Description

Build Your Custom Ottoman Cushion

A custom ottoman cushion is a one-number job when the top is round and a two-number job when it is oval: measure across the top, pick one of our fabrics, confirm — and the pad is cut to your ottoman, not to a size list. Ottomans are the shape problem of outdoor furniture: the same catalog page sells a 16-inch circle, a 19-inch square and a 46 × 30 oval under one product name, which is why the replacement aisle so rarely has yours — and why every ottoman cushion we ship is made to measured numbers.

This page covers the tops people actually arrive with: porch poufs and stool ottomans that lost their pad years ago, round and square coffee-table ottomans, storage ottomans whose hinged lid needs a pad cut to the lid, and long bench-style ottomans that put two feet up at once. One pad or a matched pair — there is no minimum order.

Open the Customizer — Round Preselected →

Type the diameter (or long axis × short axis for an oval), set the thickness, pick the fabric tier — and the estimate appears as you type. The number you see is the formula we cut by, not a quote-request lottery. Square and rectangle tops are one shape switch away in the same tool; half-round and wedge tops live there too.

Indoor ottoman in the living room instead of on the porch? The measurements transfer and the build does not — start at the customizer and pick an indoor fabric. Ottomans long enough to be benches price and build like outdoor bench cushions, and matched deep-seat sets have their own page.

The honest first question is whether the frame underneath still deserves the pad. Press the top rim side to side — a sound ottoman frame does not rock — and check that wicker is tight and welds are intact. If the structure is sound, a made-to-measure top at a fraction of a new ottoman’s price is the cheapest route to furniture that looks re-bought, in any fabric the original never came in.

Custom round ottoman and stool cushions made to measured diameters — tailored pads on small round seats

Pricing — Estimated Starting at $89

Fabric tier Estimated price*
2″ thin-build (35D) $89
Cotton Linen $107
Tech Fabric $107
Premium Velvet $107

*From price = 2″ 35D thin-build row above. One round ottoman top (18″ dia × 3 in., 3" 50D): $45 make-base + 2.25 sq ft × rate ($27.37 per sq ft, 3" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). Round and oval tops price on their bounding square — an 18" circle prices as 18 × 18, a 46 × 30 oval as 46 × 30 — the same arithmetic the customizer quotes, published so you can check it with a tape measure before you order.

For comparison: big-box ottoman pads come in two or three fixed diameters that shrink from the catalog every season, and custom specialists quote made-to-order tops only after a quote request. We publish the formula above; every part of the estimate maps to a number you can verify.

Popular Ottoman Sizes We Cut

Piece you are covering Typical top size Notes
Pouf & stool ottomans 14–18″ dia or square The usual replacement search — sold pads cluster at 16 and 17, frames wander either side
Round coffee-table ottomans 24–36″ dia Bound-edge rounds; prices on the bounding square, see the formula above
Square storage ottomans 30–40 × 30–40″ Pad cut to the lid, not the box — see the storage note below
Oval & boat ottomans 36–48 L × 20–30 W″ Long axis tip to tip, short axis across the widest point
Bench-style ottomans 48–72 L × 18–24 D″ Seats two feet; past 72″ builds and prices as a bench pad

Yours differs? That is the point — we cut to your numbers, not to a size list. The near-standard squares live on the sizes shelf if you want a quick sanity check first.

How to Measure a Round or Oval Ottoman

Measuring a round ottoman cushion diameter — straightedge across the center, seam to seam over the old cover

  • Round tops: measure the old pad flat, seam to seam, straight across the center — then rotate a quarter turn and measure again. A true circle gives the same number twice; two different numbers mean the top is oval, and both go on the order.
  • Oval tops: long axis first (the longest run, tip to tip), then the short axis across the widest point, perpendicular to the first. Both to the nearest quarter inch — our cutting forms accept 1/8" increments.
  • Old cover gone or shapeless? Measure the frame’s top rim instead, outside edge to outside edge, and match the original thickness so the seat height does not change.
  • Thickness: stand the old cushion on edge and measure seam to seam — 2–3 inches is the ottoman norm; the sewing table adds the easing, so do not round up “for plumpness.”

Scalloped, bowed or notched edges — the half-round and wedge tops of porch sets — take one extra step: mark the straight edges and the two depth numbers on paper, and note them in the order comments. Odd numbers get a phone call before anything is cut, not a guess. The full walkthrough with photos is in our measuring guides.

Choose Your Fabric: Three Families, One Price

An ottoman top gets the sun, the rain and everyone’s shoes — more abuse per square foot than any seat on the patio — so the fabric decides how long the pad reads new. Our line runs three families, all at one price: Cotton Linen (piece-dyed weave, the value tier for covered porches and shade), Tech Fabric (solution-dyed olefin blends, the working middle tier for partial sun and daily traffic) and Premium Velvet (solution-dyed acrylic with a 5-year fade warranty, the build for full-sun decks). The tier-by-tier comparison lives in the outdoor fabric guide.

About the brand name itself: we do not sell Sunbrella — our Premium Velvet is the same solution-dyed acrylic construction, and the honest head-to-head (including where the brand premium is and is not worth it) is in Sunbrella vs regular outdoor fabric.

Custom ottoman cushion fabric detail — solution-dyed weave close-up on a tailored outdoor pad

One rule from the sewing floor: the fade life of the tier has to match the sun the spot actually gets. A covered porch does not need acrylic; an uncovered west-facing ottoman will bleach a piece-dyed weave in one to two seasons. And because a small top is the cheapest canvas on the patio, an ottoman pad is also the low-risk way to try the bolder weave you would not commit to on a full sofa — matched pairs ship in one run and one dye lot.

The Ottomans We Build For

  • The porch pouf and stool ottoman — 14–18 inches round or square — is the category’s center of gravity and its most common replacement search: frames wander a half-inch either side of the sold sizes, and a pad cut to the measured top solves it permanently. Small tops are the lightest pads on the patio — the first ones the wind walks — so that measured cut matters most here.
  • The coffee-table ottoman — 24–36 inch rounds and squares — doubles as footrest, seat and table, so it takes the hardest use on the patio. Thicker builds (4–5 inches) restore the height the frame was drawn with; the bound edge is standard on rounds, and prices run on the bounding square, not on pi.
  • The storage ottoman has one rule: the pad is cut to the lid, not to the box — inside the lid lip, so the hinge closes clean and the front edge does not bind. Note the lid depth in the order comments and the cutting table handles the rest; outdoor storage benches build the same way.
  • The bench-style and sectional ottoman — 48–72 inch runs — is really a bench pad with ottoman duty: same formula, same weather spec, and past 72 inches it splits into two flippable pieces like any long run. Sectional chaise ends and wedge corners price as their own pieces in the same order, one dye lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom ottoman cushion cost?

From $89 for a 2″ thin-build and $107 for a standard pouf top (18″ dia × 3", 3" 50D) — all fabrics at one price. The $45 make-base plus area-rate formula prices every size the same way: rounds and ovals on their bounding square, larger coffee-table and bench-style tops on their own area in the same calculator. Every part of the estimate maps to a number you can check with a tape measure.

What size ottoman cushion do I need?

The one your top measures — we cut to your numbers, not to a size list. The common starting points: poufs and stools at 14–18″ round or square, coffee-table rounds at 24–36″, squares at 30–40″, ovals at 36–48 × 20–30″. Sold sizes wander far from the label, so measure seam to seam before ordering anything.

How do I measure a round ottoman for a cushion?

Straight across the center, seam to seam, to the nearest quarter inch — then rotate a quarter turn and cross-check. Same number twice means a true circle; different numbers mean an oval, and both go on the order. Thickness stands the old pad on edge, seam to seam. The full walkthrough is in our measuring guides.

What fabric is best for outdoor ottoman cushions?

A solution-dyed woven over a foam core. Ottomans take shoes, sun and rain on the same square foot: covered porches run the cotton linen tier, partial sun runs solution-dyed olefin (Tech Fabric), full-sun decks run solution-dyed acrylic with the 5-year fade warranty (Premium Velvet). The tier-by-tier comparison is in the outdoor fabric guide.

How do I keep my ottoman cushion from sliding?

We don’t sew on ties or gripper undersides — our factory can’t supply them reliably, so we won’t sell you the promise. A pad cut to your confirmed numbers sits the top without wandering; for light pouf tops the wind can still move, a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller than the cushion, laid flat underneath, is the honest fix.

Can you make a cushion for a storage ottoman?

Yes — cut to the lid, not the box. The pad sits inside the lid lip so the hinge closes clean and the front edge does not bind; note the lid depth in the order comments and the cutting table handles the rest. Outdoor storage benches build the same way, split at the hinge line.

What thickness should an ottoman cushion be?

2–3 inches is the norm on ottoman tops; 4–5 restores height on coffee-table rounds. Match the old pad’s sewn thickness unless you are deliberately changing seat height — and remember the frame under a thicker pad stands that much taller under the coffee table.

Can I use an indoor ottoman cushion outside?

You can place it there; it will not survive the season. Indoor fabrics fade and stain, and fiber fills soak like sponges — an outdoor ottoman pad is the same measurements with a different build: weatherproof fabric, foam core, UV-stable thread. Indoors, the same customizer cuts upholstery-grade tops in velvet and linen.

Do you make square or rectangular ottoman cushions too?

Yes — round, oval, square, rectangle, half-round and wedge, in one customizer. Squares are the rectangle shape with equal numbers; half-rounds and wedges take two depth numbers and a note on orientation. Every shape prices on the same formula.

How long does a custom ottoman cushion take?

Made to order in 4–7 business days — rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge — delivered in 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build; we publish the number instead of burying it in a quote.

Is a Custom Ottoman Cushion Right for You?

  • Rounds and ovals price on the bounding square. A 30-inch circle prices as the 30 × 30 square that contains it — the published formula, checkable with a tape measure before you order. Storage tops are cut to the lid inside its lip, not the box below; note the lid depth with the order.
  • Day to day, plan on spot cleaning. Covers close with a zipper around the fill, so cleaning is a damp cloth and mild soap between washes — and the cover comes off for a full wash. The fabric spec is chosen for wipes; the washer is not part of the care plan.
  • Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth. Tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″); anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error turns up.

Made by the Mill That Ships Them

  • We are the mill — ten years of cutting foam and sewing covers on our floor, now shipping direct. No brand, importer, distributor or retailer stands between the cutting table and your ottoman.
  • Nothing is cut until your numbers are confirmed: every dimension is re-verified against our database before a single yard of fabric is cut, and odd numbers get a phone call, not a guess.
  • Made to order means any fabric, any shape, no minimum — one pouf top or a matched set for the whole sectional, one run, one dye lot.
  • Cut wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — remade free, any time.
  • Shipping: made in 4–7 business days, delivered 3–6 weeks door to door, direct from the floor that cut them. Rush production available.
