The TÄRNÖ line at a glance
TÄRNÖ is the classic IKEA balcony line – solid acacia folding chairs and bistro tables, pre-stained, flat-storable, sold in enormous volume. The replacement problem is the seat: 15 3/8 inches wide and just 11 inches deep, against a universal outdoor-pad market built on 17-19 inch squares. A stock pad physically cannot sit flat on this frame – which is why the official pad program for TÄRNÖ runs a dedicated 14 1/8 x 12 5/8 inch chair pad.
When the era’s pad colorway retires, the frame keeps serving years past it. We cut to the same numbers – or to your measurements, in solution-dyed acrylic over 50D-plus foam that outlives the seasonal palette.

Folding geometry: why a balcony chair has a thickness ceiling
A folding chair imposes a constraint no stationary frame has: the pad has to live inside the fold. When the back swings down onto the seat, the cushion is caught between the two halves, and every extra inch of thickness is an inch the hinge has to swallow. Pads that are too thick stop the chair from closing fully, stretch whatever ties hold the pad in place, and in the worst case work the fasteners loose over a season of folding. On a seat this narrow, the practical band runs slim, roughly one and a half to three inches, and thinner is truer to how the frame was designed to store.
Look closely at the official pad size and you find a deliberate gap: the chair’s seat is 15 3/8 wide and 11 deep, but the pad made for it is 14 1/8 by 12 5/8. The width gives up an inch and a quarter on purpose, leaving room for the ties and the bound edge to wrap without bunching, while the depth actually runs longer than the seat so the front edge folds over the frame nose. A measured replacement can copy that logic exactly, or go edge-to-edge on the 15 3/8 width for a fuller look, trading away the tie channels. Either is defensible; what does not work is a pad cut big in both dimensions with no allowance, which ends up bowed in the middle of the slats.
Most TÄRNÖ sets were bought as fours around a bistro table, and batching matters more here than on any indoor line. Fabric cut for four chair pads and a bench or stool from the same bolt keeps the color identical across the set; fabric ordered in two passes a season apart can shift visibly, since outdoor weaves carry dye-lot variation like any textile. Measure one chair, multiply by four, order it as one run, and the set stays a set.
