-sided shapes of any angle are all fair game.
How to measure a window seat cushion
Measuring for a custom window seat cushion takes five minutes and a tape measure. Three rules cover ninety percent of builds:
1. Measure the seat flat, edge to edge. Lay the tape on the bench surface itself, from the left edge to the right edge for width, and from the wall (or window) side to the front edge for depth. Measure where the cushion will actually sit — not at the molding, not at the floor.

2. Measure the pad, not the frame. If there is an old cushion on the bench, measure the flat seating area under and around it, not the old pad’s bowed dimensions. Old pads curve up at the edges as foam collapses; your new cushion should be sized to the bench, so it lies flat and fills the space corner to corner.

3. Let the molding set your thickness ceiling. This is the measurement most people miss. On many built-ins there is a horizontal trim line — a molding, wainscoting rail, or window apron — running above the bench. Measure from the bench surface straight up to the bottom edge of that first horizontal trim piece. That height, minus breathing room, is the thickest cushion you should order, or the cushion will stand proud of the trim line and look oversized.
A recent customer illustrates the rule perfectly. Her nook measured 78 inches wide by 17 inches deep, and from the bench surface up to the first horizontal molding line was 19¼ inches. A 4-inch cushion was the clear call: comfortable sitting thickness, and roughly fifteen inches of visual clearance below the trim, so the window’s proportions stay intact. We could have gone thicker — 5 or 6 inches would still have “fit” — but the rendering she shared showed how a slimmer profile keeps the beadboard the star of the nook. When in doubt, 4 inches is the sweet spot for daily-use window seats.
For bay windows, measure each straight section separately: the center section’s width, and each angled return’s width, each measured along the bench edge it sits on. Depth is usually shared, but check each section — returns are often a few inches shallower.

Round to the nearest quarter inch — our cutting tolerance is tighter than that, but there is no value in measuring to sixty-fourths. If your bench width is between two round numbers, order at the larger one only if you want a snug fit under retaining moldings; otherwise round down a hair so the cushion drops in without wrestling.
Foam density and thickness guide
Two numbers define how a cushion feels and how long it lasts: thickness and density. Thickness is comfort and proportions; density is support and lifespan.

Thickness. For window seats we offer 2 to 6 inches:
- 3 inches — the choice for low moldings, minimal look, and spaces where the trim line sits close to the bench. Still comfortable for casual sitting.
- 4 inches — our most-ordered window seat thickness. Full comfort for daily sitting, proportionate under most windows, and compatible with nearly every molding height.
- 5-6 inches — deep, sofa-like sitting height for tall nooks where you want to sink in, and where the trim allows the extra height.
Density. We cut two grades, both far above the furniture-industry pad standard:
- 50D (medium-firm) — a balanced feel for seats used a few times a week. Slightly softer entry, still very supportive.
- 60D (firm) — our recommendation for daily-sat window seats, breakfast nooks and mudroom benches. Noticeably firmer, recovers instantly, and holds its shape for years of everyday use.

The quick way to think about it: density is what you don’t see. A 35D pad feels fine in the store and has a body-shaped dent by next winter. A 60D core looks the same on day one and day one thousand. For a cushion that will live under a window and get used every morning, 60D at 4 inches is the combination we ship most. If you want to go deeper on foam grades, see our guide to choosing foam density.
Fabric choices for window seat cushions

All 119 fabrics in our lineup are priced the same — the price of your cushion depends on size, thickness and density, never on which fabric you pick. They fall into five families:
- Linen and linen-blends (27 colors) — the natural, slubby texture that suits farmhouse and coastal nooks. Oatmeal and ivory linen are far and away our most-ordered window seat fabrics: they read warm in morning light, hide everyday dust, and photograph beautifully.
- Boucle and chunky weaves — soft depth and a relaxed, high-end feel for reading nooks.
- Velvet — deep color and a smooth nap for more formal rooms.
- Canvas and heavy cotton — the workhorses for mudrooms and kids’ window seats.
- Performance weaves — enhanced durability for seats that take daily abuse.
Every cover is sewn with a hidden zipper along the bottom edge, so covers come off for washing — standard, not an upgrade. Zippers are color-matched to the fabric and sit flat against the bench when closed.

Our sewing style across all fabrics is the same clean construction: flat, straight knife-edge seams and square corners. No piping, no welt cords, no tufting, no buttons, no rounded corners — a plain, tailored cushion that lets the fabric and your millwork do the talking.

Pricing
Custom does not mean opaque. Pricing is formula-based on size, thickness, density and quantity — calculated live in the designer above:
- Window seat cushions start at $154 (a 36×16×3-inch rectangle in 50D foam with any of the 119 fabrics).
- A typical full-size build — 78×17×4 inches in 60D — comes to $323, exactly what the recent 78-inch customer paid.
- All 119 fabrics are the same price. Oatmeal linen costs the same as navy velvet.
- Shipping: production takes 4-7 business days, then cushions ship factory-direct from China — 3-6 weeks in transit, free on orders over $158 (a single window seat above entry size typically clears the threshold; smaller cushions carry a flat $29 shipping charge).
| Size (W×D×T) | 35D foam | 50D foam | 65D foam |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36×16×3 in | $151 | $154 | $160 |
| 48×16×3 in | $186 | $191 | $198 |
| 60×16×3 in | $221 | $227 | $236 |
| 48×16×4 in | $196 | $202 | $212 |
Every combination runs on the same formula as the rest of the site: a $45 make base, foam priced by density and thickness, and fabric at $7.43 per square foot across all 119 fabrics. Odd widths (bay window returns, angled nooks) price by their true square footage in the online designer.
Compared with the traditional route — emailing a custom workroom, waiting days for a quote, paying upholstery-shop markups — the designer gives you the same made-to-measure result at a workshop-direct price you can see before committing. Our full custom cushion range uses the same pricing engine, and our custom bench cushion page covers the same build in bench proportions.
A recent 78-inch build
Here is how a real order came together last month, shared with the customer’s permission. She emailed us a rendering of her nook: an American farmhouse window seat in white beadboard, and she wanted cushions that matched the calm, linen-toned mood of the picture — oatmeal for the seat, ivory for the backrests.
Her measurements: 78 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and — the number that decided everything — 19¼ inches from the bench surface up to the first horizontal molding line. That molding height ruled out anything dramatic. We walked her through the logic: 4 inches of 60D foam gives a true sitting cushion, and leaves roughly 15 inches of clear beadboard below the trim, which keeps the nook looking tall. A 6-inch cushion would have swallowed the lower wall and fought the proportions of the rendering she loved.
She ordered the seat in oatmeal linen at 78×17×4 in 60D, added two simple flat back cushions in ivory to lean against the beadboard, and the build priced out at $323 for the seat. Production took four days: foam cut, covers sewn, zippers in, QC’d and packed. That is the standard path — the same one your order will follow.

Not every week brings a 78-incher. Another recent order was a 94-inch hall bench — one long rectangle, no back cushions, 3 inches thick in 50D because the bench sits under a low rail. Same designer, same process, four days in production. Whether your space is a compact 48-inch landing or a bay wrapping three windows, the workflow does not change: measure flat, check your molding height, enter rectangles.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure a bay window for cushions?
Treat the bay as three straight sections: the wide center and the two angled returns. Measure each section’s width edge to edge along the bench surface where the cushion will sit, and check the depth of each — returns are often a couple of inches shallower than the front. Order three rectangles, one per section. The square edges of each cushion meet at the angled corners and follow the bench line cleanly.
What thickness is best for a window seat cushion?
4 inches is our most popular and suits most daily-use window seats. Go 3 inches if your molding line sits low above the bench or you prefer a slimmer profile; 5-6 inches for tall nooks where you want a deeper sit and the trim allows it. The rule of thumb: measure from the bench up to the first horizontal trim, and leave most of that height visible.
Can you add piping, welting or tufting?
No — and we say that plainly. We make one construction only: clean, flat, straight knife-edge seams with square corners. No piping, no welt cords, no tufting, no buttons. It is a deliberate minimal style that suits window seats, and it keeps production focused and prices down.
Can you make curved or unusual shapes?
Any straight-sided shape is fine — rectangles, squares, and angled sections for bay windows and L-shaped banquettes. True curves (rounded fronts, semicircles) are not something we cut. If your bench has an unusual footprint, send us a photo and a top-down sketch with dimensions and we will confirm before you order.
How long does a custom window seat cushion take?
Production takes 4-7 business days from your order. Shipping from our workshop in China to the United States takes 3-6 weeks and is free on orders over $158. Total, plan on roughly a month to six weeks from checkout to sitting on it.
Are the covers removable and washable?
Yes — every cushion cover has a hidden zipper along the bottom edge and comes off fully for washing, at no extra charge. Zip colors are matched to the fabric.
Will the cushion slide around? Do you add non-slip backing or ties?
We do not add non-slip backing or tie straps — the honest answer is that our cushions are plain rectangles. In practice, a made-to-measure cushion cut to nearly the full bench area barely moves: its own weight and the snug fit do the work. On very glossy or sloped bench tops, a thin separate grip mat under the cushion (from any hardware store) solves it without changing the cushion.
