How to Measure a Dog Bed Cushion
- Measure the cover’s interior, not the old fill — seam to seam with the closure open — and note the gusset (the boxed side wall) that sets the insert’s thickness.
- Deduct a nominal quarter inch per side so the insert sits in the cover without fighting it — thinner swims, thicker strains the closure.
- For new beds without a cover, give the dog the curl-room test: bed length at least the dog’s nose-to-tail-base length, plus the thickness from the breed table above.
- For crates, measure the crate’s inside walls and pan height — the crate section below — not the size on the box.

Crate Cushions
The wire crate should make this easy and doesn’t. Crate makers size by dog weight, not by inside dimensions, and no two lines agree: the “36-inch” crates from different makers vary in inside length and in door geometry, and the raised pan lip eats height that a thick pad steals twice. The pad that fits one 36-inch crate gaps or jams in another — which is why crate pads are a measuring job, not a size-chart job.
- Measure the inside walls — length and width floor to floor, past the pan lip — and the door’s swing height; thickness has to clear both.
- 2–3 inches is the crate budget — enough loft for joints, thin enough that the door latches and the pan still slides out for cleaning.
- The plastic pan slides — the pad shouldn’t. An anti-slip underside keeps the pad from bunching into a corner every time the dog circles; it is the single most useful crate-pad option.
- Crate-trained puppies get the cheap fill — the honest lifecycle note: puppies chew, and a replaceable insert beats an expensive bed during the phase.
Replacement Inserts for the Cover You Keep
The quality pet-bed market converged on a structure that makes insert replacement obvious: a durable outer cover, a hook-and-loop or snap opening, and a foam slab inside. A 12-pound cat’s claws do more surface damage than a 70-pound dog’s paws, which is why the cat-proof tiers are the dense weaves: chenille, canvas, and the tightest knits. Window perches and cat beds run 15–24 inches in the same shapes and the same calculator; rabbit and other small-pet pads run smaller still, in the wipe-clean tiers. The one honest species difference: cats knead as well as dig, so seam style matters — boxed seams with the stitching carried inside the seam allowance last longest under claws.

Match the crate’s door and pan: most wire crates take 2–3 inches without blocking the door swing or the pan slide. The crate’s own interior-height budget, not comfort, is the limit — measure the opening before ordering thickness.
Is chew-proof dog bed foam real?
No foam is chew-proof — the honest answer. Maximum-density grades resist tearing better than soft foams, tough covers last longest, and puppies get cheap fills until the chewing phase passes.
