Description

Build Your Piano Bench Cushion

A piano bench is furniture with a job description: hold a player at exactly the right height, rock nothing, stay put. Its cushion is an ergonomic component, not a comfort accessory — half an inch of error in height changes hand position at the keys, and a pad that shifts mid-scale is worse than no pad at all. A custom piano bench cushion solves both at once: cut to the measured top, built at the thickness your bench height needs, and firm enough to keep posture honest through the practice hours.

Polished upright piano with its wooden bench fitted with a firm flat charcoal seat pad

Most orders here are replacement pads for standard artist benches, vintage benches with odd tops, and duet benches no retailer sizes for. Every pad is cut, filled and sewn to your numbers on the same floor as our sofa and settee work — one bench pad or six for a teaching studio, no minimum order.

Measure the Top, Not the Pad Before It

Piano benches cluster around a few standard tops — and the variation is exactly enough to defeat assumed sizes:

Bench typeTypical topNotes
Standard adjustable artist bench29–30″ × 13–14″Rectangular top; the most common replacement target
Fixed student bench (upright pianos)28–30″ × 13–15″Often slightly domed or contoured at the factory
Duet bench34–36″ × 14–15″Wider for two players; usually bought with the piano

Measure the wood top directly, edge to edge, with the old pad removed. For domed or contoured factory tops, measure the flat footprint the pad will sit on and note the dome in the order notes — the pad is cut flat to that footprint. Curved-end tops take a labeled sketch instead of three numbers, and nothing is cut until your dimensions have been confirmed by a human on our floor.

A piano bench top is not a dining stool seat, and the difference shows at the tape. Stools round their corners and hide inches under shaping; bench tops are square-cut, longer in the seat, and often narrower front-to-back than a kitchen chair — which is why a pad bought by “stool size” overhangs the edges or misses them entirely. The three numbers that matter sit on the top itself: width across the bench, depth front-to-back, and the thickness you need to keep the playing height. Duet players share one top, so many order two narrower pads with a small gap between them rather than one wide pad — the gap marks each player’s half and keeps one pad from drifting into the other’s space during page turns.

Common tops cluster in familiar bands — 19 by 36 inches around full-size duet benches, with single and practice benches running narrower in both directions — but those bands are reference points, not a size menu. Nothing is stocked: every cushion is cut to the three numbers you send, so an import bench that measures 18.5 by 35.25 gets exactly that, not the nearest round number.

Thickness and Density: The Height Math

Bench height is part of the instrument’s setup. Two inches is the classic practice pad — enough comfort for long sessions without lifting the player out of position; three inches suits players who sit high or share the bench with a young student. If the bench still adjusts, order thin and let the mechanism do the work.

Density follows the hours: 45D for the bench that gets weekend use, 50D for daily practice — the grade that survives years of scales without dishing at the edges. The full sizing and firmness walkthrough, including how the pros set bench height, is in our piano bench cushion guide.

Fabric: Three Grades, One Flat Rate

Cotton Linen for the quiet practice room, Tech Fabric for the teaching studio where cups get set down, Premium Velvet for the parlor grand. Every grade prices at the same flat per-square-foot rate — you pay for the rectangle the pad covers, at the same rates as every other shape we cut, with no bench-specific premium.

Care is fabric-led. Brush off dust and loose grit with a soft brush; spot-clean spills soon after they happen with mild soap and a damp cloth, working from the edge of the stain inward; and let anything washed air-dry flat and fully before it goes back on the bench — foam that stays damp is what turns a pad musty. Midday sun through the practice-room window is the other thing to manage: rotate or cover the cushion when the bench sits in it for hours, because UV ages any fabric faster than playing does.

Pricing — From a $45 Make-Base

Every pad starts at a $45 make-base plus per-square-foot foam and fabric rates. A bench top is one of the smallest rectangles in the house, which is why a fully custom pad stays one of the most economical orders on this floor: the most common replacement — a standard 29 × 13 × 3″ artist-bench top in 50D — works out to about $117, and a 34 × 14″ duet top to about $135. The customizer prices your exact top, with a dimension drawing, before anything is cut.

On Sliding: The Polished-Top Question

Piano bench pad on a polished hardwood bench top, held in place by a loose gripper underlay between pad and wood

Finished bench tops are slick by design. Our pads ship as clean knife-edge rectangles — flat single-panel faces, square corners, no sewn ties, no grip backing — the profile that suits both modern and vintage benches. For a polished top, the retrofit that works is a loose gripper underlay between pad and wood: player weight pins the pad, the grip layer keeps it from creeping, and the bench finish is never touched. The full anti-slip walkthrough is in the guide.

How do I measure my piano bench for a cushion?

Remove the old pad and measure the wood top edge to edge — width by depth. Standard artist benches land at 29–30 by 13–14 inches; duet benches run 34–36 wide. Domed tops are measured to their flat footprint, with the dome noted. Every number is re-checked in the order flow before cutting.

What thickness and density for daily practice?

Two inches of 50D for most players — comfort without lifting the hand position. Three inches for high sitters or shared benches. If the bench adjusts, order thin and adjust the mechanism.

Will the cushion slide on a polished bench top?

Any flat pad can creep on finished wood. Our pads ship without sewn ties or grip backing — the clean profile — and the working retrofit is a loose gripper underlay, which holds without touching the finish.

How much does a custom piano bench cushion cost, and how long does it take?

From a $45 make-base plus per-square-foot foam and fabric — the exact total prices in the customizer from your measurements. Standard production runs 4–7 days, rush production 3–5 days, and flat-rate tracked shipping follows. Cut wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance — remade free.
