Custom papasan cushions, cut to your diameter
A papasan chair is one diameter of wicker bowl and one big round cushion — and when that round dies, the size chart for it is famously vague. This page is the opposite of vague: you give us one diameter through the center, one thickness, one fabric, and the round is cut to those exact numbers. Rounds from 8 to 96 inches across, 2 to 8 inches thick, in high-density foam grades that hold their loft for years instead of flattening into the pancake every fiber-filled original becomes.

Two honest things before you scroll further. First: what custom shops sell for papasans — including the names currently ranking page one — is a flat round disc, not the shallow concave bowl an original cushion shipped as. We cut flat rounds in the configurator; a true pre-dished replica is an inquiry job, and we say so plainly rather than pretending a dropdown can produce one. Second: every fabric in the pool prices the same, so choosing Sunbrella-class solution-dyed acrylic over basic linen never moves the number. Design your round cushion or read on for diameters, pricing and the measuring routine.
What you are ordering here — and the honest boundary
An original papasan cushion is not flat. It is a shallow cone that dishes to cradle the sitter — part sewn geometry, part fiber loft that settled under years of sitting. The replacement industry, us included, overwhelmingly sells a flat disc: diameter, thickness, fabric. That is not a dodge; it is what the furniture needs. A flat round sits in the bowl, the rim keeps it centered, and your weight creates the dish in use. The concavity you remember came largely from fiber settling, not from the pad shipping pre-shaped.
The boundary, stated plainly: we do not offer a pre-shaped concave bowl as a one-click product. No shop honestly should — the geometry does not survive that translation. If what you want is the true dished original, send the frame diameter, the depth of the dish at center and a photo; the mill replies within one business day and tells you straight whether it is a job we can cut or one to route elsewhere. The full engineering discussion of flat-versus-concave lives in our outdoor papasan guide.
Why choose Cushion Mill custom papasan cushions?
Diameter-fit, not one-size
Papasan frames are not standardized — 44, 46 and 48 inch bowls are all common, and double papasans (mamasans) run larger. A stock round is a compromise sewn for the middle of that range. Ours is cut to your tape: overhang rounds that drape the rim, or inset rounds sized to the usable seating circle inside the bowl, both to the nearest quarter inch.
Foam structure, not blown fiber
Original and cheap replacement rounds are blown fiber — huge, soft, and structurally doomed. Fiber has no recovery of its own: it mats, holds moisture, and compresses for good. A cut foam core carries its own structure. It drains, dries and holds its loft on a clock set by density — 50D for occasional nests, 60D for the everyday chair, both cut to order here.
Indoor rounds, outdoor rounds
Where the chair lives decides the fabric, and both lanes are one flat rate. Indoors: linen, velvet, chenille and pet-friendly weaves. Outdoors: solution-dyed acrylics that hold color for years of full sun, over a foam core that sheds rain instead of drinking it. Same configurator, same pricing formula, different fabric pool.
From order to doorstep, one accountable workshop
Nothing is cut until a real person confirms your numbers against the order — odd diameters get a phone call, not a guess. Tolerance is a quarter inch, and if the fit is wrong the remake is free. Standard production runs 4–7 business days, rush 3–5, with shipping in 3–6 weeks and free shipping over USD 158.
Popular papasan frame and cushion diameters
The industry rule custom shops quote is simple: frame diameter plus about two inches, so the pad drapes the bowl rim. Frames of 44 to 48 inches are the common range, which puts overhang cushions at 46 to 50 inches; oversized mamasan bowls take rounds up to 54 inches. The alternative nobody mentions is the inset round — a smaller disc cut to the seating circle inside the bowl, roughly 22 to 26 inches on a 46-inch frame, leaving the wicker rim exposed as backrest.
| Frame diameter | Overhang round (+2″) | Inset seating circle | Typical thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| 44″ bowl | 46″ disc | 22–24″ disc | 4–5″ |
| 46″ bowl | 48″ disc | 22–26″ disc | 4–5″ |
| 48″ bowl | 50″ disc | 24–26″ disc | 4–6″ |
| 52″+ mamasan bowl | 54″ disc | measure the usable circle | 5–6″ |
These are the sizes the trade quotes, not a law. Rounds are cut to any diameter from 8 to 96 inches, and your own tape outranks every chart on this page — one pass across the widest point, through the center, nearest quarter inch is all the measuring there is.

Overhang or inset: the decision that sets the price
Rounds are priced on the bounding square of the diameter, so diameter is the whole ballgame: a 50-inch overhang disc and a 25-inch inset disc differ by four times the fabric and foam area at the same thickness. Overhang is the nest look — soft edges hanging past the wicker, the classic papasan photograph. Inset costs a quarter as much, sheds water instead of wicking it over the rim, flips and rotates easily to even out sun wear, and reads as a deliberate look: bowl as shell, disc as seat.
Rule of thumb from the cutting table: overhang if the papasan is a lounging nest you curl into; inset if it is a chair you sit in upright. Real numbers at our published rates — one $45 make-base plus area at the foam rate for your grade, fabric at a flat $7.43 per square foot:
| Round disc | Area | 50D, sewn cover | 60D, sewn cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| 46″ × 46″ × 4″ overhang | 14.7 sq ft | $478 | $488 |
| 50″ × 50″ × 4″ overhang | 17.4 sq ft | $557 | $569 |
| 54″ × 54″ × 4″ mamasan | 20.3 sq ft | $642 | $656 |
| 24″ × 24″ × 4″ inset | 4.0 sq ft | $163 | $166 |
| 26″ × 26″ × 5″ inset | 4.7 sq ft | $190 | $195 |

For calibration: a major brand’s official papasan replacement round lists at $259 in fiber fill — the inset foam route above beats it on structure, and the overhang route is simply a much bigger object. Every density upgrade on a big round costs tens, not hundreds: roughly $10 across the table at these sizes.
Thickness, fabric and the outdoor spec
Thickness on a papasan round is comfort geometry, not status. Four to five inches at 60D carries the sink-in feel the chair is famous for; beyond that you are buying diameter-priced foam to do a density’s job, though the configurator takes 2 to 8 inches if a deep bowl demands it. For a round that lives outdoors, spec in this order: solution-dyed acrylic fabric first, a zippered cover second — the zipper lets you wash the cover, and flush-stitched seams keep water from pooling — thickness third, and the habit of standing the round on edge after hard rain last. Covers zip off for washing; between washes, spot-clean in place — seams are stitched flush so water does not pool on the line.

Five easy ordering steps
1. Measure once. One pass across the bowl at the widest point, through the center, nearest quarter inch — that is the overhang diameter. For an inset round, measure the flat seating circle instead. 2. Pick your route. Flat rounds go straight into the round configurator; concave originals and odd bowls go to the inquiry route with a photo. 3. Confirm. A real person checks the numbers against the order before anything is cut. 4. Build. The core is cut, the cover zippered, in 4–7 business days standard or 3–5 rush. 5. Receive. Shipping in 3–6 weeks, free over USD 158 — and if the fit misses, the remake is on us.
Frequently asked questions
Papasan cushion vs papasan chair pad — what is the difference?
In this trade the words get used loosely, but the working distinction is thickness. A cushion is the big structural round — 4 to 6 inches of fill that makes the chair a chair. A chair pad is the thin layer — 1 to 2 inches — meant to soften an already-supported seat. Most papasans need the cushion; a pad on a bare bowl just moves the wicker marks from your back to your legs. If your old one measured under 2 inches and the chair still sat well, order the same; if the bowl has been eating thin rounds, order the thickness this page recommends.
What size cushion does my papasan chair need?
Measure the bowl frame across the widest point. The industry rule is frame diameter plus two inches for the classic overhang look — a 44-inch frame takes a 46-inch round, a 48-inch frame takes a 50. The money-saving alternative is an inset round sized to the 22–26 inch seating circle inside the bowl, about a quarter of the area at equal thickness. Either way your own tape outranks any chart, and the configurator takes diameters from 8 to 96 inches.
Is a flat round really a replacement for the dished original?
Yes — with the boundary stated honestly. The dished feel of an original comes largely from fiber settling under years of sitting, not from the pad shipping pre-shaped. A flat round sits in the bowl, the rim holds it centered, and your weight creates the dish in use. What we do not do is promise a pre-shaped concave replica from a diameter dropdown; that construction is a specialist inquiry job, and we will tell you straight whether it is ours to cut.
What thickness should a papasan cushion be?
Four to five inches at 60D foam carries the classic sink-in feel; six is the deep-nest maximum worth buying. Below three inches the wicker reads through the pad. Thickness runs 2 to 8 inches if your bowl demands it, and beyond five you are mostly paying diameter-priced foam to do a density’s job — better to step up the grade than the inches.
Can a custom papasan cushion live outdoors?
Under cover or in part shade, yes — spec a solution-dyed acrylic cover over a high-density core, and stand the round on edge after hard rain so it dries vertically. Fully exposed bowls eat even good cushions; a big round is a sail with seams, so the honest habit is bringing it in when the chair sits empty for weeks. The full outdoor failure analysis is in our outdoor papasan guide.
How much does a custom papasan cushion cost?
By published formula: a $45 make-base plus area at your foam grade’s rate plus fabric at $7.43 per square foot, with rounds priced on the bounding square of the diameter. Real numbers: a 46″ overhang round at 4″ thick runs $478 in 50D; the 24″ inset alternative $163; a 54″ mamasan round $642. Every fabric prices the same, and free shipping kicks in over USD 158.
Does the cushion come with ties to hold it in place?
No — we do not sew ties, and a big round rarely needs them. An overhang disc is effectively captive: the bowl rim holds it. An inset disc stays put on weight alone — a 24-inch, 5-inch, 60D round is a double-digit-pound object sitting in a dish. In real wind, the physics answer beats the sewing answer: bring the round in.
How long does a custom papasan cushion take?
Standard production 4–7 business days, rush 3–5, then shipping in 3–6 weeks. Nothing is cut until your numbers are confirmed, which protects the schedule as much as the fit.
