A window seat is the best seat in the house — until the cushion gives out. Built-in benches, reading nooks, and storage seats never follow standard sizes: some run wall to wall, some notch around trim, some turn a corner. The big-box “72 x 16” pad was never going to fit, and now it’s flattened from years of Saturday-morning reading anyway.
Give us three numbers — width, depth, thickness — and we’ll cut a cushion that fits your seat like it grew there. Add rounded corners, a welt edge, or ties to match your trim. For sun-soaked sills we recommend solution-dyed acrylic so the color outlasts the view; for covered nooks, soft indoor fabrics in the same exact cut. How to Measure a Window Seat Cushion
- Measure the cushion, not the frame — if you have the old pad, lay it flat on a table and go edge to edge.
- Wall-to-wall runs: measure the clear opening and deduct 1/4″ for a snug drop-in fit.
- Trimming around baseboard or radiator pipes? That’s a notched cushion — pick Notch in the customizer and send the cutout dimensions.
- 3″ is the window-seat sweet spot: supportive to sit on, slim enough to keep the view.

Fabric for Seats That Live Behind Glass
Most window seats are indoor fabrics first — soft weaves and textures that feel right against morning coffee. But glass magnifies sun, and a south-facing sill fades ordinary fabric in a single season; for those seats we specify solution-dyed acrylic (the Sunbrella indoor line) that holds color for years. - The classic sill seat — 36–48 inches of bench under a single window, built by the cabinet installer or the homeowner. The pad wants 2–3 inches (the view stays open), a welt edge if the trim is formal, and an anti-slip underside against the lacquered deck. This is the easy case: three numbers, one piece.
- The wall-to-wall reading nook — 60–96 inches of daylight and pillows. Order snug (clear opening minus a quarter inch) so the pad drops in like a fitted sheet, at 4–5 inches of foam for hours of sitting. Past 72 inches the run splits into two pieces at a planned seam — flippable, and the seam lands where the cushion meets the wall, not where you sit.
- The storage seat with a hinged lid — the window seat that doubles as a toy chest. Split at the hinge line, not the midpoint, with the lid lip accounted for so the front edge never binds; see indoor bench cushions for the same build at bench scale.
- The angled or bay run — when the wall turns, the geometry does too. Bay windows take front pads plus corner wedges (their own page); angled walls take a wedge cut; all three pieces order as one fabric run so the dye lots agree around the corner.
