Custom Back Cushions, Made to Your Measurements

Factory-direct, cut to your measurements — sofa backs, chair backs, any height, any loft.

Back cushions die differently from seats: seats compress under weight, but backs shed their fill — fiber blows to the bottom corners, foam cores slump behind fabric that still looks fine, and one season the back is a fabric shell with a lumbar gap where the support was. The seat gets blamed first because that is where you notice, but the hollow back is the piece that makes a whole set feel finished or finished-off.

We cut back cushions to your measurements — sofa backs and loveseat backs, dining and wing chairs, bench backs and outdoor deep-seating backs — in fiber, foam core, or the wrapped build, with loft matched to the frame instead of the catalog average. Order backs alone to revive a set whose seats still rebound, or as seat and back cushions in one production run so every piece shares the same fabric lot.

Build Your Back Cushion

Build your back cushion — start with the shape below.

Enter the back’s width, height, and loft (thickness at top and bottom — wedge backs get both numbers), then pick your fabric tier and add the seats in the same run.

Fabric tierEstimated price*
Cotton Linen$90

Premium Velvet$97

*One sofa-scale back (22 × 20 × 4 in.): $39 make-base + 3.1 sq ft × rate ($16.58/$17.69/$18.82 per sq ft, 4" 50D foam + fabric). Chair-scale and bench-scale backs cost less; fiber-fill builds and wedge cuts price on their own area. Every dimension is confirmed before we cut.

For comparison: U.S. custom-configurator specialists’ 2026 listings price back pieces only as part of quote-only full sets — backs alone rarely get a number at all. We publish the formula above so you can check the math before you order.

How to Measure a Back Cushion

  • Measure the slot, not the shell: width between the arms or frame rails where the back sits, height from the seat deck to the top edge, to the nearest quarter inch — a back ordered to the flattened old pad’s numbers comes out shorter than the frame it must fill.
  • Loft at the top and the bottom separately — wedge backs are thicker at the bottom by design, and a rectangle cut on a wedge frame gaps at the shoulders.
  • Note the fastening before ordering: backs fasten with ties to slat gaps, hook-and-loop to the frame, or nothing at all where the frame wedges them in place — the three change where the seams land.
  • Ordering backs for an outdoor set? Outdoor chair back cushions follow the same measuring method with weatherproof fabric and vented builds — start from outdoor cushions.

Fill Decides the Years, Fabric Decides the Room

The fill is the whole lifespan decision on a back: fiber-only backs are the catalog default and the first thing to hollow out; a 45–50D foam core or a wrapped build holds its shape for years of leaning — the fill comparison is unpacked in our filling types guide. Fabric follows the room: cotton linen breathes, premium velvet takes formal rooms and stands up to claws, tech fabric wipes clean where pets and spills rule. Whatever you choose, order backs and seats in one run — a matched set needs one dye lot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order standard back cushion sizes?

Standard sizes too — in 3 clicks: sofa backs run the same width as their seat blocks at 18–22 inches high, chair backs cluster at 16–20 squares — type the standard numbers into the customizer for the same instant factory-direct quote. Nothing is warehoused, so a standard back is never out of stock.

How do I measure for a replacement back cushion?

Measure the slot the back lives in: width between arms or rails, height from seat deck to top edge, and loft at top and bottom — to the nearest quarter inch, off the frame rather than the flattened old pad. Full method: our three-step measuring guide.

Can I replace just the back cushions and keep the seats?

Yes — when the seats still rebound, backs alone revive the set. Two cautions: new backs sit slightly proud against old seats (full loft vs settled fill), and fabric ordered later will not match the original dye lot — which is why many customers end up ordering seat and back cushions together as one run.

What fill should back cushions use?

Fiber for the soft upholstered look and regular refluffing; a 45–50D foam core for backs that must hold a lumbar shape with zero maintenance; the wrapped build (foam core in a fiber jacket) for the middle. Fiber is why catalog backs hollow out first — the fill migrates every time someone leans back.

Do you make outdoor back cushions too?

Yes — outdoor chair back cushions and deep-seating backs are daily work: weatherproof fabrics over vented foam-core builds, with attachment that survives open frames and wind. The outdoor fabric logic is in the fabric guide, and outdoor cushions is the hub for that side.
