Build Your Chair Cushion

Chair cushion is the biggest, bluntest phrase in this business — and a fair one, because every chair wants the same two things: a pad that fits its deck and a fit that survives its habit. But the chairs themselves refuse to agree on anything. A dining chair is a 17-inch square; a rocking chair is a seat-plus-back set in constant motion; an Adirondack is a fan-back that no rectangle has ever fit; a wicker chair is a trapezoid that narrows toward the back. Universal pads fail every one of them in a different way.

This page is the hub for the whole chair family, indoors and out. Each chair type with real build logic has its own page — the collections below branch to them — and every build is the same factory answer: measure the deck and the back, pick the fabric tier, and we cut, fill and sew to your numbers.

Build your chair cushion — start with the shape below.

Squares for dining decks, rectangles with backs for rockers and gliders, notched T-cushions for upholstered frames — pick the closest shape, enter your measurements, and see an instant estimate with a dimension drawing.

Dining, rocking, patio, wicker — every chair is the same job: pick a shape and type your numbers.

Pricing — estimated starting at

*One chair seat pad (18 × 18 × 3 in.): $39 make-base + 2.25 sq ft × rate ($15.32/$16.43/$17.56 per sq ft, 3" 50D foam + fabric). Seat-plus-back sets and shaped decks price on their own area at the same formula — every chair, one calculator.

For comparison: big-box universal chair pads run $10–$30 each in a handful of sizes, fiber-filled, and are typically replaced annually. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

How to Measure a Chair Cushion

Measuring for custom chair cushions — dimensions taken edge to edge for an exact factory cut
  • Measure the deck, not the old pad — width and depth edge to edge to the nearest quarter inch; on wicker and tapered decks, record front and back widths separately.
  • Back cushions are their own measurement: height from the seat line, width at the widest point, taken flat against the back frame.
  • Match the fit to the chair’s habit — motion chairs (rockers, gliders, swings) want a snug cut, smooth decks want an exact one.
  • Full sets: measure one of each chair type, then count — matched sets leave the factory with the same loft and the same dye lot.

One Chair Family, Two Fabric Worlds

The chair family spans the whole house and the whole yard, and the fabric tier follows the chair’s address. Indoor dining and desk chairs run cotton linen, velvet and knit grades; patio, wicker and lawn chairs want a weatherproof woven over a core that drains. Same 11 shapes, same calculator — two fabric pools, compared honestly in our fabric guide.

Frequently asked questions

Standard sizes too — in 3 clicks: chair seats cluster at 16–20 inch squares at 2–3 inches thick — stock squares like 18 × 18 and 20 × 20. Type the numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote — nothing is warehoused, so no size is ever out of stock.
The words overlap. In our shop’s usage a chair cushion means the chair’s full build — usually seat plus back, matched to the chair type (rocking, Adirondack, wicker) — while a seat cushion is the pad alone. Chair work is where shape starts to matter: fan backs, trapezoid decks, the motion build.
Yes — rockers take seat-plus-back sets built for constant motion, the build laid out on the rocking chair page.
That is the daily work: trapezoid wicker decks, fan-back Adirondacks, curved wrought-iron backs, notched T-cushion frames. Pick the closest of the 11 shapes and send the measurements; dimensions are confirmed before cutting.
We don’t sew on ties or gripper undersides — our factory can’t supply them reliably, so we won’t sell you the promise. A pad cut to your confirmed numbers sits the deck without wandering, and for chairs that get dragged around, a thin non-slip rug pad trimmed slightly smaller than the cushion, laid flat underneath, is the honest fix.
Yes — dining chairs, a rocker and a patio set can travel on one order, each piece priced on its own area; pieces sharing a fabric tier ship from one dye lot.
