One square, your square
The square pad is the most common outdoor cushion in the world, which is exactly why so many of them are wrong: a quarter inch per side turns into a gap at the arms or a hangover that curls and cups in the rain. Stock squares come in three nominal sizes because retail needs three SKUs — patio furniture comes in dozens. Yours measured is a one-cut job.

The square universe, by side length
Square outdoor cushions cluster into three working bands. Dining squares run 17–19 per side at 2–3 inches — height matters at a dining table, so loft stays modest. Seat squares run 19–21 at 3–4 inches. Deep-seat squares run 23–27 per side at 5–6 inches, the block that made deep seating a category. Above those, a square stops being a seat pad and becomes a bench or daybed deck — same cutting, different page.
Whatever your band, the order is the same three numbers per pad — side, side, thickness at the seam — and the pad comes back cut to them in any of 119 fabrics. The full size landscape, including what “standard” hides, is charted in our sizes hub.
Squares are simple — and half an inch off
Two situations produce most mis-cut squares:
Frame openings. When the pad sits inside a frame — a metal patio chair with an opening, a woven deck, a slatted bench — measure the opening, then decide the overhang: exact for a pad that should sit flush, or half an inch proud per side to cover the rim. Ordering the outer frame size instead of the opening is the single most common measuring error we see.
Squaring the square. Measure both diagonals of the deck. If they match, the seat is square and one side length carries the order. If they differ by more than half an inch, the seat is a near-square rectangle — send both side lengths and the pad will actually be the shape you sat on. The rectangle-specific logic, including T-corners and notched arms, lives on our rectangle cushions page.
Measure before you order

Measure first: three minutes with our measuring guide — width, depth, and thickness at the seam, written down per cushion, not per set. Those three numbers are the entire spec: every square outdoor cushions order we sew is cut to them and nothing else.
Depth for a square with a back: front edge to the seat back, not to the frame behind it — the pad should meet the back cleanly without climbing it. And thickness reads at the seam, tape square to the face, never squeezed.
Related builds: custom patio cushions is the outdoor hub, round patio cushions takes the other geometry, and the fabric choice for full-sun squares starts at Sunbrella-class replacements.
Fabric options & estimated pricing
Every fabric one price, on the same measured cut — so the choice below is about feel and weather, never about the bill. Solution-dyed acrylics for full sun, tech fabrics that shrug a shower, cotton linen for covered spots: all 119 live in the fabric menu inside the order flow.

*USD 45 make-base per piece + area at per-sq-ft rates (foam by density and thickness, fabric flat at $7.43 per sq ft — every one of the 119 fabrics the same rate). Estimates rounded to the dollar; the configurator figures your exact numbers live, and the quote is settled before anything is cut.
Estimates for the typical pieces above; your exact figure is set by your three numbers. Covers close with a zippered closure (covers remove for washing).

Frequently asked questions
What are standard square outdoor cushion sizes?
Nominal retail squares run 17–19 (dining), 19–21 (seat) and 23–27 (deep seat) per side. The catch is “nominal”: actual decks vary by maker and era by half an inch or more, which is the gap you see at the arms on stock pads. Your measured side length beats every nominal chart.
Should a square pad overhang the frame?
Flush or proud, both correct — it is a look decision made once, then measured deliberately. Flush: order the opening size. Proud: add half an inch per side to cover the rim and keep rain off the frame edge. What fails is drifting between the two by accident, which is how corners curl and water cups.
My seat measures 21 by 22 — is that still square?
It is a near-square, and we cut it as the rectangle it is: send 21 and 22 both. The squaring check is quick — matching diagonals mean true square, mismatched diagonals mean send both sides. Either way it is one pad, three numbers, same pricing table.
Can I get square patio cushions in fade-resistant fabric?
Yes — all 119 fabrics in the menu run on the same cut, and the solution-dyed acrylic class is the right pick for full-sun squares, the most exposed shape on most patios. The fade logic and color-holding comparison is on our outdoor fabric comparison.
How much do square outdoor cushions cost?
Custom pieces start at the USD 98 entry piece in the table above and scale with size and foam density — every fabric one price, final quote confirmed before anything is cut.
How long do they take to make and ship?
Every set is cut and sewn after you order — crafted in 4–7 business days, rush service 3–5 business days, then flat-rate shipping to your door; plan on 3–6 weeks door to door.
