What rocking chair cushions come down to

Search this phrase and you mostly find factory-made sets in two or three fixed sizes, sold on ties and tufting. Retail listings cluster from $30 to $70; made-to-order sets from small US workrooms run $110 to $160 with two to three weeks of lead time. What almost nobody offers is the obvious thing: cushions cut to the three numbers your particular rocker actually measures.

That gap matters because rockers vary more than dining chairs. Nursery rockers, spindle-back heirlooms, bentwood porch rockers and wide wicker frames all carry different seat widths, different back heights and different arcs. A “standard” set that fits one slides around on another — and on a chair that moves, a cushion that shifts with every rock is the problem you bought cushions to solve.

Measuring for custom rocking chair cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge with a tape measure

Measure edge to edge and send us the numbers — we cut exactly what you measured, no rounding to the nearest stock size.

Cut to your rocker, not to a size chart

Every set we sew starts with your tape measure: seat width, seat depth, back width, back height, thickness. Enter decimals or fractions exactly as you measured them — we cut to the numbers you send, in any size, no size chart you have to fit into. The classic rocking seat lands around 17″ × 16″, but vintage frames, jumbo rockers and narrow nursery chairs all get the same treatment: their numbers, not a standard.

For density, the recommendation that fits most rockers is 50D high-density foam for the seat and the back — supportive enough to hold shape through years of rocking. Prefer a softer sit or a firmer one? 35D through 65D are all one quote away, and the price updates live.

Seat, back, or the full set

Order either piece alone or both as a matching set. As worked examples at 3″ thickness in 50D foam: a 17″ × 16″ seat runs $97, a 17″ × 17″ back $100, so the full two-piece set lands at $197 — in the same fabric, sewn as one run so seat and back match exactly. Zippered covers come standard, so you can unzip and wash the cover without touching the foam.

How to choose a rocking chair cushion

Three decisions carry most of the value:

  • Thickness. 2″ keeps a low profile; 3″ is the most-ordered balance of plush and support; 4″ and up turns a hard rocker into a deep seat. Thickness moves the price linearly — the live quote shows the difference before you order.
  • Foam density. Higher density means the cushion keeps its shape longer under daily rocking. 50D is the workhorse; 60D and 65D for heavy daily use, 35D where softness matters more than longevity.
  • Fabric. Start from where the rocker lives, then pick by look — every one of the 119 fabrics is the same price, so pattern and color never change the quote.

Fabric by where the rocker lives

Indoor rockers — nursery, living room, reading corner — are served by the full 119-fabric library: cotton-linen looks, velvet, chenille and more. A rocker that lives on a covered porch or by a sunny window does better in the performance part of the library: solution-dyed acrylic and other outdoor-grade weaves that hold color and shake off rain. Pair a performance cover with high-density foam and a soaked cushion needs nothing more than a shake-out and an air-dry. Both routes live in the same configurator — browsing our outdoor cushion category shows the weather-ready lines.

Custom rocking chair cushions on a covered porch rocker

A covered porch rocker takes the same made-to-measure cut as an indoor one — pick the fabric to match the room.

Transparent pricing, every fabric one price

Every cushion starts at a $45 make-base, then scales with size: square footage times your foam-and-fabric rate. At the most-ordered 3″ 50D spec that rate is $27.37 per square foot — which is how the $97 seat and $100 back above were computed. The smallest build (16″ × 16″ × 2″, 35D) comes to $89; free shipping at $158, flat $29 below. No fabric upcharges, no quote black box — the configurator shows the final number before you commit.

How ordering works

  1. Measure your rocker’s seat and back — edge to edge, in inches, fractions fine.
  2. Enter the numbers in the cushion configurator and watch the live price update.
  3. Pick your fabric from 119 one-price options and confirm the quote.
  4. Your set is cut, sewn and shipped in 4–7 business days — or 3–5 with rush production.

Ready when your tape measure is

Frequently asked questions

What is the best type of cushion for a rocking chair?

High-density foam cut to your chair’s own measurements — 50D for most rockers — in a zippered cover you can wash. That combination holds its shape through the rocking motion and stays put because it fits the seat, not because it’s strapped down. Tufted fiberfill sets feel plush on day one but flatten under repeated rocking motion.

How thick should a rocking chair cushion be?

3 inches is the most-ordered balance. Go 2″ if your rocker is already comfortable and you just want softness; go 4″+ if the seat is hard slats or you want a deep, sunk-in sit. Thickness changes the price linearly — the live quote shows it as you type.

How do I make my rocking chair more comfortable?

Measure the seat and back and order cushions cut to those numbers — fit does more for comfort than thickness alone. If the seat already has a cushion that’s gone flat, replace the foam: our replacement rocking chair cushions line rebuilds to your frame’s specs.

What if the fit isn’t right?

Every dimension is re-checked before cutting, and anything outside our ±½″ tolerance is remade free — no arguments. That’s the standing promise on every custom cushion we sew.
