Description
Family patio after snack time — one chair clearly in the splash radius, the rest of the set untouched

Parents of a one-year-old do not need the pattern explained to them: breakfast happens at the table for exactly as long as the high chair holds its charm, and then, without ceremony, the banana moves outdoors. A toddler eating in a patio chair does not miss. Sweet potato lands where physics puts it, and physics puts it on the seat beside the chair, on the seat of the chair, and occasionally on a cushion two chairs away for reasons science has not examined. The Tacana set does not stop being the family’s favorite spot — it just starts absorbing meals.

Map the damage before you order anything

Here is what every parent notices by the second summer and almost nobody acts on: the wear is not distributed. Baby-led weaning destroys one chair. Not the set — one chair, the one nearest the door, the one where the toddler is plunked with a pouch while the parent finishes coffee standing up. Its seat top carries a museum of dried fruit. The back-rest has a permanent yogurt horizon line. Three cushions over, the “guest” chair still looks nearly new, because guests are theoretical and the toddler is daily.

Once you see the patio as a map — feeding chair, climbing chair, the forgotten far bench — the ordering logic reorganizes itself. The high-traffic pieces want equipment: a wipe-clean performance weave, maybe a mid-tone pattern, density that takes a bouncing fourteen-pound passenger. The low-traffic pieces are free to be beautiful — the linen blend, the pale solid, the fabric you actually wanted before children. Because every cushion in an order is cut to its own three measurements, the same set can carry different cloth on different chairs without any fuss. The splash zone gets armor; the rest of the patio gets to stay a patio.

The ten-minute rule, and what fabric honors it

Stain chemistry on outdoor cloth is mostly a schedule problem. Fruit purees, milk, and diluted juice are all removable — if the cover reaches water while the deposit is still moist. Dried banana, having bonded with sun-warmed polyester for an afternoon, becomes part of the textile’s biography. So the household rule that saves cushions is modest: within ten minutes of the meal ending, the affected cover is off the foam and into the sink or the washer. No scrubbing marathon — just timely water.

That rule only works on covers designed for removal, which is the whole reason this workshop builds them the way it does: every cover unzips fully from the foam, entirely, no partial openings, no sewn-shut tier. A ten-minute response needs a zipper that runs the length of the seam and a cover that separates from its filling in one motion. Zip, peel, wash, dry, back on — and because the foam never enters the machine, the seat returns at full height rather than the washed-and-wilted look of foam that has been through a spin cycle it never agreed to.

Between full washes, the day-to-day is a damp cloth and patience: performance weaves let most pouches and purees bead long enough to wipe, and a patterned mid-tone renders invisible whatever the cloth missed. The pale solids can wait for a less hands-on decade of family life.

Soft landings and honest edges

Parents ask about two safety-adjacent things, and the answers are practical rather than dramatic. Foam firmness: a mid-density seat — the 50D to 60D neighborhood inside the 35D to 65D menu — gives a small child something stable to climb onto and off of, while the 40s feel luxurious for three weeks and then sink into a crater. And cushion edges: cut-to-measure pads are built with plain knife-edge seams and square corners, no piping or trim to bite a descent — nothing on the surface for a toddler to pick at, and nothing that turns a tumble into a harder landing than the foam already is. The honest limit stays honest, though: cushions are seating, not playground equipment, and the frames deserve the supervision any climbing toddler gets anywhere.

Putting a name to the frames

Tacana sits among the Hampton Bay lines that never received an official cushion chart — the name comes down via retail listings and owner reports, dimensions unpublished. Parents identify theirs fast, generally mid-nap: flip a chair, photograph the white tag under the seat frame where the model number sits beside a GLD or THD prefix; dig out the Home Depot order confirmation or the assembly leaflet from the box the set came in; and if both have gone the way of the pacifier, send photos of the frames to the bench and we will narrow it by construction era. Whatever the tag says, the numbers that matter are the three per cushion — width, depth, thickness at the seam, per the measuring guides — since same-name sets from different years can differ in loft.

Where this comes from: Tacana facts here reflect retail listings and owner accounts — Hampton Bay issued no specification sheet. Your frame tag and your order records are the deciding evidence.
Unaffiliated workshop: CushionMill is independent of Hampton Bay and Home Depot. Series names identify frames; every cushion is cut to your measurements, not sold as an official part.

Armor for some, beauty for the rest

The mixed-strategy set costs nothing extra: pricing opens at a $45 make-base per cushion and moves only with finished size and density across the 35D to 65D range, while all 119 fabrics — wipe-clean performance weaves and delicate-looking naturals alike — sit at the same figure for a given size. That flat menu is what makes the splash-zone strategy free: the feeding chair’s workhorse cloth and the far bench’s linen-look weave bill identically, so pragmatism never has to win an argument with taste. And when the toddler era ends, only the armored pieces need re-covering — a single-chair refresh, not a set-wide sentence.

Wipe-clean and patterned swatches from the 119-fabric menu — splash-zone armor at the same flat price as any weave

Frequently asked questions

Can I order just the one chair that takes all the abuse?

Yes — and it is the smart opening move. Single cushions from the $45 make-base carry no minimum, so the feeding chair can be rebuilt in wipe-clean cloth now while the rest of the set waits. Match the height of the survivors so the seats stay level; the visual difference of a bolder cloth on one chair reads as intentional.

How soon do I need to wash food off the covers?

While it is still moist — the ten-minute habit is the whole discipline. Fruit and milk rinsing out clean versus staining permanently is almost entirely a timing question, and covers that unzip fully off the foam make the timing easy: one zipper, one wash cycle, foam never touched.

What fabric hides toddler damage best?

Mid-tone multicolor patterns over any solid. The pattern’s own variation absorbs drip marks that would headline on cream canvas, and solution-dyed weaves let most pouches wipe away with a damp cloth before they ever reach the washer.

What foam suits a child who climbs onto everything?

The middle of the range — seats around 50D to 60D within the 35D to 65D menu — firm enough to give a climber a stable platform and durable enough to survive the enthusiasm. Soft low-density foam both sinks faster under repeated use and gives less-secure footing.

Are the cushions safe for kids to be around?

The construction is plain and pick-resistant: knife-edge seams, square corners, no piping or decorative trim, and full-length zippers that close flush. Standard parental supervision still applies to climbing — cushions are for sitting on, and the frames did not become softer.

When the set is needed before a birthday party?

Count backward: 4 to 7 business days of standard sewing or 3 to 5 rushed, plus 3 to 6 weeks of freight to most addresses. A first-birthday-in-the-yard order wants to be placed at party-planning time, not invitation time — the rush option shortens the sewing room’s part, not the road’s.

What ordering from this bench gets you

  • One workshop for the entire build — cutting, filling, sewing under one roof for over a decade, quoted and made by the same hands.
  • Each figure set checked against the declared piece count before cloth is cut; anything that looks off draws a question, not an assumption.
  • No minimums and no seasons — the one splash-zone chair today, its neighbors whenever their era arrives, any of 119 cloths at one flat price list.
  • Remake terms in plain language: any cut beyond ±½″ (±¾″ once past 36″), or a wrong fabric or build, remade without charge.

Tacana replacement cushions rebuilt around the map of your family’s actual mess — armor where the banana lands, linen where it doesn’t.
