The KIVIK line at a glance
KIVIK is IKEA’s big-seat comfort line – low armrests wide enough to sit on, pocket springs under the seat foam, and a depth (23 5/8 inches) built for naps. It is also one of the best-documented lines for replacements: the product pages publish seat width, depth and height, and the material section names the exact fill – high-resilience cold foam at 2.2 lb/cu.ft over a 2.0 lb/cu.ft polyurethane layer, with fiber-ball backs.
That is everything a rebuild needs. Seats cut to the chart numbers, in the density you choose – the factory spec is the floor, not the ceiling, for a daily-use family sofa.

Splitting a 70 7/8-inch deck: the block-count decision
The 3-seat KIVIK presents its replacement foam as one continuous 70 7/8-inch deck, and how you cut that span into blocks changes the sofa’s daily life more than any fabric decision. Two blocks of about 35 3/8 mirror the loveseat’s seat width and leave one seam at the center. Three blocks near 23 5/8 each echo the depth dimension, create two seams, and let you rotate three equal pieces the way you rotate tires, spreading the wear of the favorite seat across the whole sofa. One single block preserves the original bench look but cannot be flipped to distribute load, and a solid six-foot core is genuinely awkward to carry to the porch for airing.
The chaise is the piece that punishes guesswork. Its seat is 35 3/8 wide but 48 7/8 deep, a pad with more than eleven square feet of surface and a shape no stationary sofa produces. Because it carries full-stretch lounging weight, its foam works differently from the sofa blocks: one person’s full weight lands in the same zone every evening. Ordering the chaise in the same density as the seats is the default; going one grade firmer is the choice of households where the chaise is the designated reading spot. Either grade drops straight into the published 35 3/8 by 48 7/8 footprint.
Two smaller members of the line round out the math. The storage ottoman’s 35 3/8 x 27 1/2 top at 16 7/8 overall height sits just under the sofa’s 17 3/4 seat height, close enough to serve as an extra seat that lines up visually. And the aftermarket convention of rebuilding KIVIK seats as roughly 24 x 24 cores exists for a reason: it is the largest square that still clears the armrests and the visual rhythm of the frame, which is worth knowing even when your own measurements point to a different split.

The hammock effect: why wide KIVIK seats sag in the middle
KIVIK’s seat is one wide block — up to 70 7/8 inches on the three-seat — and wide foam supported only at the edges does what any span does under load: it bows. IKEA spec lists the seat as polyester wadding over foam, honest catalog numbers, but wadding is not structure. Ten years in, the center of the seat sits lower than the arms even when the covers look fine.
The rebuild answer is rigidity and block count, not just density. We cut KIVIK decks as two or three separate seat blocks — each block spans less, so the sag geometry never gets started — in 45–60D high-resilience foam (in upholstery terms, the firmness band reviewers call IFD 30–35, firm enough to span without feeling like a park bench). IKEA publishes depth and height for sectionals, not per-position seat widths — measure each block seam to seam (the ~24 × 24 in. core reference above is the proven split) and order the whole run in one production batch so fabric lots match.
No. Both are current big-seat lines, but KIVIK seats run 23 5/8 in. deep at a 17 3/4 in. seat height, while UPPLAND runs 22 7/8 in. deep at 18 1/2 in. — three quarters of an inch apart in depth, and three quarters the other way in height. Covers, yes — inner cushions, almost never. IKEA sells official fabric covers for every KIVIK piece as replaceable parts, but inner seat cushions exist only for the 2-seat loveseat and only in some European markets (around €70–80); the 3-seat, 4-seat, sectional and chaise foam is never sold separately in any market, and the US catalog lists none of the inner-cushion articles at all.
The fraction is the problem. KIVIK’s 23 5/8-inch seat depth and 17 3/4-inch height are metric conversions that universal inch-sized cushions round off, so a generic pad lands short of the deck or proud of the back. Measure seam to seam to the nearest quarter inch — quarter-inch decimals go straight into the customizer — and the cut follows your numbers, not a rounded chart.
