Description

Build Your Back Cushion

Back cushions die differently from seats: seats compress under weight, but backs shed their fill — fiber blows to the bottom corners, foam cores slump behind fabric that still looks fine, and one season the back is a fabric shell with a lumbar gap where the support was. The seat gets blamed first because that is where you notice, but the hollow back is the piece that makes a whole set feel finished or finished-off.

We cut back cushions to your measurements — sofa backs and loveseat backs, dining and wing chairs, bench backs and outdoor deep-seating backs — in fiber, foam core, or the wrapped build, with loft matched to the frame instead of the catalog average. Order backs alone to revive a set whose seats still rebound, or as seat and back cushions in one production run so every piece shares the same fabric lot.

Pricing — estimated starting at

Fabric tier Estimated price*
Cotton Linen $136
Tech Fabric $136
Premium Velvet $136

*One sofa-scale back (22 × 20 × 4 in.): $45 make-base + 3.1 sq ft × rate ($29.47 per sq ft, 4" 50D foam + fabric, all fabrics one price). Chair-scale and bench-scale backs cost less; fiber-fill builds and wedge cuts price on their own area. Every dimension is confirmed before we cut.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings price back pieces only as part of quote-only full sets — backs alone rarely get a number at all. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

Popular Back Sizes We Cut

Piece Typical size Notes
Sofa / couch back Matches seat W × 18–22 H, 4–6" loft Usually fiber or wrapped; one back per seat block — see sofa cushions
Loveseat back 2 blocks, 20–23 W × 18–22 H Or one joined back on two-seat frames
Chair back (dining / side) 16–20 W × 16–20 H, 2–3" Sized to the slat frame — see chair back cushions for the full chart
High back / wing back 18–24 W × 24–32 H Outline pieces when wings wrap the sides
Bench / nook back 14–24 H, 2–3" loft Height set by window sill or rail, not preference
Outdoor deep-seating back Matches seat W × 18–26 H, 4–7" loft Wedge (thicker at the bottom) is common — see deep seat cushions

Yours differs? That’s the point — we cut to your numbers.

How to Measure a Back Cushion

  • Measure the slot, not the shell: width between the arms or frame rails where the back sits, height from the seat deck to the top edge, to the nearest quarter inch — a back ordered to the flattened old pad’s numbers comes out shorter than the frame it must fill.
  • Measuring for custom back cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • Loft at the top and the bottom separately — wedge backs are thicker at the bottom by design, and a rectangle cut on a wedge frame gaps at the shoulders.
  • Note the fit before ordering: backs stay put by a snug fit to the slot, by the frame wedging them in place, or — where the slot is loose — by a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller behind the pad.
  • Ordering backs for an outdoor set? Outdoor chair back cushions follow the same measuring method with weatherproof fabric and vented builds — start from outdoor cushions.
  • Full walkthrough with photos: our measuring guide.

Fill Decides the Years, Fabric Decides the Ro

The fill is the whole lifespan decision on a back: fiber-only backs are the catalog default and the first thing to hollow out; a 45–50D foam core or a wrapped build holds its shape for years of leaning — the fill comparison is unpacked in our filling types guide. Fabric follows the room: cotton linen breathes, premium velvet takes formal rooms and stands up to claws, tech fabric wipes clean where pets and spills rule. Whatever you choose, order backs and seats in one run — a matched set needs one dye lot.

    The Backs We Rebuild

    • Sofa and loveseat backs — one back per seat block, matched in width and ordered with the seats so the set shares one loft and one dye lot. Fiber, foam core or wrapped — the fill decides the years. Order seats and backs together on replacement couch cushions so loft and dye lot match.
    • Dining and side chair backs — 16–20 inch squares of 2–3 inch foam that fill the lumbar gap; see chair back cushions for the full chair chart.
    • Bench and nook backs — height set by the window sill or rail, not preference; the built-in cousins on window seat cushions.
    • Outdoor deep-seating backs — 4–7 inch lofted and wedged builds at deep seat cushions, weatherproof fabrics preselected.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I order standard back cushion sizes?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: sofa backs run the same width as their seat blocks at 18–22 inches high, chair backs cluster at 16–20 squares — type the standard numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote. Nothing is warehoused, so a standard back is never out of stock.

How do I measure for a replacement back cushion?

Measure the slot the back lives in: width between arms or rails, height from seat deck to top edge, and loft at top and bottom — to the nearest quarter inch, off the frame rather than the flattened old pad. Full method: our three-step measuring guide.

Can I replace just the back cushions and keep the seats?

Yes — when the seats still rebound, backs alone revive the set. Two cautions: new backs sit slightly proud against old seats (full loft vs settled fill), and fabric ordered later will not match the original dye lot — which is why many customers end up ordering seat and back cushions together as one run.

What fill should back cushions use?

Fiber for the soft upholstered look and regular refluffing; a 45–50D foam core for backs that must hold a lumbar shape with zero maintenance; the wrapped build (foam core in a fiber jacket) for the middle. Fiber is why catalog backs hollow out first — the fill migrates every time someone leans back.

Do you make outdoor back cushions too?

Yes — outdoor chair back cushions and deep-seating backs are daily work: weatherproof fabrics over vented foam-core builds, with attachment that survives open frames and wind. The outdoor fabric logic is in the fabric guide, and outdoor cushions is the hub for that side.

How long does a custom back cushion take?

Every cushion is cut and sewn after you order — production is 4–7 business days, and rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Production is separate from delivery (3–6 weeks door to door); typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

How do I clean and care for the fabric?

Wipes handle the daily work — and every cover unzips for machine washing when a full clean is due. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts. See all fabric options in the configurator, and zoom the weave shots before you commit.

What if my measurements turn out wrong?

Contact us with photos and the measurements you confirmed, so we can review the build against your numbers. If the mistake is ours — outside the ±½″ tolerance, wrong fabric, wrong build — the cushion is remade free, any time. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we’ll help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time.

Is a Back Cushion Right for You?

    • New backs against old seats will show. Full-loft backs sit slightly proud against seats that have settled, and fabric ordered later comes from a different dye lot — if the seats are within a year of the same fate, one seat-and-back run is the honest order.
    • Backs die from fill loss, not compression. Fiber blows to the bottom corners and foam cores slump behind fabric that still looks fine — measure the frame, not the flattened old pad, or the replacement inherits the old pad’s sag.
    • Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and room light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
    • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.

Made by the factory that ships them

    • Outdoor cushion factory for 10+ years — we cut, fill, and sew every order ourselves.
    • Every dimension you send is re-checked before a single yard of fabric is cut.
    • Made-to-order means any fabric, any piece, no minimum.
    • If we cut it wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — remade free.
