Description

Build Your Dining Chair Cushion

Dining seats are small, which makes precision matter more, not less — a quarter inch of error is a bigger fraction of a 16-inch seat than of a 24-inch sofa seat. And chairs at the heads of the table are often an inch wider than the side chairs, which is why "measure one and multiply" is the classic remake trigger.

We cut dining chair cushions to your numbers — width, depth, thickness, corner radius — in the 2.5–3 inch standard, one production run for the whole set so every chair gets the same loft and fabric lot. Loose seat cushions are the easiest measured replacement there is; fully upholstered seats are a re-upholstery job, not ours.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings run made-to-order cushions well above formula price once configured — and most only reveal that number after a quote request. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

Popular Dining Chair Sizes We Cut

Piece Typical size Notes
Square seat pads 16–19" squares Patio-duty stock sizes: 17 × 17, 18 × 18
Seat thickness 2.5–3" Match the original — the table was designed for it
Head chairs Often 1" wider than side chairs Measure every chair in the set, not one

How to Measure a Dining Chair Cushion

  • Width and depth of the old cushion, seam to seam, to the nearest quarter inch — measure the core if you can; otherwise measure the cover flat and say so on the order.
  • Thickness 2.5–3 inches: match the original — thinner bottoms out under adult weight, thicker lifts the sitter above the height the table was designed for.
  • Note the corners: radius corners get the radius measured; a 0 means square — say which. Front edges are sometimes rounded more than the back.

Fabric for a Room Where Things Get Spilled

Custom dining chair cushions construction close-up — foam core, fabric and stitching detail

Choose by what the household spills: Tech Fabric (waterproof, wipe-clean) for daily family dining, Cotton Linen for the natural weave in low-spill houses, Premium Velvet (no pilling, cat-claw resistant) for formal rooms. On foam, 35D is the honest dining standard because the hours are short; move to 50D when the table doubles as desk and craft station all day. The tier logic is the same as our custom order flow.

Outdoor Dining Chair Cushions, and Replacement Sets

  • Outdoor dining chair cushions are the same precision with weather duty added: patio dining decks run the same 17–20 inch squares, but the build wants weatherproof fabric over a vented foam core, and an exact fit on the deck. Start from the customizer with outdoor fabrics preselected — the measuring method on this page transfers unchanged. Fabric for full-sun decks: Sunbrella-grade solution-dyed acrylic — the fiber family sunbrella dining chair cushions, sunbrella seat cushions and sunbrella seat pads are built on — is in the outdoor menu at factory-direct per-square-foot rates.
  • Dining chair cushion replacement is the easiest measured job in the house when it goes right, and the classic remake when it goes wrong: measure every chair (heads run wider than sides), match the original 2.5–3 inch thickness, and order the set as one run so loft and dye lot match around the whole table. The full method is in the replacement guide. Whole-couch jobs scale the same way — couch cushion replacement runs the set as one order. Most of what we cut is for the dining room itself — cushions for dining room chairs, seat cushions for dining table chairs, indoor chair pads — and “indoor” changes the fabric menu, not the method: chair cushions indoor and outdoor run the same customizer with the usage filter flipped.
  • Shapes and builds follow the chair — chair cushions square and square seat cushions in the standard 16–19 inch range, round seat cushions for stools at any diameter, custom seat cushions and custom seat pads for odd decks, foam chair cushions in 35–50D, large chair cushions and high back chair cushions priced on their own area. Every variant is the same customizer with a different shape picked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order standard dining chair cushion sizes?

Yes — standard sizes too, in 3 clicks: most side chairs take 17–18 inch squares at 2.5–3 thick — stock squares like 17 × 17 and 18 × 18. Type the standard numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote — nothing is warehoused, so no size is ever out of stock.

Can you replace the cushions on dining chairs?

Yes — loose seat cushions are the easiest measured replacement there is: measure the old cushion to the nearest quarter inch, pick 2.5–3 inch thickness, and order. Fully upholstered seats are a re-upholstery job instead: unscrew, re-foam, recover, re-staple.

How thick should dining chair cushions be?

2.5–3 inches is the standard — thinner bottoms out under adult weight, thicker lifts the sitter above the table height the table was designed for, so match the original thickness.

What density foam do dining chairs need?

35D is the honest dining standard because the hours are short; move to 50D when the table doubles as desk and craft station all day. For the grade-by-grade breakdown, see how to choose foam density.

Should I replace all dining chair cushions or just the worn ones?

Replace in matched runs — one production run gives every chair the same loft and fabric lot. Either replace in visible pairs (head chairs first) or run the full set; new cushions beside old ones differ in height at the table.

How long does a custom dining chair set take?

Every cushion is cut and sewn after you order — production is 4–7 business days, and rush production is 3–5 business days for a surcharge. Production is separate from delivery (3–6 weeks door to door); typical US custom shops quote 3–6 weeks for the same build, and we ship direct from our own workshop.

Do you offer Sunbrella dining chair cushions?

For outdoor dining sets, yes — Sunbrella-grade solution-dyed acrylic, the fiber family sunbrella chair cushions and sunbrella seat pads are built on, is in our outdoor fabric menu at factory-direct per-square-foot rates. Indoor dining chairs rarely need it; the spill decision indoors is Tech Fabric, not sun tolerance.

Do you make high-back dining chair cushions?

Yes — high back chair cushions and highback seat pads cut to your frame’s height and width, at the loft you specify. Pillow chair cushions — the softer look on formal chairs — are the same build at a lower loft; measure height, width and thickness against the back frame.

Do you sell seat cushion covers on their own?

No — covers are sewn to their cores as complete cushions, so a cover-only product isn’t something we make. A cover that has worn through almost always sits on foam that has flattened too; a full replacement cut to your chair’s numbers is the honest fix.

Can you make large chair cushions for oversized seats?

Yes — big chair cushions and large seat pads simply price on their area; there is no size chart to fall off. Head-of-table chairs running an inch wider than the sides are the classic case: measure every chair and let each number drive its own pad.

Is a Dining Chair Cushion Right for You?

  • Match the original thickness, not your ambitions. The chair was designed around its seat height — a pad twice as thick raises the table relationship and arm clearance fails; the honest number is the old cushion’s thickness when new, measured at the crown.
  • 35D is the honest dining grade — until the table doubles as a desk. Short hours justify 35D; a table that hosts homework and laptops all day wants 50D, and paying the upgrade only where the hours actually are is the honest split.
  • Unsure about color? Email the factory before you order. Screens shift color, and dining light shifts it again — send a photo of where the cushion will live and we will tell you honestly how each fabric reads in that spot. The two-minute email is cheaper than a wrong-color guess.
  • Custom-cut means non-returnable. Custom-cut means non-returnable. A cushion cut to your numbers fits exactly one frame on earth — tolerances are published in writing (±½″, ±¾″ over 36″), and anything outside them against your confirmed numbers is remade free, whenever the error is found.

Made by the factory that ships them

  • Outdoor cushion factory for 10+ years — we cut, fill, and sew every order ourselves.
  • Every dimension you send is re-checked before a single yard of fabric is cut.
  • Made-to-order means any fabric, any piece, no minimum.
  • If we cut it wrong — outside the ±½″ tolerance (±¾″ over 36″), wrong fabric, wrong build — remade free.
