Description

Build Your Bench Cushion

Entryway benches, dining benches, mudroom seats, end-of-bed benches — they all share one problem: nobody makes replacement cushions in their size. Yours is 55 inches. The store pad is 48. Or 72. And the one that’s close is thin as a pancake and slides every time someone sits down.

Send us the measurements and we’ll cut a bench cushion to the exact length and depth of your seat — from a slim 2-inch hall pad to a plush 5-inch dining bench you’ll linger on. Choose foam density for how you actually use it and pick from indoor fabrics that take daily traffic. One bench or a whole mudroom row: made to order by the factory, no minimums.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings for made-to-order cushions in common sizes (16×16 through 24×24) run roughly $71–$119 before shipping — and most only reveal that price after a quote request. No hidden markups: each part of the estimate maps to a size you can verify with a tape measure.

Common Bench Sizes

How to Measure a Bench Cushion

  • Long runs (60″+) want high-density fill — standard foam dips at the midpoint within a season.
  • Measuring for custom indoor bench cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • Dining benches with backs: order seat and back as separate line items and measure each separately.
  • Rounded bench ends? Add the corner radius in the customizer instead of guessing the pad narrower.
  • Mudroom benches near the door: choose a cleanable performance fabric for wet boots and backpacks.

    Fabric That Takes Daily Traffic

Custom indoor bench cushions construction close-up — foam core, fabric and stitching detail

Bench cushions take more abuse per square inch than any other seat in the house. Performance weaves are the default recommendation — abrasion-rated for daily traffic, cleanable, and available in the textures that suit mudrooms and dining rooms alike. For protected spots and display benches, indoor-only polyester keeps the budget down. Both sew to the same exact dimensions. Sun-drenched spots can step up to Sunbrella acrylic; the full tier-by-tier comparison is in the fabric guide.

    Bench pad or bench cushion?

The two words get used interchangeably, but on an indoor bench they mark a real split. An indoor bench pad is the slim tier — 2 to 3 inches of foam, the build mudroom benches and kitchen banquettes run, where you want the seat to stay bench-height and the door to clear the people sitting on it. A bench cushion is the plush tier — 4 to 8 inches — for window seats and reading benches where comfort outranks headroom. Same three numbers either way: length, depth, thickness at the seam.

Not sure which tier your bench wants? The density-and-loft logic is the same one that drives our thick cushion builds (indoor benches take the same foams, minus the weather coverings), and built-in window benches have their own measuring traps covered on the window seat cushions page. One rule of thumb holds across all of them: when a pad keeps the bench usable as furniture and a cushion turns it into a chair, pick by what the bench is for.

    Frequently asked questions

How thick should a bench cushion be?

2–3″ for a hallway or entryway bench you sit on briefly; 3–4″ for dining benches where comfort keeps people at the table. Above 5″, a single long cushion gets unwieldy — consider splitting it into two pieces.

My bench is 70 inches — one cushion or two?

We make either. One piece looks cleaner on a display bench; two pieces (each ~35″) are easier to flip and store, and stay flatter over years of use. For 72″+, most customers choose two.

How do I stop a bench cushion from sliding?

A pad cut exactly to your confirmed length and depth is the first fix — a snug fit has no room to wander on a hard deck. A thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller than the cushion, laid flat underneath, handles benches that get brushed past a hundred times a day. We don’t sew on ties or gripper undersides — our factory can’t supply them reliably, so we won’t sell you the promise.

Can I order a standard bench cushion size?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks. Stock-friendly runs are 36, 48, and 60 inches long by 16–18 deep at 2.5–3 thick; type the numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote. Nothing is warehoused, so no size is ever out of stock — and odd lengths price on the same formula, not a premium.

What foam density does an indoor bench need?

50D for anything used daily — long runs dish at the midpoint first, and density is the spec that buys years there. 35D is honest for a hallway pad sat on in passing; the dining bench and end-of-bed runner want the daily grade. For the grade-by-grade breakdown, see how to choose foam density.

Can a bench cushion have rounded ends?

Yes — rounded and radius ends are a corner-radius option in the customizer: measure the straight edges and the radius, and the pad is cut to follow the bench instead of squaring it off. Very rounded ends over an inch or two get sketched like an outline piece.

What size cushion fits a storage bench?

The one cut to the opening, not the lid: measure the inside walls — typically 30–48 by 14–18 inches — and cap thickness at 2–3 inches so the lid latches. A storage bench cushion cut to the lid’s full width jams the hinge side and gaps the other; the lid, not comfort, sets the thickness budget.

How long does a custom indoor bench cushion take?

Your order starts at the cutting table: production runs 4–7 business days, with rush production at 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Delivery is 3–6 weeks door to door. Typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

How do I clean and care for the fabric?

Wipes handle the daily work — and every cover unzips for machine washing when a full clean is due. Tech Fabric is the easy one: a waterproof surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. Cotton Linen spot-cleans, with a low-heat iron on the reverse if it creases. Velvet can be dry cleaned or gently hand washed, brushing the pile flat to dry; Chenille is spot clean only — never brush the tufts. See all fabric options in the configurator, and zoom the weave shots before you commit.

What if my measurements turn out wrong?

Contact us with photos and the measurements you confirmed, so we can review the build against your numbers. If the mistake is ours — outside the ±½″ tolerance, wrong fabric, wrong build — the cushion is remade free, any time. If the confirmed number was simply off, the cushion was cut right; we’ll help you re-measure so the replacement fits the first time.

Is an Indoor Bench Cushion Right for You?

    • Daily benches earn 50D; hallway pads do not need it. Long runs dish at the midpoint first, and density — not fabric — is the spec that buys years there. 35D is honest for a pad sat on in passing; ordering it for the dining bench is paying twice for the same replacement.
    • Nothing is sewn on to stop sliding. We do not sew ties or gripper undersides — the factory cannot supply them reliably, so we will not sell the promise. A pad cut to the confirmed numbers sits the deck; a brushed-past-hundred-times bench takes a trimmed rug pad underneath.
    • Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and room light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
    • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.

Made by the factory that ships them

    • Outdoor cushion factory for 10+ years — we cut, fill, and sew every order ourselves.
    • Every dimension you send is re-checked before a single yard of fabric is cut.
    • Made-to-order means any fabric, any piece, no minimum.
    • If we cut it wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — remade free.
