Build Your Wedge Cushion
A wedge cushion is a ramp: the same width and depth as any seat pad, but cut with a low front edge and a taller back edge, so the sitting surface tilts. That one geometric decision does three jobs — it lifts a seat that has sunk too low, it tips the pelvis gently into an upright sitting posture, and under a reading backrest it replaces pillows that flatten by Thursday. Off-the-shelf wedges come in two angles and one firmness; seats and bodies do not. This page is the other option: front height, back height, footprint and density all yours, cut after you order.
Open the Calculator — Price Your Footprint →
The calculator prices a wedge on its footprint rectangle at the tall edge’s thickness, because that is the block we cut from — the angle itself never adds a cent. Enter width and depth there, set thickness to the tall edge, then send us the front and back heights with the order or by email. Nothing is cut until a human reads your numbers and confirms them.
Heights run 2–8 inches per edge, footprints 8–120 by 6–72 inches — the same cut range as every cushion we make. Need an angled footprint instead of an angled profile (bay-window corner, fan-back chair)? That is our trapezoid wedge shape — different animal, same factory.
Pricing — estimated starting at
| The job | Footprint (W × D) | Tall edge | Estimated price* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chair seat wedge | 14 × 14 | 3″ | $82 |
| Glider seat lift | 18 × 18 | 5″ | $114 |
| Reading ramp | 24 × 20 | 6″ | $152 |

*All three at 50D foam: $45 make-base + footprint square feet × the per-square-foot rate (foam at the tall edge’s tier + $7.43 fabric, all 59 fabrics one price). The same 18 × 18 glider wedge runs $112 in 35D, $114 in 50D, $117 in 60D, $121 in 65D — at seat-wedge sizes the density choice is about feel, not budget. The low front edge and the angle cost nothing extra.
The Angle Is Yours: Front Height, Back Height
You do not pick an angle from a chart — you pick two heights, and the angle falls out of the arithmetic. Rise is the difference between the back and front edges; the tilt is the rise over the depth:
- 1″ rise over a 16″ seat — about 3.6°. The nudge: a touch of upright tilt without changing how the chair feels.
- 2″ over 16″ — about 7.1°. The classic posture wedge: real tilt, still easy to slide off the front of.
- 3″ over 16″ — about 10.6°. Lean-back territory — reading corners and deep floor nests.
For a pure seat-height lift with no tilt, the honest answer is not a wedge at all but a plain custom seat cushion at the new height — we will tell you that before we cut it, not after.

Density: 35D to 65D HR Foam
A wedge is a working cushion — it carries your full weight on a sloped face, so the foam grade matters more here than on a decorative pad:
| Density | Choose it when | Feel over time |
|---|---|---|
| 50D | The default. Daily dining and desk chairs, gliders, window seats. | Supportive with give; holds its ramp for years of daily use. |
| 60D | Heavier sitters, or wedges that live under daily reading weight. | Firmer, slower to take a set; the quiet upgrade. |
| 65D | Maximum structure — tall ramps and deep reading wedges. | The firmest cut; keeps its geometry even at the tall edge. |
What density actually is, and how to match it to body weight and hours of use, is unpacked in how to choose foam density.
Fabrics — 59 at One Price
Every wedge is sewn with a tailored cover: top and bottom faces cut to the ramp, continuous side band, zipper along the bottom back edge so the cover comes off for washing. All 59 fabrics sit at one price — five families from breathable linens and leather-like tech fabric through pet velvet, velvet and chenille. What we do not offer is equally plain: no ties, no non-slip backing, no piping, no tufting — a clean cut cover, because every extra that can fail on a wedge that gets climbed on daily was vetoed by the people who would have to remake it.
How to Measure for a Wedge Cushion

- Width and depth, edge to edge of the seat the wedge will sit on, tape square to the edges, nearest quarter inch. This is the same discipline as any cushion — the full walkthrough is in how to measure a rectangle cushion.
- Front height and back height: how thick you want each edge, 2–8 inches. If you are correcting a seat that sits too low, measure seat-to-knee comfort sitting on folded blankets first — it is the cheapest prototype there is.
- Photograph the seat from directly above with the tape laid along each edge. One photo answers the follow-up questions before we have to ask them; more walkthroughs live in our measuring guides.
Where Wedges Earn Their Keep
The low glider. Nursery gliders and porch rockers are built low, and after a year of nursing and rocking many sit an inch or two below comfortable — getting out becomes a two-hand event. A wedge at the seat footprint with the back edge as the tall one adds height and a touch of tilt that helps the stand-up. We cut these to fit under or instead of the original pad — the glider-specific logic (deck sizes, back slots, ottoman matches) is on our glider cushions page.
The reading corner. A tall ramp against a wall or a daybed turns a stack of flattening pillows into one geometric piece that never needs fluffing — pair it with a knee bolster and the floor becomes furniture.
The too-hard, too-flat chair. Dining and desk chairs with dead or board-flat seats get new life from a shallow wedge: 2–3 inches at the back edge, and both the height and the posture change at once.
One honest boundary: this is seating comfort, not medicine. We make no therapeutic claims for any cushion — if tailbone or back pain is the reason you are shopping, the right next step is a clinician, then a wedge cut to whatever they specify.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right wedge angle?
Pick two heights instead of an angle. The rise (back edge minus front edge) over the seat depth gives the tilt: 1″ over a 16″ seat is about 3.6 degrees, 2″ is about 7.1, 3″ is about 10.6. If you only need height without tilt, a flat cushion at the new height is the better tool — and we will say so before cutting.
What is the difference between this and your Wedge/Tapered shape?
The designer’s Wedge/Tapered shape is a trapezoid seen from above — a flat cushion whose front edge is wider than its back, for bay-window corners and fan-back chairs. This product is the ramp seen from the side: low front edge, tall back edge. Same factory, different geometry; the measuring rules for the trapezoid version are in the trapezoid measurement guide.
Can you cut a wedge for a glider or rocking chair?
Yes — footprint to the deck, front and back heights to your call, density to match the use. Gliders have quirks (narrow decks, back cushions that share the frame), so start from the glider cushions page and we will fit the wedge into the set.
Will the wedge stay put on a slippery seat?
Nothing we promise and nothing we bolt on: no ties, no non-slip coating, no hook-and-loop — a tailored cover with square corners and flat seams, and the honest advice that a trimmed rug-grip layer underneath is the classic fix for polished wood or waxy rattan.
Is a wedge cushion good for tailbone or back pain?
We make no medical claims and this is not a medical device. Wedges are sold here as seating geometry — height, tilt, support. If pain is driving the purchase, ask a clinician what geometry they recommend, then send us those numbers; we will cut exactly that and nothing more.
How long does a custom wedge take, and what does shipping cost?
Cut and sewn only after you order: standard production runs 4–7 days, the rush lane 3–5, and shipping from the factory door takes 3–6 weeks. Shipping is free on orders over $158 — every wedge on this page clears that bar — and a flat $29 below it.
Made by the factory that ships them
There is no brand office between you and this wedge. Your two heights go into the queue, the block is cut to a quarter-inch tolerance and re-checked against your order before the knife drops, and the cover is sewn in the same building the box is sealed in. If we ever cut it wrong, we remake it free — that policy costs everyone less than hoping you do not notice. It is also why a custom wedge costs what it costs: you are paying for a factory’s Tuesday, not a warehouse’s clearance shelf.
